This used to be one of my favorite Sims 2 threads and I'm kinda curious about what kind of shops and businesses everyone has in their Sims 3 neighborhoods.

You can download the buyable registers or use the WA one's which you can get from the rabbit-hole category of the build mode.

I can make them usable, the playable part is debatable.

As Aya_Alexa mentioned I use the buyable registers. It works... as long as you don't plan to actively play with the sim you put in charge of the shop. Once you make a cash register sim active, he'll loose his "LocalMerchant" status and stops tending the register. The game will then assign another unemployed sim from your neighborhood to be the LocalMerchant.

I also use MelissaMel's Custom RabbitHoles, in order to enable the sim I assign to the cash register to own that business and rename it. (Edited to add: Also, this allows the business owners to receive weekly payments from their shops. Only fair since the cashiers can't have a job.)

Here's an example: the Moores own a Farm (View (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20-%20Businesses/Moores%20Winery/Moores-Nectary_001.jpg)) with a vineyard and produce a lot of Nectar. They sell (View (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20-%20Businesses/Moores%20Winery/Moores-Nectary_003.jpg)) it via the Nectar Register to their daughter Mya who owns a Nectary downtown (View (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20-%20Businesses/Moores%20Winery/Moores-Nectary_005.jpg)). The Nectar gets added to the Nectar Register inventory and other sims can then taste and/or purchase it (View (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20-%20Businesses/Moores%20Winery/Moores-Nectary_004.jpg)).

There's a new business in Bridgeton. Paul Walker (mechanic) decided it was time to start his own business and opened an Auto Repair Shop. The location isn't the best and the place is a bit run-down. But Paul is confident it will turn a profit... eventually.

It has 30 breeds of aquatic creatures.
I left some floorspace empty for future custom aquariums.
I never had a decent one in TS2, so this will keep me smiling for ages.

My Museum:
The Top floor contains classrooms of various sort, and the two basement levels have some sort of Egyptian Exhibit. The four levels between all open below to the bottom floor and holds various art rooms and display stands (many of which are empty for the future)

Wow! These are all so great! This was also my favorite picture thread with the Sims 2. I can't wait to see more and more businesses as things get more functional with new EPs.

tizerist, do you have every fish in the game in your aquarium? I also think it would be great to see some stocked ponds and waterways.

Silly me forgot to check my messages for awhile and I just now realized they approved this thread for me. Then I abandoned it for over two weeks. Shame on me :(

SO I guess I'll start. I have alot of these buildings as I've bulldozed all of Sunset Valley and have been rebuilding the lots. I don't want to flood this thread yet so I'll just post what I've been working on most recently, and that's my school. I'm so proud so far, I just wish I knew how to make things, then I'd make some goalposts for my football field. Until then, my creativity only gets me so far. I'm open for ideas.

The nightclub was built on a lot I downloaded from TSR and although I modified it almost beyond recognition (in fact, it's the same building as the art gallery bellow) I still don't feel comfortable uploading it.

ll Your businesses are great, I'm so jealous!!! I saw your daycare a couple of last month in the Toddler thread or somewhere and when I saw it on here I was inspired t try and make my own. One thing I would like to know is how it works? Is it just a place for kkids to go play or can the adults actually leave their babies and toddlers there while they work? I wouldn't put t past you to make it work, Your business ideas are genious :)

Lily__XD, I haven't yet figured out a way to make the daycare center work as I want. What I did was put a cash register on the lot and used Twallan's register mod to assign Kylie (the Daycare owner) to that register so that she shows up at the daycare center every day (I made the register invisible with this mod (http://linna.modthesims.info/download.php?t=406614), so it doesn't look out of place). I used Twallan's master controller mod to make Kylie befriend every kid in town and then just invited them over to the daycare center. A very convoluted workaround, but I've yet to come up with a better method.

II: your businesses are amazing, hopefully you will post more pics soon. Any chance you could take pics of the outside of your businesses? I would love to see what they look like.
The exterior is always the hardest, which is why I either don't do it, or do it boringly.

