Same thing happening here!
I checked the logs:
C:/Program Files/EA Games/The Sims 2 HomeCrafter Plus/HCBin
In mine I have several TS2Uberkat files, one for every time I tried to start it. They are notepad documents with the following:

and then a long list of Loaded Modules.
What I don't get is the Access Violation. I only have one login on this computer, and it is obviously and administrater's login.
Whaaa??
I'm running a new install of Windows XP, have all the ep's and sp's installed. I did get it to run a couple of times by right clicking the shortcut, and choosing Run as.. and leaving it as Current User, with the Protect My Computer....thing checked. But then it shows floors from the base game only, and limited walls. NO custom content, and I have plenty.
So I tried the Run as..Current User, and unchecked the box to see if cc would show up, and I just get another file in the HCBin log, another access violation.
I just downloaded it today, too. Suppose it's a borked version??
Also, just saw your edit: I, too have Ikea installed.

I have a load of those logs too Amysmom. There's only one administrator on my PC....me! Because you have XP, that eliminates the OS as being the fault. It must be Ikea, that's the only thing different to my old PC. I have googled this til my eyes popped and can't find anything related to homecrafter with Ikea. It's frustrating. If I do find a solution I will let you know :)

Access Violation has nothing to do with the admin rights. It may be, for example, that program tries to access memory (in RAM) which doesn't belong to it, or something like that - that's program internal error, it has nothing to do with security settings.
Honestly, my Homecrafter doesn't work for ages, but I use SimPE and don't care about HCP, since SimPE is better :)

Thanks Jasana. So I can use SimPE to make wallpaper? I didn't know that. Is there anywhere that tells how to do it?
Amysmom
29th Jul 2008, 04:01 PM
Jasana-only reason I went and re-downloaded HC was that I couldn't find how to use simPE for walls and floors!
Please spill it! I was in the Object Creator...should I be somewhere else??
Also, I thought the Access violation may be because when I downloaded HC, I saved it to my "storage" drive, a large partition on my HDD. So I re-downloaded it and saved it to my desktop, and reinstalled, but same thing. WHAT memory could it be using that it's not s'posed to??
Just curious, if I can use simPE, I'm good. After searching the simPE site, Quaxi told someone that you can do walls and floors, but only in Advanced mode. So off I go to learn how to do that.
Thanks all for your input, one would think that EA's tools would be up to date with their own products....oh, wait--*rolls eyes*--this is EA...

I installed homecrafter today and it just won't load. This is a new PC running Vista Home Premium. It's exactly the same (running vista) as old one and I never had a problem running it before. I launched it almost an hour ago and it still won't start. Nothing in task manager either
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Edited to add: I just had a thought. I have installed Ikea SP, could it be that HCP is not compatible?I have had the same problem in the past I run on Vista also. What I have found is if I don't use the shortcut but got to the file location which is easy just right click on the short cut if you dont know where it is then hit open it still takes time for it to open but not an hour. Make sure nothing unnecessary is running, hidden stuff like itunes or anything and it should work much faster. Also getting a registry cleaner might help if you are a big downloader. All the junk files tend to mess with that and bodyshop for some reason.Hope this helps!!! :( :) And the IKEA is probably not it. But who know with the new stuff.SimPE is not ready for that yet but since Homecrafter and bodyshop is an EA software that to me would seem highly unlikely. If nothing else redownload it...

I am having the same issue as well; much to my dismay. :(
In any case, I've tried all suggested in this thread and others here at MTS2 to no avail . . . Homecrafter when executed will show briefly as a process in Task Manager then disappear/ crash. I'm really not sure which EP or SP 'broke' my Homecrafter since it has been quite some time since I tried to use it last.
So, in a very desperate move I contacted EA for support; I have a very hard time just 'living with a broken app' . . . I must find the solution! Lol
I reported the problem with Homecrafter to EA, even sent along one of the TS2Uberkat text files to show them the full error report with exception codes, etc. But guess what!? EA replied with the following:
Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts Technical Support regarding on your concern with The Sims 2.
As to your concern, we do not support or advice the use of this program (Homecrafter Plus) since it's considered as a game modifier. It may cause conflict(s) with the game itself.
Should you have any other concerns or problems regarding EA Games feel free to contact us or you can review our extensive Self Support Knowledgebase (http://support.ea.com).

