Posting in this thread for the first time.
I've been playing with building my own terrains for a while. I just finished this one and I have never been more pleased. I tend to favor very small buildable areas and I had to have a couple beach lots.
This was the result:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/Keijra/Sims%20shots/snapshot_00000008_d6c15c4b.jpg
The beachfront area is totally flat and allows for flat beach lots. The upper area is raised a bit and also flat to allow for an airport.
As soon as Photobucket stops maintaining itself I will post the decorated neighborhood.
I need a name for this little hamlet too.

Babolat85, I love the shot of the train coming around the corner. Your neighborhood looks like a great place.
beeps, Great shot over the balcony, love the towers.
Jargon That neighborhood is wonderful, I always get stuck on names. Sometimes I try to name it with something to do what's in the neighborhood map. Very well thought out neighborhood!

Thanks! I'm really proud of it. I tend to stick with small lots (nothing over 3x3) because my computer is on the slow side and gets laggy with anything larger.

Nice 'hoods all!
Babolat: Great as always and a nice idea to put the motorway on top of the railway bridges.
Jagon: Nice, compact looking neighbourhood, I can never think of names either! If you want to go with the flower idea suggested by CinnePin, I thinks Florasville sounds nice.
Elwood (last post of v2 thread): That looks like it's coming along nicely, a good start!

Babolat - Amazing as always! I love the second shot and the way you used the hightway pieces. They just won't fit in my hood.
Boolpropped - very cute! I just have to admire the crisp clear photos you make *green with envy*
Jargon - Very nice hood! I guess you don't have to worry about gamelag or wait for it to load. I try so hard to keep my hoods small, but when I'm playtesting them I think they could be much smaller. Good job!
Amora_s - I love seeing pictures like this, they are such a great inspiration!

Great work everyone!
Jargon - Your neighborhood looks so adorable yet realistic. It just goes to show how decoration can make a huge difference to a hood. I can't think of any names though, I'm awful at that. I've been mulling over a name for my own hood for ages. Maybe you could use a town name generator?
Babolat85 - Beautiful neighborhood, so realistic. I love the freeway thingy stretching on for miles in the second pic, and I love how it looks more like a piece of land than a little isolated hood. Most hoods look like a bundle of houses in a large empty field of sort, whereas your hood looks like one part of a much bigger world. That sounds weird, I can't explain it well, either way I love it!
boolPropped - I like that shot; it looks really calm and serene. I've never been able to set my neighborhoods up in such a way that urban/suburban fit seamlessly together. Can you show us more of Summerset (that's the name, right)?
amora selvagen - You've really made Pleasantview look really different, very nice! I'm rebuilding Pleasantview myself, and I like that instead of moving the houses around and such (like I've done) you've focused on the neighborhood decorations (which I've been shamefully neglecting) instead.

boolPropped, I love your graphics, and the city looks amazing. :D
Jargon, that terrain is so cute, you've decorated it perfectly. I suck at names too, but it looks like it'd suit a floral name, as someone above me said. Good work on it. :lovestruc
amora_selvagen, that looks so awesome! If only Pleasantview always looked like that. I love how you've used things by Criquette. :D

Summerset (Overview)

Wow, third thread allready and some great shots too, neat! :D
Pity i can't find the question i've read few days ago in the previous thread, bus somebody was asking about appartment lots from my last pics.. I must say that yes - these buildings are from Old Fokshire 'hood and it's actually a residential lots since i have created it about a year ago when appartment life wasn't released yet :)
And Wildchild was also asking about a bus station from my last couple of pics.
Yes, yes it is - a bus station :) from my last set that is allready under moderation at MTS2 :) I even have another picture of it combined with a railway station :)

Venison
It's somewhat of a Gilded Age Chicago meatpacking district locale, with the communist commune at the top right and the rest of the gritty buildings just below it.

Elwood, that's right! Last pics are great!
So i just want to show off another try to create a hood that i would play.. i meen, every time i start making a new neighborhood, i come up with another ideas that noes not fit the terrain i've created allready so most of the time i just start over again. This time i've decided to create a new terrain for bridges testing, but later i've realised that it could be great to make it real playable hood. So i've named it Dullfielde.
And here it is:
http://i41.tinypic.com/4jawlw.jpg
http://i43.tinypic.com/2rzopzp.jpg
http://i41.tinypic.com/73dmio.jpg
You may have noticed allready that it is the same terrain as in my previous pic. Worst thing about TS2 neighborhood terrain for me is a shore sand texture that does not fit in some layouts. Long time ago i was trying to replace the sand texture with something more like a grass or dark soil but i've failed. Now i think that in neighborhood mode, there is a shader (not texture) that gives a shore this bright sand look - i should try to figure it out later but any way - i've found the way to get rid of it.
As you know - there are 3 overlay grass textures in hood decos menu. They mask this ugly sand perfectly but they spoil the shore line by overlaying the water color. I've noticed that if you place any object below the water level and over this grass texture, the object hides it and water color looks okay again. So i've made a huge (100x100 tiles) brownish square and placed a couple of it a bit lower than water level to have these unwanted grass texture issues off but keeping all these water reflections on.
In the end, i have a good looking grassy shore line and the water looks like it's kinda dark and dull even close to the shore line (you can notice that at the pics above) - just exactly what i needed :) Didn't tested it in the lot and beach lot mode, but i will :)

