Paint.NET is free editing software. It's the software I use to skin, so I decided to lend my help. Today I will teach you the basics of recoloring with the program.

To use this tutorial properly you must have Paint.NET v2.62 or higher. To get it click here (http://www.getpaint.net/index.html).

Start by opening Body Shop. Select " Start new project."
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8141/tut16yl.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut16yl.jpg)

Select the item of clothing you want to recolor. I am recoloring this one.
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/6564/tut23zw.th.jpg (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut23zw.jpg)
Once you choose which one, click the "Export Selected Textures" button.

Next choose a name for your project. It's recommended that you choose a name that you can remember easily, so you can find it later on.
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/2009/tut34rw.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut34rw.jpg)
When you are done naming it click the Check mark to export the texture.

When it's done exporting, this screen will come up. The red box indicates where the new file is located.
http://img459.imageshack.us/img459/161/tut42ce.th.jpg (http://img459.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut42ce.jpg)
When you are done looking at it, click the "X".

The next step is to open the texture up in Paint.NET. Locate the folder that was indicated in the last step, and open up the texture.
Now we can start recoloring!

This part is simple: Go to LAYERS>ADJUSTMENTS>HUE/SATURATION.
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/9504/tut54rs.th.jpg (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut54rs.jpg)

Move the sliders around till you get the color that you want your clothing to be. I chose pink for the dress because I like Pink :)
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/2346/tut65qw.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut65qw.jpg)
When you get it just the way you want it click OK and save. Now go back to Body Shop and review your changes. This is what mine turned out like:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1504/tut79lp.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut79lp.jpg)

If you are satisfied with the way it tuned out you can import it now. I'm not satisfied with it though, because I don't like that blue scarf. So now I am going to give you a quick overview of Selective recoloring.

There are four selection tools in Paint.NET: Rectangle, Ellipse, Lasso, and Magic Wand. Use any of these to select an area that you want to selectively recolor. Use the CTRL button to select more than one area, like the screenshot below:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1914/tut88ys.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut88ys.jpg)
The dotted lines, of course, indicate the selected area.

Once you have the area selected that you want to recolor. Follow the same steps as above (layers>adjustments>hue/suturation) until you get the color you want:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1255/tut92xg.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut92xg.jpg)

And This is my finished project:
http://img459.imageshack.us/img459/1817/tut103dz.th.jpg (http://img459.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut103dz.jpg)

When you have it the way you want it just import it into the game.

I hope I offered enough help today, go out and start creating! I will mention again though, that I strongly recommend, if you are new to Paint. NET, to review the help topics (HELP>HELP TOPICS). It offers a full overview of what the tools are in Paint.NET and what they do. And if you need any help please let me know.

I have been following your tutorials on clothing recolours and they are great, thanks.
However, as I can not afford photopaint I have been using paint.net and all was fine until I reached tutorial 3, textures. I can not see anyway to transform on paint.net. So I am stuck.
Any ideas?

Which part are you stuck on? I can help you. I will make a texture tutorial soon, but for now is there anything specific you need help on?

Hi there,
Thanks for your quick response. I can not seem to find a way to change scale as per 3rd tutorial of Faylen's, well really everything after that step. I was so pleased with myself when I got through steps 1 & 2 and managed to do some Maxis recolours as this is the first time I have attempted anything like this.
I made some recolours of the maxis track suits as i thought that there really was not enough choice.
Also how do you then go about uploading your recolours?
Much thanks Mandy

Sorry for not responding sooner! So, basically Paint.NET does not have any fancy pattern fill capabilities so you will have to copy paste a lot to fill the area you want. I am going to go ahead and turn this into a tutorial following Faylen's tutorial, converted to Paint.NET. I am also going to use the same pj set and note the dimensions for fill; here we go.

First I'm selecting the same PJ set as in Faylen's Tutorial. Once you find it export it and open it up:
http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/8215/pjtutorial13wb.th.png (http://img356.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial13wb.png)

Now select the area you want to fill with your pattern:
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/8621/pjtutorial23wz.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial23wz.png)
(Note the red box in the bottom corner, this is the selection indicator. It tells you how much area you have selected, this is very important for my methods, crazy as they might be ;) Anyway for this particular outfit the selection is 1024x387 and this is the area we will fill)