Technical Support
Electronic Arts™
WTH? LOL?
So, I replied back with:
I'm not sure I'm understanding the reply I've received since Homecrafter Plus is a program offered by Maxis/EA on the Sims 2 Official Website: http://thesims2.ea.com/getcoolstuff/homecrafter.php.
Am I to understand by the reply sent to me that the official Sims Support Site doesn't offer support for a product produced/ distributed by Maxis/ EA? How strange . . . In any case, I would still be highly interested in a solution to the technical issue describe in my initial post; if one can be offered. :)
So, we'll have to wait and see what 'they' say about that . . . really, one would think that such a large company would have 'someone' on the support staff who at least is knowledgable about what software Maxis/ EA has distributed to the public. Really though, it is disappointing that in truth it seems they don't. Then again, the idea that EA produces/ distributes software that they won't support is an even more troubling thought . . . :(
If/ when I hear back from EA on this, I'll post back; I'm highly curious as to how they will respond! :P

* Sidenote: as an aside I am able to create wall/ floors with SimPE (thanks Jasana for the tip on that being possible), but I want Homecrafter to work! Lol It makes no sense to me that it doesn't. Doesn't EA/ Maxis update Homecrafter . . . ever? Nevermind, I can guess the answer already. :giggler: *

Everyone . . .
After the previous post I tried something that I recalled reading while looking for answers to the Homecrafter problem yesterday.
When executing the program from the Windows Start menu (via the shortcut) rather than just left-clicking on it and executing 'normally', right-click on the short cut and select RunAs. Doing this will bring up a box that asks which user you want to run the program as/under. Just check to make sure your Windows UserName is selected (it should be by default) and click the 'OK' button. When I did this Homecrafter loaded quickly/ appeared before my eyes. How strange, but it worked! :)
It seems that Homecrafter now will only run under the default Administrator account, and not just an account with Administrative Rights. I don't run in default Administrator mode (as I keep that account for pure troubleshooting) and just use the account that I set up initially when installing Windows which by default has Administrative Rights.
Hope this Helps! :)

I'm sorry everyone I have never posted before but I am desperate and EA will not help. Homecrafter use to work for me until I uninstalled and reinstalled my games. when I loaded base game I installed homecrafter and it worked and then I instaled University,Bon Voyage,Seasons ,pets and the homecrafter quit working . I have done the debugging instruction that doesn't workfor me I have done the left click run as adminstrator that doesn't work it shows up for a second on taskmanager and then goes away . I don't know what else to do please help.

I found out the probable reason why homecrafter does not work on some PCs. The ts2homecraft.sys (the driver) is seriously out of date. It is timestamped Dec 2004. So until they update, those of us who can't get it to work are stuffed, as the later versions of XP and Vista probably don't support this driver.
Miska, that RunAs option doesn't work in Vista I'm afraid, the only option I get is "Run as Administrator" in the right click menu, which doesn't work either.

Cameronsnan, Christa Boutique et al,
I was way too happy about the 'RunAs' workaround and later found that 'no' this doesn't work . . . you're right Cameronsnan. After being told numerous times by Homecrafter that "There is not enough hard disk space to support these textures" (when in truth I have way more than would be necessary for a measly texture (194 GB free space on one drive and 184GB free space on another) I gave up trying to track down the problem and waited for the response to my reply over at EA. This morning the reply from EA came in, and I have to say I was more than disappointed:
Thanks for contacting Electronic Arts Technical Support. I do apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing with The Sims 2 right now.

