View Full Version : 7zip file support, and increase to maximum JPG filesize

Today, I have added .7z files to the list of accepted uploads here, and increased the maximum size of JPG files from 200,000 bytes to 250,000 bytes.

You can extract .7z files using any one of the extractors found here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html (includes Windows, Linux and OS X links)

7zip is free, and can often achieve better compression results than .zip or .rar. Did we mention free? Yup, no nagware. :)

One caveat with .7z right now is that the site currently doesn't look inside .7z files for custom content, but this will be updated soon.

Will zips/rars still be available, too?

Oh my! Thanks a lot! The increase of maximum JPG filesize will be REALLY useful, at least for me =)

And I'll try 7-zip now ^^

daluved1 - Yes - all files already uploaded will remain as-is. It's simply another option for uploaders - you can choose from zip, rar, or 7z.

Let the "*sob* but I can't use 7z can u upload zip????" whining begin!

7z is so much better than WinRar. Being able to just right-click a file and have 7z make an archive that just works everytime... No nag-ware... Its nirvana of compression technology.

Good news, Delphy! 7z is a format that I use for a long time.

I honestly don't care about 7z. But what I do care about is the image size limit! Thanks for letting us post better quality images!
Anyway, is the limit going to be increased to other formats - especially PNG?
I'm suggesting 250,000 bytes JPG/PNG, and maybe 200,000 bytes others

PNGs don't compress as well for the kind of screenshots we see on the site, so I have no plans to increase the PNG size. And there is no way GIF will be bumped up to that level either... :)

Delphy has done it again! Improved the best site around. I have used 7zip for ages and am jumping up and down doing me nerdy girl dance that it is available now. :bunny:

I don't know much about 7zip, but can it be used for uploading the large world files? Specifically, is splitting a 7z and then unpacking it easier than doing the same with a multipart rar?

I've never heard of 7z but can we fit more content into one than a .rar will hold?

7z files tend to have somewhat better compression than zip or rar files so you can generally fit more into a 7z than a rar (though it depends on what kind of files you're compressing - some don't compress hardly at all no matter what compression type you use).

I'm pretty sure you can do split 7zs.

Izarc isn't a compression format, 7zip is both a compression format and a program. We now support 7zip files, you can open them with whatever you fancy.

I downloaded it today and only one problem, I can't find how to set a default destination folder. As most everything I extract goes in the same folder every time, it's tedious to keep selecting the path every time. But...genius that I am, I deleted winrar, and now have lost that default setting too...lol

Thanks for keeping us updated!

Today, I have added .7z files to the list of accepted uploads here, and increased the maximum size of JPG files from 200,000 bytes to 250,000 bytes.

On the uploader page, it still states:

Maximum size for images is 195kb for JPGs, 150kb for anything else.

Would you be able to download zip and rar with 7zip or only 7zip files. Also wich do you choose if you have windows vista?

whiterider
15th Jun 2010, 02:26 AM
7zip can handle 7z, rar, zip and various other types of archive (like tarballs). Pretty much any extractor, including both 7zip and WinRAR, will work fine on Vista.

I personally use TugZip which supports compressing RAR, ZIP and 7Z as well as a bunch of other formats. Thanks for the updates though. :]