Once you have the dimensions, open a new paint.net. Then select File>New and fill in the size in the boxes. Now go out and find your pattern! There are many sites out there, keep in mind though that images that tile well work much better. Now copy/paste your image to the new paint.net.
And keep pasting them until you fill the area. (Note that if your image is still selected you can use the arrows keys to adjust by pixel which gives better results.)
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/1777/pjtutorial39xc.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial39xc.png)
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/9127/pjtutorial44pr.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial44pr.png)
When your pattern fills the whole screen on your new image hit edit>select all then edit>copy and go back to the outfit. And Edit>Paste in to new layer.
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/1797/pjtutorial54vu.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial54vu.png)
Now to get the contours of the body to show through we need to adjust opacity. Over in your layers box double-click on the layer with the pattern, it will bring up a dialog box where at the bottom you can adjust opacity. I set mine to 137,
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/8166/pjtutorial66pz.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial66pz.png)
with this result:
http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/8357/pjtutorial77zc.th.png (http://img356.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial77zc.png)
Now to color the buttons grab the ellipse select tool. While on the pattern layer find where the buttons are (you should be able to see them if you set the opacity properly) and, while holding down the shift button, draw from one corner of your button to the other. (We use the shift button because it will lock up the selection tool so it draws a perfect circle) Now, to select the rest of the buttons hold down shift and ctrl at the same time, this will keep the first button selected while selecting the second and third etc. Like this:
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/4676/pjtutorial80qm.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial80qm.png)
Now while the buttons are selected, hit the delete button or go to edit>cut to delete the pattern fill inside them.
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/660/pjtutorial90hd.th.png (http://img515.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial90hd.png)
Now with your eye dropper tool find a color you like in the pattern to fill your buttons with. Use the paint bucket to fill your buttons with the color. This is what I came up with:
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1150/pjtutorial103ni.th.png (http://img515.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial103ni.png)
http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/7634/pjtutorial112ok.th.png (http://img356.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial112ok.png)
Now we can make this pattern a little brighter! When we adjusted the opacity earlier, it made the pattern dull. Using the Hue/Satuation tool (Layers>adjustments>Hue/Saturation...) we can make the pattern brighter while still keeping the opacity. Play around with the sliders until you get something you like, this is my result:
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/4939/pjtutorial122ay.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial122ay.png)
Now select the bottoms (the pants).
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/3388/pjtutorial132mp.th.png (http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial132mp.png)
Then, using the eyedropper tool, select a color from your pattern that will work nicely for the bottoms. With your bottoms still selected use the paint bucket to fill the selected area with your color.
http://img439.imageshack.us/img439/9379/pjtutorial142jh.th.png (http://img439.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial142jh.png)
When you think everything is the way you want it, save your project in .PDN format (Paint.NET format). Then Flatten your image and save it as a .BMP (Bitmap), and you can now view it in Body Shop and if you like the way it looks you can export it into your game.
http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/5862/pjtutorial151ek.th.png (http://img463.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pjtutorial151ek.png)
Again please remember to always save an unflattened version of your project so if when you get it into your game and there is something you might want to change, you will be able to do so easily.

Judithann,

You have done a spectacular job with these tutorials. Thank you!

Folks, remember that there is a 'thanks' button at end end of the first tutorial in this thread. Scroll back up and give it a push!

It's a small action, but usually means a lot to the person who worked on the tutorial.

Well all the tutorials i could find were using Photoshop. I only have the Paint program that comes with the computer. After reading your tutorial where i can actually follow it using a FREE program. I was floored. And to make matters if better i did my first recolour in less then 5 mins. Thank YOU!!!

Hi there, Judithann,
Hope that you can help me but I have followed your tutorials explicitly along with Faylen's and uploaded some Maxis tracksuit recolours which were rejected for the reason" Texturing not up to standard" I have uploaded them to TSR and they were accepted there. Any ideas what I have done wrong? I have spent hours on these what with trying to get a picture accepted.

judithanndl
23rd Jun 2006, 04:44 PM
Without some pictures of what you are talking about there aren't many pointers I can give you. You could always send me a copy of what you are talking about, like a the .bmp version you were working on. Then again, I'm certainly no expert on texturing, you could always ask faylen's advice too. If you want though I'll take a look. One thing that comes to mind is weather the texturing on the item is blurry or pixelated, that could be it. I hope I can help.