One just has to 'love' when companies produce a product, offer it to the public and then turn around and won't support it! :wtf:
I have to agree with you Cameronsnan with regard to later versions of XP and Vista. I'm running XP Pro with service pack 3 and I'm guessing that this is the crux of this issue for me and Homecrafter. I remember some time ago before XP SP 3 was released that there were some aspects of that update that were based on Vista elements (for example, see: http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/microsoft_news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=204700446).
I'm guessing (and this is ONLY a guess) that if I were to remove SP 3 that maybe, just maybe Homecrafter would run properly - since I know for a fact it has been quite a long time since I tried running Homecrafter - well before SP 3 was even heard of, and SP 3 is the only major change to my system I've made since that time. On the 'bright side' I suppose, indeed there is a way to remove SP 3 via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel; however, I'm not sure I'm willing to 'take my system apart' just for the sake of running Homecrafter when really 'in truth' that shouldn't be necessary; EA should maintain its software - all of it - or not offer it for download.
In the end, I should have 'smelled a rat' somewhere when trying the 'RunAs' workaround and Homecrafter loaded so fast! It literally was way too good to be true!
I wonder if anyone would be able to work on/modify the ts2homecraft.sys (homecrafter's driver) to make it work? Just a thought . . .
At least in the end we still have SimPE, but this doesn't excuse/release Maxis/ EA from their responsibility to maintain their software or remove it from the public venue/ offering. Just my .02. :)

Please excuse me as this is my first ever post. I had the same issue today as I tried to install the Homecrafter Plus. I am running XP Pro SP 2 with every Sims 2 Expansion pack and CC pack thru Ikea. Here is what I came up with. I happened to have a previously used version of the TS2HomeCrafterPlus.exe that was modified in 2006 instead of the default one that comes with the download installation.
I used it to overwrite the default one located here: C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 HomeCrafter Plus\HCBin
I then deleted all the error files located in this folder.
When trying to execute the TS2HomeCrafterPlus.exe I noticed in task Manager that TeaTimer.exe was pinging out my machine. I ended that process as it is only associated with SpyBot. (sounds like SpyBot didn't like it to me)
I executed the exe from within the c drive folder and....
It took a little time and lag to load but it finally came up and I am in like flynn.
I am trying to attach the exe in a rar file (hope it works). If anyone else can help by placing it into a zip file for those that don't use rar it would be greatly appreciated.
Hope this helps anyone.....

This solution doesn't work for me. I recently had to reformat my pc, re-install all my games. Then I redownloaded/re-installed Homecrapper.. er crafter. It isn't creating the necessary folders to do as this thread suggests. In fact, it doesn't create any folders at all. Not even a 'Working' sub-folder that is supposed to be in the project folder.
So basically folks, if you at any point have to re-install your games, or reformat your pc, say goodbye to Homecrafter. This sucks. Now I gotta go learn the 50,000 steps involved in recoloring walls etc... in SimPe. :(

Sim_Me, and anyone else still having problems: Go back to post number 19 in this thread, and try THAT solution! It only involves replacing the HomeCrafter executable itself with a NEWER one than EA/Maxis included in their broken download. IT WORKED FOR ME. It`ll work for you!

Ok but it isn't working for me, does it matter if i don't have teatimer on the task manager applications???? I am still very confused. no offence intended but what the hell does executable mean, help...

Everyone . .

I was having the same issue... with Apartment Life! I downloaded Homecrafter... and it was going to the "shared folders" file instead of my main file... and saying I didn't have disk space, etc. I processed the steps above and it's working like a charm.. even showing my already custom made walls!
I am humbled and bow before your genius! Gracias!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear God, come here, I want to seriously hug you!
IT WORKS! It actually works! I've been trying to get it to work ever since I got my new laptop with Vista back in April! Now I can *finally* start on an emo-fied recolour pack of the wallpaper, floor and items that came in the Fantasy part of Family Fun!

I haven't read all the posts yet, but I just wanted to say that at least this post is helpful. I had the same crap with EA when I wrote them. Have zillions of error txt files in my HCBin, etc.
My HomeCrafter worked when I had only the base game and Teen Stuff. Then I didn't use it for awhile and after installing OFB and University it quit working.
While reading these posts, I tried to right-click and use run as. Lo and behold! There was my long lost HomeCrafter. Good tip.
I also want to say thanx for the zip file for the older Home Crafter. If right-clicking ever gives out on me, I'm using that one.

