View Full Version : The Sim Tracker

I just downloaded the program and it looks amazing but I do have a suggestion. I use a tablet alongside my main computer which I use to keep notes, so that's where I downloaded it. However, it has an unusual resolution, so I'm unable to see everything. Is there any way you could make the window resizable? Or is this already an option?
Thanks. :D

With smaller screen resolutions you can hide the lists on the left. Click the view menu and select "Hide Lists". You can also open the options page, and check off "Start With Lists Hidden".
What is your screen resolution, btw?
I tried to make it fit in as small a space as I could. But, if I know what your needs are, I maybe able to help with it.
Also: Sim Tracker is now online at www.rlm-soft.com
This goes out to anyone using the Sim Tracker, and I will only ask this once: If you can send a small donation, even $1 or $2 will help a lot.

RebaLynn, the point of the creator feedback forum is to gain feedback in preparation for upload here, not for feedback once the upload is finished. If you like, I can move this thread to the CFF forum for you, as this is not the ideal place for a feedback thread (you will likely get more testers to notice this if it is in the CFF or Modding forum).

I noticed that, a bit too late. Not sure where this should go now. If there is a better place, feel free to move it. I will, however, remember this info for future projects.

I've downloaded it and have been playing with it in between chores to be done today. It is so massive, and has the ability to track so much more than I ever thought I'd want to track! I love how I can track as little or as much as I want. Thank you so very much for bringing this tool to the community.
If you are continuing to work on it, can I please ask you to consider putting a "siblings" tab after "spouses" and "children" in the family area?
Thank you so much again. I'm tempted to start a new hood just so I can use this program from the beginning!

I am still working onit, and probably will for years. I have been thinking about the siblings tab also, so will add it. Probably after the new year, though.
Once the program is posted, this thread will, most likely, be closed.

It's a good idea to have a thread available, where people can report problems and ask questions.

I downloaded from your site, but when I first attempted to run it, I got this message:
"To run this application, you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:
v4.0.30319
Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework."
While I had no problem finding the download link (http://microsoft-net-framework-4.en.softonic.com/) and it works fine now, just thought I'd mention it as other Simmers may come up against it too.
EDIT: Having said that, now that it's working and I've been able to play with it a little, thanks for such an amazing program! :D

I know that I had spoken to you via email during the testing phase about this same issue. I've found that on my laptop (1280x800), even hiding the lists doesn't help - the window is still a touch too wide and much too tall. I can just about access the "Cancel" and "Save" buttons on the Options page (the tops of the buttons are accessible, but the labels are hidden beneath my taskbar), but I have absolutely no hope of accessing the status bar or the "Add" buttons for sims and households on the main page.
These issues seem to be restricted to my laptop (my desktop was working just fine with resolution - I believe my monitor is somewhere around 1280x1024).
Awesome to hear that it's been released and thus far is being well recieved! It's an awesome program! :gjob:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851

At the very least, Microsoft will give you the correct and complete system requirements.

Thanx, one more thing I wanted to ask: for some reason I cannot add anything to the "College Attended" area, although I've specified an education subhood. It's not possible to write in that field, and the dropdown box doesn't show anything. I'm not sure what's wrong, maybe I did something incorrectly.
Btw I love your program more and more, it even has info on the linked careers in the education department and skills required! :)
Is it possible to add school marks in future as a dropdown box rather than the "Earned A+" field? I usually track school marks for my sims, like B+ or C-, many of them tend to have lower marks than A+.
And another question: what should the picture resolution for the sim image be? I used 256x256, and it came up kind of squeezed from top to bottom :)

College attended ... Forgot to add this to the Help section, sorry ... goto the options page "Tools > Options" on the Sim Tab - Education Tab, you can add colleges there.
School Marks ... I can do that.
Picture .. should have aproximately a 7x5 ratio to work best. I use a 600 x 450 for my pics. I can make some changes so that any size works.

Sorry to bug you again, but I noticed that you cannot specify a custom career in the career track, you can only choose from the list. The same about previous addresses, you can only choose an address that you've got in the database already. Most of my sims are employed in custom careers and most of them "moved" from another sim city, so I can't quite specify their previous addresses by choosing from the dropdown list. If possible, would you please make those fields capable of being typed in, so that custom careers and addresses could be added?
FranH
26th Dec 2011, 10:32 AM
You can edit the careers, in the "options" part of the program. You can add careers and delete them if you want. I've added 'unemployed' with no levels in my game.
However, for Reba: there is a problem with choosing the top levels of any career-I'll be sending you a error report shortly with the coding.

I highly recommend going over the Options section throughly. There is a lot of things there.
As far as the previous addresses go, they are filled from the household list. I could add a way to input ones that are not in the household list, however.