Criquette, that is awesome! Any chance for you uploading the SC4 terrain?
Criquette_SC
20th Mar 2009, 2:04 PM
lmfjaxxon, Oh, thank you! :D
Paradise, thanks! I really exited with these shores too finnaly! :) And the Dullfielde it's just kinda ironic name, just because it doesn't looks like a warm and shiny blue crystal clear water heaven, but still has it's charm allready ;)
Anyerfillag, thank you! Concerning skills, i must say tha as a former SC4 geek, i use my experience from SC4 while making a neighborhood :) Placing hood decos on a SC2 terrain is kinda placing props in the SC4 lot editor :)
For example, to have your flora look more natural while placing down the same tree or shrub i hold 'rotate' key to have it rotated every time i plop it at the new place. It gives a little bit more good looking variety to the flora and trees doesn't look like a cloned ones :)
Gonebynow, thanks! Huh, yes, i thought it would be easy to modd it (just like terrain textures), but i've failed, lol. Thanks again :)
Zepe, thank you! Umm, not sure about this. The map itself is totally boring since all the canals (and some other terraforming) was added using FT EP terraforming feature :)
Here's another couple of pictures of Dullfielde. No big deal, just want to show how it looks with walkways and pedestrian crossings removed from the Maxis's temperate road texture :)
http://i39.tinypic.com/ztskr8.jpg
http://i41.tinypic.com/2bsa6t.jpg
Now it looks more modest and rural without walkways and pedestrian crossings :) (i want to add some walkways using walkway pieces on some main streets) I've also made T and X intersection road corners rounded so for me it looks just right :)
You may also see this orange background behind the hood border - this is what i've talk about - a huge square that hides everything below the water level and gives the water this kind of look :)
babolat85
20th Mar 2009, 2:14 PM
Criquette - And are you planning on sharing said T and X road corners? ;) Dullfielde looks great, with the mangrovey areas and the canals, it kinda reminds me of some non-descript town in South East Asia.
Elwood
20th Mar 2009, 9:31 PM
While the topic is on sharing, if you were to upload that underwater texture it would be very nice.. ;) That beachline problem is very familiar to me as well and I've never been a fan of the watercolor in Sims2. :)

Babolat It's not supposed to look busy really.. :D It's a transport hub for the area, but it's going to be a quiet town. :)
I like that neighborhood of yours, it's so unusual to see such high buildings in sims2. Especially the last two pictures are very cool. :)

I love what you guys have done to your neighbourhoods. I really want to be able to make a neighbourhood like that for my Sims but I'm too lazy to actually move them all to a better terrain (and to be honest, I'm a little scared of that mod! I don't want my Sims to get borked!)

Chowgilly - Is that the Twiikii (or whatever the name is) terrain?
I got kinda bored with my Asian city for now, so I decided to go back and start a not-so-specialised neighbourhood. And as my old neighbourhood is safely stowed away, I came up with this.
So far I've only done some of the Decorations, once I've done that, I'll copy it to a new neighbourhood and start populating it.