I have thoroughly read all the posts (not just this one) about homecrafter issues and fixes. I have never had a problem with homecrafter (other than the rgiles floor one) before UNTIL I recently had to do a complete reinstall on my computer for video driver issues. After this reformat/reinstall I could not get homecrafter to work. I have spent the last 3 months attempting every idea posted on this site and others and still was not having any luck. This afternoon my issues were finally solved!!!! I wanted to post this resolution for people with Windows XP who are still suffering issues with Homecrafter Plus.
Step 1. uninstall homecrafter.
Step 2. go to c/programfiles/eagames ---- Manually delete any leftover Homecrafter folder.
Step 3. go to My Documents/EAgames ----Manually delete any leftover Projects folder. (you will want to save any floor/wall files you have there first).
Step 4. go to c/Documents and Settings/All Users/Shared Documents/EAGames/TheSims2 ----Manually delete any leftover homecrafter/project folders located here also.
Step5. go to RegEdit and remove all registry keys that say homecrafter......THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP! If like me you don't know how or are uncomfortable messing with regedit seek help from someone (my hubby is network administrator and did mine).
Step 6. REBOOT!
Step 7. Reinstall Homecrafter...BUT DO NOT INSTALL TO DEFAULT LOCATION!!! I selected Advance and simply left the default location path in the install to window. This turned out to be a CRITICAL step for me. Instead of allowing HCP to install to default which turns out to be a combination of MyDocs/EAgames/Projects and C/documents and settings/all users, it forced HCP to install ONLY into the original file path of C/programfiles/eagames and mydocuments/eagames leaving HCP folders out of the whole documentsandsettings/allusers nightmare path.
Step 8. I did replace the exe file with the one to issa found here http://chii.modthesims2.com/getfile.php?file=820985 after doing an advance reinstall. (originally, replacing this exe did NOT solve all my HCP issues. I could get HCP to run and load but it did not acknowledge any .bmp's already in my projects folder or any new ones I made trying to get this whole issue solved. I could not get it to read from the documentsandsettings/allusers nightmare path either and tried all the suggestion posted on that including the read only change etc etc. Nothing worked.)
After replacing the exe I cicked on HCP and held my breathe, but not for long, everything functioned as it did originally.
**EDIT**
I'm not a programmer but I certainly feel that the issue for me (a Windows XP user) turned out to be the triplicate file pathing, adding in the whole c/Documents and Settings/All Users/Shared Documents/EAGames/TheSims2 directory with the orginal 2 caused some serious complications in actually getting HCP to run! While it may solve Vista issues it confuses XP, which I eliminated by choosing Advance Install.

Will it work if you reboot the PC? You may have to remove some registry files if the computer thinks that the program is already installed. If the program appears on add/remove programs, then uninstall it and reboot. Try everything in this article:

Sookiesim! Thank you so much for taking the time to post your solution! I have been pulling my hair out for a month, and finally read far enough through this thread to find your post! :giggler: Following your steps exactly is the only thing that worked for me in getting Homecrafter to start after some walls and/or floors caused it to crash.
Following in the good-neighbor spirit you have displayed, there's a couple of things I'd like to add.
I'm no programmer either, but I ran regedit.exe and clicked 'Edit>Find', typed in homecrafter and ticked the 'key' box in the 'Look At' portion of the window, found the key containing homecrafter and deleted it.
Also, I used Delphy's Download Organizer to re-group all my floors and walls into a folder which can be easily moved from my downloads before I fire up Homecrafter. This way, any crash-causing culprits are out of the way when I'm ready to make a new wall or floor. When I'm finished playing in Homecrafter, I put the Walls/Floors folder back into my downloads before I fire up my game.
Thank you again so much! Perhaps someone else will find this information useful!