Fixed: Report titles not lined up correctly.
Fixed: Options List not selecting correct Sim Options Page.
Changed: Any resolusion picture should work now.
Changed: The Layout, in a big way.
Added: Right click context menu item to Sim List ... Show ID's in List.
Added: Right click context menu item to Sim List ... Sort by ID.
Added: Right click context menu item to House List ... Show ID's in List.
Added: Right click context menu item to House List ... Sort by ID.
Added: Window Splitter to resize either side of the screen.
Added: In Options - Allow Teen Jobs for Young Adults.
Added: In Options - Option to Hide Sim Tab Pages you do not want to use.
Added: In Options - Option to Hide Household Tab Pages you do not want to use.
Added: On Sim Notes Page ... Button to add a previous address, not listed in the household list.

Reba, I don't know if anyone else (beta-testers or the like) has mentioned this, but I spotted a spelling error in the "skills" field. It should read "Fire Safety", not "Fire Saftey".
While I've manually corrected a couple of the LTWs in the "Options" tab (being able to was a godsend) and am naturally used to American spellings through reading many books, not being able to alter that one drove my internal (British) spell-checker crazy!
I too would love the addition of a "Siblings" tab if it's possible to incorporate. The auto-linking between spouses and children is truly awesome, but in large families (especially those with both full and half-siblings) being able to see at-a-glance who a particular sim's siblings are would be much appreciated.
Having said that, I think this is an amazing program and am awed by the amount of work that you've already put in.

I'll fix it for the next release. My only excuse is that I am very lysdexic, er dyslexic :) and my spelling is not the greatest.

I was also having this issue yesterday, specifically when trying to "link spouse". I can enter the program without having to redownload, but I couldn't get an existing sim to link to another as spouses. I'm going to have another go at it tonight and see if it does the same with children or creating a new spouse.
I'm also still having awkward sizing issues (I can resize the full program window, but not the width of the lists column - and I'm not sure if the status bar is supposed to be hidden when the lists are, but that's what happening to me), but it's workable for my purposes. I'm having to constantly show and hide the lists in order to get from household to household and sim to sim. I also still can't access the actual "Add" buttons on the lists column, but I found the add via status bar function.
ETA: The issue seems to be contained to the "spouses" tab. It's happening with both the "new spouse" and "link spouse" buttons. I don't know if this would help to track down the problem, but here's the "problem details" that Windows gave me when I forced the program to close:

You can get .net Framework 4 from here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851
I can find no reason for spouse or child linking to hang, unless you are still using old data, from an earlier, flawed version. I deleted all my saved data from "MyDocs/RLMsoft/W7-SimTracker (including the folder), after fixing the reason for the hang, and now it is all working fine.
There is a way to make sure the spouse linking issue goes away, but you will not be able to list a sim in the spouse section more than once. If this is OK, I will prceed post haste.

I do like the new view of the newest version! Have had no problems with that-but have sent a report to you about another issue.
But I've experimented with something in the 'spouse' area. Say one spouse is alone, and no partner to put in. I have found that for the children to link up as siblings they must have both parents to do so with.
I've put in a deceased partner or an ex-wife/husband to make the full parent set and thus the children will be 'related' to each other.
But I'm having issues with that section as well, and they're in my beta report just sent this morning.

I had erased all the data from the RLMsoft folder prior to today's issue. I'll try a complete uninstall/reinstall for v1.1 and see if that makes a difference, and be sure to grab the error details if they come up this time. Otherwise, I'll attempt to replicate the scenario on my Windows 7 tomorrow - maybe this is just my laptop out to get me for giving it the nickname Crappy Lappy.
ETA - So I think the problem may have been placing commas in the household names. As soon as I entered the household name as "Myron Caliente" instead of "Caliente, Myron", the problem went away. I'm still getting the same "Unhandled exception" error that I sent you earlier when removing spouses, but linking is no longer causing issues.
However, I have noticed that the Sim window does close out after adding or linking a spouse, causing me to re-enter the household window and select "View this Member" again to continue entering data.

I need to mention, in the help section, that some reserved characters, like commas, back slashes, and a few others may not work, though, I did not think it would be a problem.
Forever - I have not tracked down the reason for the sim window closing, after adding a spouse, but I will keep looking for it.

I'll keep working on the sibling stuff, the coding ofr it is rather complex.

I had an insperation at breakfast this morning, and now the siblings tab will work properly, as long as at lease one parent is listed. Sims with no parents listed will not display any siblings. That will take some additional coding, and I might do it in a future release.
Issues involving new options being added, should also work without errors.
I'll be posting version 1.12 after somne alpha testing this morning.

I downloaded the latest version, and the siblings with 2 parents do link up..will be happily anticipating the next version-but I figure that those without any parents anyway are going to be generation 1 in my game, thus they do not have parents-sort of 'immaculate conception'.
But it's really sharp looking now-the lists all line up and are really nice looking!

Eventually, I want to add the ability to pick and choose what information displays in each list. Right now, since someone added new small pets, I added a way to keep track of custom small pets :)
Time for me to do some testing. If all works as planned, I post this update to the sky drive.

