View Full Version : Custom Doors - Gender Specific

Hi everyone. I am trying to create a new set of bathroom doors that are gender-specific (like the Powder Room and Brick Restroom doors). I was simply going to recolor the existing bathroom doors, but I can't get rid of the little icons on them. So, I thought, I'll just clone and recolor the Just A Door and make it gender-specific!

Except I can't figure how to do that. I've searched the Wiki, but there is no section for "doors," and I don't see anything in this forum. If someone could point me to a helpful tutorial, that would be great. If one doesn't exist, would someone consider sharing some expertise with me? I have SimPE and get around in it realitively well for recolors, but have never attempted anything like this before.

Thank you!

Can using the base game gender-specific doors as the clone bases work?

The problem with the Maxis gender-specific doors is that they have the "woman" and "man" icons on them. I am trying to design doors for an art gallery, and I thought, an art gallery wouldn't have just boring old man & woman figures on their doors, they'd have something more artistic! So I designed two doors that have full-lenth paintings on them. If I use the Maxis doors, the man and woman icons show up on top of the paintings.

I did wonder if I changed the alphas on the icons to all black, would that make the icons invisible? I'll have to give it a try once I get off work. (Shhh...don't tell anyone I'm posting here when I'm supposed to be working!!)

Alas, no, changing the icon's alpha to all black or all white does not work to remove the icon from the door.

I guess I'll have to give up on this idea. Thanks, anyway.

Hold on, ask a moderator to help move this thread to the following forum
Object Creation & Texturing
http://www.modthesims2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=114

You're more likely to get more helps there.

In case anyone is wondering, I am still checking to see if anyone can help (since I earlier said I was giving up.) But since the move to a different forum, I'm hoping someone can help!

Thanks!

I didn't think it was going to be this hard. If you'd like to clone the two doors and send them to me I shall attempt to add the gender-specific code to them. You will need to have already given them their new GUIDs and basically done everything to ensure they are working except make them gender specific.

Inge, when I posted this request, I was hoping it would be you who replied! I will do as you say and get them to you.

Thank you!

If you clone the gender specific doors and want to get rid of those icons, you can delete the whole icon subsets. Delete the subsets called doorvaluemen_icon and doorvaluemen_iconshadow (and the equivalent female ones) in GMDC, Shape (Parts tab), and their related material definitions and textures, and you should be set. Easier than trying to tweak the code.

Oh, OK, I'll try that, too. Thanks so much!

Easier than trying to tweak the code.

Actually that's not entirely true - this is a one line code job!

OK, well, at least, easier for me to do or explain than tweaking the code, then

It does however "feel" more right for Gonski to approach it from the graphics point of view. The only trouble with cloning whether to change the graphics or the simantics is that Maxis keep bringing out new door code and it will become incompatible with later EPs.

Oh I have had a thought. When you make a recolour, you get material definitions in with it. Depending on whether Object Workshop will output the stuff for the little signs, the material definition can be edited to make those invisible. Either you or I could probably help with that too.

There is, however, a shadow to the icon that can't be removed via recoloring the door.

Maxis make me laugh. Of all the things that could have been left out to save graphics processing, making those signs separate meshes with their own secondary shadow mesh takes the biscuit. It would have been perfectly acceptable to simply have them as part of the image.

The gender specific doors borrow the majority of their texture from the cheap door from the base game, and the icon is an add-on subset.

I am afraid I have bad news. This *has* to be done either as a Maxis replacement (ie do not change GUIDs after cloning) or as a code hack. The gender testing for who can go through the door is done only if the door matches the right GUID.

It wouldn't take me long to add that code in the INIT and I think it should remain compatible with future EPs as I will simply call the global test immediately after. There fortunately is no code in the door itself.

Having said that my memory is beginning to stir and I am sure someone already made gender specific plain doors that could be recoloured?

Oh, if someone has already made some, that would be wonderful! I've been trying to create the clone, and keep coming up with no color options--just a plain white door I can't change. I tried reading the tutorial on making a color enabled object, but the SimPE screens in the tutorial look so different from mine, I'm getting completely lost. I think I may have tackled a project that was way over my skill level.

The ideal would be for some hacker to simply add an option to the existing door menu to lock for men only or women only.

The doors made by TunaIsAFish do that...but for some reason, her doors don't work for me. I lock and lock them, but people just keep barging through.

Inge: I just downloaded your Targetable version of the "Just A Door," which allows me to either ban males or ban females. I'll just make some recolors and voila! I have my bathroom doors!

Whew! Thanks for everyone's help! Sorry I was too dim to figure out how to actually make the clones. But thankfully, great modders like Inge are out there making the game better for all of us!

I'm glad to hear you found a solution :) .

So am I - I clean forgot I made those! Though it's not an ideal long-term solution as my hacked tests for using the door completely replace any of the Maxis ones, so you won't get sims reacting to the privacy of someone in the bathroom etc. Still they will suit many people.

Haha! It figures that in a thread about "gender specific" I'd get someone's gender wrong!