I'm not using paint.net but something similar and whenever I do it it turns out funny. Sometimes it doesn't change and once what I tried to recolor blue came out as rainboe stripes. (I didn't want a rainbow wedding gown)

I wonder if you are using MS Paint because that program has several different ways to save a bitmap. There is only one option that is good with skinning. You need to save it as a 24-bit bitmap. Hopefully it's that simple. Let me know.

tiggerypum

And if you are using MS Paint, you really need to go find paint.net or gimp from the web, because you simply cannot do much with MS Paint, and you'll not find tutorials for it here.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, but I would be glad to help! Just the first thing that comes to mind though, did you follow step 6 (I know they aren't numbered, just count down to six) in the patterns tut? That might be it. You need to change the layer properties in order for the bottom layer to show through. If that's not it, let me know.

So, basically Paint.NET does not have any fancy pattern fill capabilities so you will have to copy paste a lot to fill the area you want.
.

Acutually, there's a "Photofill plugin".
You can get it here: http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=1577&sid=70d08711a5543988155db6d8d855329d

It's really useful! ;)

Thank you for pointing that out. I'll try it out, it might come in handy. Just remember though, that the plugins made for it are not from the publisher of the program, and any would be considered "beta".

I do not understand what people think - that folks would recommend a program that is 'bad for a computer' or 'contained viruses' !!! *glares*

If you have a new computer - make sure you have good antivirus software on it. Not to protect yourself from paint.net but to protect yourself in general!

Paint.net is free, and you'll have to follow the directions there to get it to work, and if you now have Vista, I have no idea if it will run or not, but you can _try it_ because _it's free_. Or go check their website and see if they have a forum for questions (which I'd read for the answer before asking, as others have Vista also)

Without any more details I can't tell you exactly what the problem is there. Except as I thought about it, it occured to me that maybe you are not saving the finished product in .bmp format. Usually, while making textures for the sims game in PDN, you work with layers. So unless you force the program to save in another format, while there are layers present, it automatically saves in .pdn. In order for BodyShop to read the file, it must be in .bmp format. Refer to the picture below for a more detailed look on how to do that. Also, always remember to use the "Save As" feature while saving (File>Save As...), otherwise you cannot change format or location.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/1905/saveasxy1.th.jpg (http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=saveasxy1.jpg)

If that does not work, please provide me with more information about exactly how you are saving your files and where.

Also, thanks for letting me know about the menu changes. I forgot to fix the tutorial when the newer versions of PDN were released. I will fix that real soon.

Thanks very much for this tute! Do you have to start with a pretty bland coloured outfit? I tried this and put a blue pattern over a red shirt but the red was coming through when I set the opacity and it made it look very different!

QuadLover102
Make a new layer - then use white or black to draw shadows/highlights. I use a separate layer for highlights and for shadows so I can adjust them separately.
Draw the highlights - blur, smudge, etc, and then lower the opacity of that layer down to like 15-25%.

Kasi
If you are trying to recolor over something - pick the light version of a garment to start with. You can also desaturate the layer of the original garment, and then experiment with the lightness and contrast to get something lighter to color over.

Kaylap - First, do NOT double post. Secondly your first post had NOTHING to do with this tutorial and the second one didn't either, as meshing is making a new 3d object - and this is about putting a new design on an existing outfit.

I suggest you go to the 'game help' areas and learn how to download. Then start by doing one of the tutorials (like this one, after you install paint.net on your computer and learn how to use it)

"To use this tutorial properly you must have Paint.NET v2.62 or higher"
See the 'or higher' part. What that means is that the author used paint.net 2.62 when they made the tutorial, and the assumption is that the commands used will also be supported by any future version of the program. So whatever the current version is should work for you.

I've made quite a few clothes using paint.net as well as recolors for vehicles, furniture, and other game items. This is the first tutorial I have read that was specifically for the program. I've mostly been playing around and experimenting with things.

This is the method I've been using (I'll post some examples of my clothes and add screenshots later) -

1. In body shop, I choose either the least colorful version of my target item (i.e. white, gray, or light beige) or the one with colors that are complementary (e.g. red-green - the idea thanks to my color-blind guy friends).

2. Go to the "adjustments" menu and choose "hue/saturation". Desaturate the original skin (push the slider all the way to the left) and play around with the "lightness" until it's light enough for your liking. I like having the wrinkles and whatnot in, so I don't turn it up too high, just about 30 or so.
If you only want to change part of the skin (i.e. the top, but not the bottom or a dress, but not the shoes), then use the rectangle select tool first before selecting the adjustments menu.

Now go to the Layers menu and add a new layer on top. In layer properties (either in the layers window or in the layers menu) make it multiple.

From here you can either floodfill (paint bucket) a color, draw a design, or copy a pattern of your liking from another image file. You might choose to bring down the layer transparency some so the original can be more visibible.