Best friends Bridgette Sandstone and Beth Moonlight have collaborated to build a gallery of their own work! Bridgette is an architect while Beth is a sculptor. Both desire to be celebrities in the art community. Bridgette owns the studio while Beth is more of a guest artist. It's not much yet, but it only gets better from here!

I must say, this thread is very inspirational! In fact, it inspired me to make this business!

ll - All your business look great! That's an awesome hair salon, much better than the one that came with Ambitions. The racing circuit looks good too.

I really like those counters, they are the only ones that properly look like shop counters, I just wish they wouldn't be so buggy. The bugginess is that they change colour when they are linked. Even if you colour them yourself, the new colour won't stick after they get linked.

So far I have several lots (pic (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20Random/10-10-2010_Screenshot.jpg)): 4 are garages, 1 is the media tower+grandstands, 1 is just grandstands. 3 of the garages lots are currently empty. I've placed two Stadium rabbithole rugs and had two rival sims buy out the properties, renaming them F1 White Team and F1 Red Team and created a few teammate sims for each team. Then I used twallan's register mod to assign a few teammate sims to each garage (I've made the registers invisible [pic 1 (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20Random/10-10-2010_Screenshot-569.jpg), pic 2 (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/lindalane/Sims%203/Sims%203%20Random/10-10-2010_Screenshot-570.jpg)] so they don't look out of place). And finally I made each sim get a Professional Sports job in their team rabbithole (the two owners are the bosses).

So now at 7am the register pulls each sim into his assigned spot in the garage, then from 3pm to 8pm they go into the rabbithole (that's how they get paid). From 8pm until midnight they resume their place at the register, then go home.

In the Media Center I placed a Business and Journalism rabbithole rug, then created a few sims and had them apply for a job as journalists. They all have the Computer Whiz trait so they usually hang around the media center (plenty of computers there) after they exit the rabbit hole. The business part of these two lots is more or less set up and I'm planning to build a sports bar/cafe in the grandstands lot.

Basically, the story behind it is that there was once a thriving railway line that went through the mountains of the Saskan Harbour neighborhood I downloaded and to the mainland. Now it is no longer used, but the first station and a small part of the line were left for historical purposes. The main attraction is the bar. Since there's no way to place sidewalks in-game I had to improvise by placing trees to make an improvised sort of path to the building. I may transplant the station onto a bigger lot as the bar is a bit crammed, but I'm okay with it for now.

86caprice, there's a few random tips throughout this thread, but so far, we can't really play businesses like we did with OFB. (Miko09 explains it in more detail here (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=449915)). I use a combination of WA registers and rabbitholes in my businesses. For the photography studio above, I'm testing ani_'s Shop from inventory mod (here (http://www.modthesims.info/d/409607)) to have Ryan sell the photos he takes. I also have a post in my blog showing how I set up the restaurant below (here (http://wilde-legacy.blogspot.com/2011/04/oakleys-italian-restaurant-and-pizzeria.html)).

To tell you the truth, I would love to see a full fleshed-out tutorial on how to run a successful business. It would be useful to those who have wanted to start a business but were afraid of the somewhat tedious process or for those who just want to better their businesses in their own games. Subjects to use would be what type zoning to use for your business, what mods to utilize for the best results, etc. There's good bits of information spread across the internet, but I think it would be better to get all that in one place.

Miko09, I used the Late Night's effects machine and set it to fog. In the pic, it's hidden by the sauna heater in the middle of the room. Buzzler was kind enough to add the effects machine to his vanishing scripts mod (http://www.modthesims.info/d/406614), so now I don't have to hide it, I can just make it invisible. (Edit: Just tested this and making the machine invisible also makes the effects invisible. :( )

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I kind of like Rabbit Hole lots for how pretty they are. Since they're objects, they photograph really well.

Anyway, I really like the City Hall rabbit hole in Monte Vista. It looks like an old church or castle and had a pretty big courtyard with a lot of interactive potential.