First off, I want to say a very big thank you for whoever originally gave the info to fix this. :) I recently lost my XP installation to unrecoverable massive corruption, so I had to reinstall everything from scratch. Today I tried to run HomeCrafter for the first time since the reinstalls, to make one wall I need to finish a lot, and wallah, it wouldn't work! Kept crashing, and crashing, and crashing.
Originally I assumed this was the same problem I had before with HomeCrafter sometimes managing to corrupt itself and having to uninstall and reinstall it. So I tried that, and first off, the uninstaller program kept hanging, after it did remove all the files and folders and shortcuts. Secondly, after rebooting and clearing out the prefetch directory and reinstalling and doing everything I could think of, it STILL would not run.
Then I turned to Google, and found this thread. Sure enough, when I checked my file date it said 12/13/04. I did try the Run as... suggestion as well, and it booted up, but did NOT go to the right folder, because it did not see any of my already installed CC.
Since I keep old downloads archived because I've had to dig them out more than once, I went digging, and found a HomeCrafter installation file that was dated June 2006. Tried installing from that one, and wallah, everything is now fine again. :) The file date on the .exe in this one is 1/11/06.
The XP installation I lost, HomeCrafter had been working perfectly fine, and was only 2-3 months old, installed last summer or so. But I probably used one of my old installation file downloads to put it in. This time, because of massive data corruption on my hard drive, I wanted to make sure the file was fine and redownloaded from EA and installed that one, so apparently that's where the problem snuck in.
The first thing that popped into my mind after installing successfully from the old installer file was to share it because of those here who have expressed confusion on being able to follow the method explained here, but with the 8 MB file size I don't have anywhere I can upload a file that big. =/

Thanks Meadow9259- we already have a copy of the older Homecrafter executable uploaded to the MTS2 servers:
http://www.sims2wiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Homecrafter
However if the version you have is a different one to that, I could upload it as well, as an alternative- it may help a few people who are saying that Issanet's file doesn't work for them. All you'd have to do is to upload the exe to a file host, like Mediafire or 4Shared, and PM me the link. Then I can test it and upload it to the database. :)

Easy as pie my friend i was having issues of saving content, I deleted the original folders containing the HCP, then downloaded and installed the new HCP, opened the HCBin folder copied and pasted the new HCP file in there and deleted the old one and started it up, like a dream now I can load my stuff up. This deal also corrects the issues of the HCP refusing to save items by saying "You do not have enough disk space to export selected textures"

Everyone . .

A belated HUGE "THANK YOU!", Miska! I had been trying for months to make this... monster to work, re-downloaded HCPlus from EA site again and again, only to fail miserably in the end. I am sincerely grateful! <3 <3

We built a new computer for me and after installing all Sims 2 things, I went and downloaded HomeCrafter from the official site but, like everyone else here, it didn't want to run. I thought it'd be a good idea since there may have been improvements in the tool (haha). Thankfully, I still had an "old" downloaded version on my other drive. Uninstalled crap version, installed "old" version. Yay! It works.

Hey! I had issues as well running Homecrafter Plus, mainly cause I am on Vista. Anyway, I followed the 'if all else fails' and it worked. BUT! I have reformatted the computer since then, and now I went to download the old exe file again, and guess what! The link is broken, any help? Please and thank you.

isagrey, do you mean that the file that Issanet posted is no longer available? I still have his archive, and can re-upload it, if needed.

I know this thread hasn't been answered to in a very long time but it's the one I need so Im hoping someone somewhere will see it and help me out.
I have the home crafter tool and the problem I'm having is that it crashes when I click the 'floors' tab. the wall and the ground are fine, but the floors....not so fine. it crashes. I have deleted/moved all the user files like 'suggested' after reading so much stuff and pulling hair out. Un-installed and re-installed (a couple of times) but it's still doing it. so either I can't use this program for making floors which sort of sucks (excuse my bad language) or the walls I created will have to be deleted as well cause they have no floors to match. So that means I can't create anything and have to rely on others content to use. Which there is a lot of it and some just isn't what Im looking for. Hence me making my own. Enough of my ramblings....anyone have any tips that might help me out here?
Oh btw I also did the suggestion in post 19 and still nothing.

I have did some troubleshooting for The Sims 2 Homecrafter Plus. I was encountering the same issues as many of you that posted here. I ruled it out: Setup and Startup
1. Make sure your anitvirus is disabled when you download and install the program. Being cautious for no corrupted files being downloaded. Install and quit. 2.Run the Sims 2 game to associate the files to the program. (Make sure all other programs are not running) Then quit the game. 3. Then start The Sims 2 Homecrafter Plus and select what type of content you want to create exit. Create your content save and then close that program. Now you Must start your Sims 2 game once more for the file association to take place. Now close the program and open your The Sims 2 Homecrafter Pus and click on create content button and there's your content to price and describe and name. Suggestions: If this issue continue once the content is loaded just repeat these steps.