For an added bonus, the ImaniOU touch, I also lower the transparency of the original layer (the one from body shop) so the pattern stands out more.

I have been using paint.net for a few months but only recently have been doing serious experimentation with it, including my avatar.

when u install the paint.net do u save or open it ? :deal: :bunny:

Paint.NET is free editing software. It's the software I use to skin, so I decided to lend my help. Today I will teach you the basics of recoloring with the program.

To use this tutorial properly you must have Paint.NET v2.62 or higher. To get it click here (http://www.getpaint.net/index.html).

Start by opening Body Shop. Select " Start new project."
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8141/tut16yl.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut16yl.jpg)

Select the item of clothing you want to recolor. I am recoloring this one.
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/6564/tut23zw.th.jpg (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut23zw.jpg)
Once you choose which one, click the "Export Selected Textures" button.

Next choose a name for your project. It's recommended that you choose a name that you can remember easily, so you can find it later on.
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/2009/tut34rw.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut34rw.jpg)
When you are done naming it click the Check mark to export the texture.

When it's done exporting, this screen will come up. The red box indicates where the new file is located.
http://img459.imageshack.us/img459/161/tut42ce.th.jpg (http://img459.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut42ce.jpg)
When you are done looking at it, click the "X".

The next step is to open the texture up in Paint.NET. Locate the folder that was indicated in the last step, and open up the texture.
Now we can start recoloring!

This part is simple: Go to LAYERS>ADJUSTMENTS>HUE/SATURATION.
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/9504/tut54rs.th.jpg (http://img353.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut54rs.jpg)

Move the sliders around till you get the color that you want your clothing to be. I chose pink for the dress because I like Pink :)
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/2346/tut65qw.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut65qw.jpg)
When you get it just the way you want it click OK and save. Now go back to Body Shop and review your changes. This is what mine turned out like:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1504/tut79lp.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut79lp.jpg)

If you are satisfied with the way it tuned out you can import it now. I'm not satisfied with it though, because I don't like that blue scarf. So now I am going to give you a quick overview of Selective recoloring.

There are four selection tools in Paint.NET: Rectangle, Ellipse, Lasso, and Magic Wand. Use any of these to select an area that you want to selectively recolor. Use the CTRL button to select more than one area, like the screenshot below:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1914/tut88ys.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut88ys.jpg)
The dotted lines, of course, indicate the selected area.

Once you have the area selected that you want to recolor. Follow the same steps as above (layers>adjustments>hue/suturation) until you get the color you want:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/1255/tut92xg.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut92xg.jpg)

And This is my finished project:
http://img459.imageshack.us/img459/1817/tut103dz.th.jpg (http://img459.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tut103dz.jpg)

When you have it the way you want it just import it into the game.

I hope I offered enough help today, go out and start creating! I will mention again though, that I strongly recommend, if you are new to Paint. NET, to review the help topics (HELP>HELP TOPICS). It offers a full overview of what the tools are in Paint.NET and what they do. And if you need any help please let me know.

It's probably something to do with the alpha layer or the UV map. Without seeing the actual dress, it's hard to say.

I can't get into the site without signing up. But judging by the file name, you're working with an alpha mesh... which means there will be more than one texture for the mesh. If your changes aren't showing up, then you're probably altering the wrong texture.

fakepeeps7 could you point me a tutorial for altering cloths with this alpha? i can see this dress is white with another layer red on the top so i think you right, what i altered was the red i see in the files and when i see on bodyshop it shows black only the part that was red, on top i hope im not being too ocnfuse, because english isn't my mother language sorry, i would be very thankfull if you tell me how to mess with it or guide me to a tutorial because i feel lost didn't even know what's it about. :faceslap:

An alpha mesh will have more than one texture. And each texture has its own alpha (that's the black and white file). So if you look in the folder that Body Shop created, you will have at least 4 texture files (more if the mesh uses bumpmaps). The easiest thing to do would be to open all the texture files and see what they look like. If they're all exactly the same, then the easiest thing to do is make your changes to all of them. Make the red thing red. However, if the textures are all different, you need to figure out which one(s) you need to change. Some alpha meshes use more than one texture for the alpha part; if that's the case, then you need to make your changes to all the textures for the alpha part of the mesh.

(An alpha layer is different from an alpha mesh, so I hope I didn't confuse you. If you're going to be recolouring stuff, I would still recommend reading through the tutorials, even if it's just to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology.)