Wow... I never fail to be amazed when I browse this thread. You all have such wonderful worlds!
Criquette, you are the master. Enough said. :) One photo looks just like Amsterdam! I have a few questions for you though but I will come to that in a minute.
Babolat, you work very quick and your new projects look like they've existed all the time. I like the pier of rocks with the lighthouse at the tip in your marina. Also, it's very beachy, not fairytale beachy with lots of white sand and palms, but realistic beachy with a lot of piers. I can almost smell the salt and the roasted shrimps. And the bridges make me chuckle. They look like massive, man-made waves.
Beatdoc, I had no idea you were working on such a cuuute bay. It is lush, small, and has everything you'd want. The Sims that live there must have a lovely view!
Tenielle, Hamilton Bay looks massive! Did you achieve that in a couple days? I take my hat off for you. It looks really lush and I like how there seem to be different areas.
Treejen, Salem looks like a nice town. The different levels are a fun approach and I like how the shopping street is lined with banners, am I right?
And everyone else who showed their work, I really enjoyed the glimpse in your games! My collection of pretty and inspiring pictures has grown considerably in the past few minutes :D
My work in progress
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v308/SterrenLicht/snapshot_00000022_76e403a2.jpg
I found out about this really nice terrain through the previous version of this thread, I believe. When I put it in my game and started looking around, I just couldn't stop decorating :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v308/SterrenLicht/snapshot_00000022_16e40392.jpg
And here's my question. Like you can see on this picture, Criquettes deco doesn't match the texture of my roads. It also floats above the ground.
Is this normal? Do others experience this too? Do you, Criquette, use some sort of road mod that matches the colour of your deco? (The one you posted a page back, perhaps?)
I would really love to use the deco as it really enhances (will enhance) the hood, but it's hard to incorporate if the buses float :hmm:

babolat: I'm so jealous, :P Your so talented at making hoods and houses! The Keys are amazing, so pretty and relaxing!
beatdoc: Lyric Falls Bay is tiny, and cute!! Gorgeous.
ar2593: Its beautiful, I love it.
kayleigh: Amazing, the placement and mix of trees is awesome.
amora: Its so tropical! The water is GORGEOUS.
treejen: OHMYGOSH. Its awesome! The multiple levels are so cool, and the use of banners is cool.
shrewsberry: o.O I love it!! Did you build the buildings yourself, or are they downloaded? I love the placement of them!
nimi: I love the way the terrain is decorated! And I seem to have that problem with Criquettes deco as well, its kind of frustrating since they're just so amazing!
tenielle: Hamilton Bay is huge, and gorgeous!!
Mkay, since this is a picture thread... Heres some snaps of my For Sims By Sims hood, West Forks. Its the Incy Isle (http://forums.modthesims2.com/download.php?t=116853) terrain, with a few modifications. I based it slightly off JadeEliotts terrain for Island of Thyme.

toesrnotbubbles, good to know it's not just me! And thank you. Your West Forks is looking lovely. It really seems to have different areas with each a different feel. I've been going through these threads more than any of the threads in the picture forums because I'm fascinated and amazed by what people do here. All these pics are so inspiring.
I can't be bothered with Sim City so I grabbed the "sample" template and finally used Hoodreplace to alter the landscape.
This is what it looked like before (http://sims.blackdaisies.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/snapshot_00000004_969fbc1d.jpg). All my mostly played buildings were tucked into one block in a corner.
Here is SimTopi now, and I'm pleased. This layout makes more sense for my city.

Criquette, that's really a realistic neighborhood :)
May I ask how you get the water turn gray-ish in color?
Thank you, Aled :) This kind of water is possible by using this experimental decoration (http://www.grape-frogg.com/crqtt_dull_water_001.zip). Just place it a little below the water level. It will give the water dully looking effect :)

Yeah, but the streets only can be straights...

Criquette
28th May 2009, 8:30 AM
Paradise, thank you! :D I'm sure that there's nothing more that poles in those four pics :)
Shrewsbury, you've done it great even with orthogonal streets! I'm also looking forward to curved ones in TS3, this feature is my favourite in this upcoming game :)
... And i'll continue showing some pics of Dullfielde. Since this is a last TS2 'hood i'm working on (next will be TS3 i hope) i've decided to add some functional subhoods into it. First subhood is a university. Some how i've came up with some kind of a postapocalyptic concept of Dullfielde as a science town. Huge zombie problem is a fictional reality of simworld that Dullfielde is a part of. After big war against zombies, regional goverment decides to prevent zombie attack by controlling them with some kind of giant transmitters. One of these transmitters is situated in Dullfielde.
http://i41.tinypic.com/afca50.jpg
Have no idea how it actually works but it keeps zombies away from the transmitter in 300 km radius :) So it allows normal citizens to live as peacefull as it possible in this reality.
http://i44.tinypic.com/2132is.jpg
The subhood itself is still in progress. In addition to zombies controller, this area will also work as a research center, and some kind of educational institution where sims will be able to get their university graduation. So i'll add a couple of dorms to it :)

Oh, and i'm also experimenting with global horizon decoration:
http://i39.tinypic.com/xcrsb7.jpg
http://i39.tinypic.com/2zisy1h.jpg
I was allways annoyed by the hood borders, so i think this is a hint. It does have some limitations though, but most important thing is that it doesn't affect ingame sky. Does anybody would be intrested in the set of few horizons for different kind of terrains and landscapes/skylines? :)
Paradise
28th May 2009, 9:15 PM
:bunny: Yes YES I want it!! :bunny:
I love those horizons :lovestruc Much better than the usual bright blue paint color. I'm guessing you can only have one version, right? Like a default replacement?

