Okay so i downloaded a bookcase but its only for decoration,
How can i make it a fully functional bookcase? This is possible w/o needing to modify the 3d object itself right? What i have in mind is to clone a bookcase and put the necessary files there, but my problem is i dont know what are the files that i need to copy and replace. Not really sure about this method, i didn't try anything yet so i really need your help. :)

Start here -- Object Creation for Absolute Beginners (http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Tutorials:Object_Creation_for_Absolute_Beginners) and make the table it teaches you to make. You can delete afterwards if you want, but you need a chance to work thru the steps of object creation in a step by step fashion.
Now that you have some idea about object creation ...
-Open the decorative bookcase. Extract the mesh and the texture.
-Clone a bookcase. Not all Maxis Objects are good clone candidates. Ignorant Bliss has made a handy list to get you started -- A list of good objects for cloning (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=173017)
-You will need to delete or modify the 'books' subset from your cloned object so it works with your new bookshelf. Also, don't forget that subset names have to match. The least confusing, but certainly not the only, way to make that happen is in your 3-d editor.
-Import your new mesh from the decorator bookcase
-Import your new texture from the decorator bookcase
-Make tweaks to TXMT, if needed.
