Sheriff's department warns parents of Pedo Bear image

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department is warning parents about a disturbing new phenomenon made popular by pedophiles and sexual deviants.

The Pedo Bear began as an online Japanese cartoon character, and is known for his "lecherous nature" towards prepubescent children.

Recently, pedophiles have adopted the bear as a mascot.

Although there have been no reported sightings of the image on the Central Coast, individuals dressed in the bear costume and car decals have been seen in Southern California.

Local law enforcement cautions parents to be aware of the image, particularly at public events. For concerns about the image, contact the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement division of the sheriff's department at 805-781-4550.

...Huh? I always just thought Pedo Bear was just a kind of internet in-joke. Are they sure that it's being used by actual pedos? I'd hate to have some guy end up going to jail because they had a joke bumpersticker on their car.

Also, aren't they picking up on this really late in the game? I mean, Pedo Bear has actually been around for at least three or four years by now.

Haha, like the rubber bands you could have around your arm and parents were worried because the colours mean sexual stuff.
I'm sure your 6 year old wants to buy them to hint to sleep with some pedo, you know. How else would she expressed that "she's out there"

God. World is going backwards, everything is being banned and looked down upon. Hurrah.

Haha, like the rubber bands you could have around your arm and parents were worried because the colours mean sexual stuff. Kinda like that. They're rubber bands raising breast cancer awareness, and they say "I heart boobs". Parents wanted them banned from schools because they felt the bracelets were a distraction. You know what's more distracting? Stopping class to tell Billy to take off his bracelet and sending him to the principal.

Them as well.

I was thinking more of the thin ones that you "snap" a certain colour if you want to kiss that person. Stuff that 11+ did and certainly older than that for sexual stuff.

Sort of like these: http://www.deccanchronicle.com/files/Rubber-band-mania-120710.jpg

Anyway, even if the bands did mean that to some school kids, if the kids went on with sexual stuff because of them then the problem is the child not the friggin bands themselves.

Funny that this came up. I actually saw a policeman with a livestrong band on the other day and thought it was nice even if the "hype" has gone away.

I found that whole bracelet thing rather amusing. We had similar bracelets when I was a kid back in the 1980s... but they were just bracelets, things to collect and wear and trade.

Leave it to today's youth to make something sexual out of it.

In my town they were the trend. Everyone wore them, then the teachers started confiscating them and if you wanted them back you had to tell you parents what they were for. Different colours meant different sexual favours. Like if you snapped a blue one it would be a hug or if you snapped a black one it meant sexual intercourse, no-one ever took these seriously, apart from the odd slag. But the point is I would walk into town and see 8 year olds wearing them, does any 8 year old know that that snapping a yellow one is a blowjob (or even what a blowjob is) and if they do, they have bad parents/siblings/friends.

They were known as shag bands

Even if pedo bear was a "mascot" for pedophiles, it's still incredibly silly. So, what, now the pedophiles can all rally together and say "Hey, look at us! We're not so bad. Look! We have a furry teddybear as our mascot now."? ...Seriously? I personally never found pedo bear to be all that amusing anyways.

I also wanted to throw in to the other part of the conversation, that when I wore different colored bands, they were just that...pretty bracelets. And I even went to catholic school. So I'm sure I would have heard about it. Am I just too old? :p ;) :D

This whole kerfuffle reminds me of what was going on in my teen years, when some of the local religious zealots were trying to convince parents that if their kids wore anything with a peace symbol on it, they were worshipping the devil. I think there was a whole list of "bad" symbols that you had to watch out for.

Back then, the boogeyman was the devil-worshipper. Today it's the pedophile. (Although, pedophiles are a lot more dangerous than teenagers who wear hippie t-shirts. But the hysteria seems similar.)

People just overreact when they don't understand something.

When I was 15, I stole half a pack of cigarettes from my parents and smoked them throughout a month or so. I didn't do it because I wanted to be cool, I did it because I was tired of people lying to me about cigarettes- I knew they were dangerous, but I kept hearing very different things from teachers, parents, commercials, internet et.c. I didn't care for them, so I stopped. But EVERYONE who knew about it (most accidentally, because choir girls somehow don't get that it's not okay to go through someone else's bag) threw a gigantic shitfit, started crying, offering to buy me the patch, and threatening to tell the teacher so I could be expelled and sent to rehab (no joke). This is after maybe two days of smoking. Of course I was dumb (what can you expect from a 15 year old?), but at least I wasn't painfully dumb and hysterical.

Oh, I've got many stories like this. If you had spent two minutes at my old high school, you'd know exactly why they lowered the standards for the TAKS.

lol so from a link that was posted...

According to the news report, the Sheriff's Department believes that pedophiles are using the image as a mascot and advises that if a viewer sees the image, to use caution with whoever may be associated with it.

I would just like to agree with that because those that are using the image are likely from 4chan.

starved4pizza
20th Sep 2010, 06:10 PM
4Chan was the website that turned Pedobear into the unofficial pedophile "mascot", strictly for lulz only. I think he actually started out as a mascot AGAINST pedophillia in Japan, but I could be wrong.

Marcos_Edson
20th Sep 2010, 07:15 PM
From the link I posted...

The cartoon version of Pedobear is derived from ASCII (text character) art popular on Japan's popular 2channel message board. That art, known as "Kumaa," was appropriated by the Fukuoka City Consumer Life Center in Japan last month, to be used as a mascot for consumer tips on avoiding falling into debt and other financial problems.

Pedobear isn't mocking pedophiles. It's a meme mocking the crazy fear and imaginative assumptions that people make in the pursuit of taking down pedophiles. So pedobear drives around town in his van spray painted with "free candy" down the side hanging out at elementary school yards, not because anyone really thinks a pedophile would do that but because pedobear is this over-the-top exaggeration of the "think of the children!!!" folks mocking THEM.

It's the same with people who think an upside-down cross is a symbol of the devil. I mean I never had much with religion, but I've enjoyed myself a lot telling the 'death metal dude' that came into my shop thinking he was uber-satanist that I thought he had a very cool St. Peter's cross tattooed on his upper arm and that it was quite a message to tell the world that you thought you weren't worthy enough of Jesus.

You also always have the folks that go yelling 'Nazi' when seeing century old art from India. Yes, that is indeed a swastika, a sanskrit one from about the 5th century BCE....

Some people are just so amazingly stupid. Or let me rephrase that, unable to see things in a wide historic perspective... *sigh*

^ Banning parents from taking photographs of their kids in certain public places. It is just a wee bit OTT.

There was an article on BBC news about how some people want to ban teachers from asking kids to raise their hands because it's detrimental to the kids who don't. I can't remember if it was about protectings kids who are too shy to raise their hand in class, or if it was something else, and I always take what I read in the news with a pinch of salt (a whole bucketload if it's the Daily Mail) but the whole notion is pretty preposterous.

If you knew what you were talking about, I'd agree that pedophilia is wrong (not that pedophiles should be "shot/burnt/strangulated to death") However, Pedobear is not a mascot for pedophiles, in fact, people that molest children probably don't even know what Pedobear is. It's just an internet meme, people put pedobear in pictures of a father with his son on his knee, or a picture of Justin Bieber- it's just a joke, there are no children actually being molested.

Next time, please try to tone it down a bit.