Paradise, thanks :) And.. no! You can use different versions for each hood without needing to restart the game :) It's not a mod that replaces the default it's just a huge deco that goes beyond the hood square :) There will be at least 4 variations of it for different terrain types, may be some snowy versions.. okay, okay, don't want to spoil the thread, i'll give more info in my journal :)
Anyerfillag, thank you! Glad that you find my stuff useful :)

I think Criquette uploaded the telephone poles on the last page, Tempscire? ^_^
I thought those were just the telegraph poles. (Wait, why'd I say telephone originally? Electric. Bah.--Or am I just getting confused by semantics?) Unless that's the "telegraph poles electric line" file, in which case I'm horribly silly. :p
I was trying to spot the ones from this post (http://www.modthesims2.com/showpost.php?p=2353409&postcount=56) in the most recent pictures, in any event.
Edit: pft, now I see them. Conclusion: I am horribly silly but don't care. Viva the power lines!

Criquette - The things you come up with never cease to amaze me. The transmitter thingy looks like something Cold War era, and the horizon is just...wow. It makes the neighbourhoods really seem as though they're just a small part of a much larger world.
SofieAmalie - Is that the Pleasantview terrain? The shot looks good with the bridge in the foreground.

The only Sims 3 thing that has made me envious so far is the neighborhood view :P It also motivated me, as I've been weeks considering building a decent neighborhood for once and all. I also rescued my sims 2 for the PS2 and played for a while, just to enjoy a nice neighborhood view. And I tried to replicate the Rockwell Acres:

It looks nothing like the place on the ps2 game. The hills are too high, but they are the closest thing I've been able to create in simcity.

My neighborhood looks the same as it did the last time I showed pics of it! I'm hoping to get some new vacation destinations built soon, so I'll post pics then.
New Ambleside looks lovely, Nimi, but of course, you already know I think that!

Great pics everyone! I love this thread, it inspires me and gives me a lot of good ideas on decorating my own NH (although I am still not as good at doing it, as many of you are).
ginlynn03 , your 'hoods are very nice, I especially love the 1st one.
Neerie , that's awesome, the desert town promises to be a very interesting hi-tech place, it is cute even now, even as a half-empty area.
Tempscire, what a lovely modern city! I am jealous :)
It looks like in RL.
Essa, I can't stop admiring the great shots, and I love the green grass (Maxis grass sucks)
I've downloaded the mod today, so I hope I'll make some good screenshots of my own, now greener 'hood tomorrow.
The winter shot is beautiful, too.
rome_raven , I love the 'hood and the cute peninsula terrain.
Nimi, your 'hood is AWESOME!
My special thanx to Criquette for his wonderful deco objects.
Here are some pics of Elvenville (a town founded by elves, hence the name. It is cheesy, but, well, I am not good at giving original names to my 'hoods and lots)
The town is in progress, there's much work to do here before the pixel life actually begins.

Thanks Mangaroo! I have used Plasticbox's lots from his Backdoor Lane series to fill up the town. I like the consistency of the houses, and I like small lots, so they're nice and easy to play. I didn't want to build my own lots, and just making over Plasticbox's is taking so much time! I have never had a 'hood so populated before- I have 53 playables (3 Elders, 34 Adults, 4 YA's, 3 teens, 4 children & 5 toddlers) and 9 pets (5 dogs & 4 cats)! I have no idea how I'm ever going to get to play everyone!

Viewpoint Edge. I finally finished decorating it and I'm glad how it turned out. Now to move the Sims in!
http://i34.tinypic.com/2m9ogw.jpg
Viewpoint Edge seems detatched from the rest of the Sim world, due to its unusual location. This tiny town can be found on a lone cliff in the chilly Galarna Mountains of SimNation. It was previously a medivial town that eventually died out because of the long, harsh winters that come every year.
http://i35.tinypic.com/2im9cuh.jpg
The only medevial part of Viewpoint Edge that survived the centuries until today is the Olde View Pointe Castle (made by StephSim). Most of the other parts of Viewpoint Edge were torn down because of their unfit state for living and replaced with more modern buildings. The more "city" part of the town is closer to the edge of the cliff and the wonderful view (Backdoor Lane made by Plasticbox). But there are also starter homes (Newbie Road made by Plasticbox) and more expensive homes (Cookie-cutter homes made by me, of course) farther back.