Well, it all looks good. Beta Testers - Version 1.12 is now on my skydrive.
A list of changes ...
Version 1.1.2
Fixed: ALL error's when starting because of new options.
Fixed: Siblings now reporting properly, even if only one parent is listed.
NOTE: Sims with no parent listed will not show as siblings, even if they are supposed to be. I may add this feature in the future. I just have to work out how to do it.
Added: Support for custom Small Pets.
Please DO fold, spindle, and mutilate it ... enjoy!
Edit: Just updated to 1.1.2.1 - took care of a minor formatting problem.

I've sent you an email about the still present problem of sibling linking. If I'm correct, you will have to configure the program to accept that there is no 'mother' if the parent is a male-single or otherwise.

That was exactly the problem. I had old code still in that kept motherless sim's from showing siblings. It's been replaced by better coding.
Beta Testers - Version 1.13 is now on my skydrive.
A list of changes ...
Version 1.1.3
Fixed: Issue with Sim's siblings not showing properly, if no mother (or parent 1) is listed.
Changed: Options window now resizable.
Added: Check so you can not add the same sim to the social list more than once.
Added: Unlink form other sim's social list, option.
Added: Show ID in social right click context menu.
Added: You can now sort the Sim Siblings list by Name, Gender, or Age.
Added: You can now sort the Household Roommates list by Name, Gender, or Age.
Added: Last sorting option now saved.

I didn't want to post it on the feedback thread on the download because I feel that it would be better suited here. Downloaded the DOT NET framework for it got everything installed, it worked. Had it running while I ran the game also and kept switching back and forth to add in stuff then decided to stop playing but keep editing because it was a new hood and I had mostly everything already on paper to start with. Only now it seems to crash every time I try to open the program by itself. Says "problem caused the program to stop working correctly windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" Does this only work if the game is also running or would it be an issue with the NET framework? I've tried 7 times now it won't open, it keeps crashing. Is there anywhere I can find a error report (if any are generated at all) to maybe help you out?

Sadly, during testing we missed a few problems. However, I am about to upload a new update that will fix most of them.

Hi Reba I have downloaded the net framwork and redownloaded the sim tracker but, I am still having problems being able to open the program when I click on the sim tracker icon. I still have to click on the other icon with the red arrow(don't know what else to call it sorry) and then I go through the whole process of redownloading the program again, this is the only way the program will open for me and then program still freeze up on me when I try to link to parent and child I get "not responding" please help.

Okay I will check but I think it is running as admin.
I had this exact same problem when I started testing it. Do this and it will run for you:
Right click the Icon, choose Properties. On the Compatibility tab, check the Run this program as an administrator.

Is it possible to enable a custom date format? I understand that dates are needed for people who track how they play, but I track dates differently. One generation is one year of sim time in my game, so for example, I'd mark somebody's marriage as the one that happened in a particular sim year, rather than put up a real life date of it which won't tell me anything in the future of when it happened in the sim world. If it's possible to enable people to enter custom dates in addition to the pop up window with a calendar, I'd really really really love to see it :)
It turned out that there are more questions. When I click "add new address", nothing happens for some reason. And on the education panel you can't specify which mark the sim had when attending school, are you still planning on adding the option to specify their marks?
P.S. And I second another person's sentiment asking for an ability to add custom scholarships in the future, as I myself use a hack allowing silver business badges to count for scholarships :)

As it happens, I am working on all of those :)
I have been giving a great deal of thought to custom dates, and was trying to decide how to impliment it. I'll be doing it soon.
"Add New Address" for which item? (I'll check them both, just in case.)
Grade Marks. It's been a bit chaotic for me, of late, and that one slipped my mind (I'm adding it to my todo list now).
I had planned to do the scholarship thing from the begining, but forgot to finish it.
Look for a new update in about a week (if not sooner).

Thanx, it's really nice that these things are going to be added!
"Add New Address" for which item? (I'll check them both, just in case.)
For adding the previous address.
I have something else to report: when I click an "Employer" button to pick an employer for my sims who work in an owned business, the last version of the program produces an error and nothing else happens. It says "the value can't be nil".
And I realize that I'm adding to your to-do list, but there's something else I'd really like to see. Most of my sims own a business and you can specify the list of employees in your program, however, you cannot specify what they do and which badges they have. I thought that maybe that field to the left that normally only lets an employee-sims choose an assignment could be somehow used in that case, so that when you click an employee on the list, you could see what she or he does? Although to be honest some of my employee sims work jobs that aren't present in the list at all (using mostly controllers from SimWardrobe), like musicians, fishers, etc. And I'm not sure about badges, but maybe they aren't as important as an assignment.
Normally I use a separate file to track all businesses in the game, which specifies a business title, whom it belongs to, and a list of employees with their functions and badges. So I thought it would be great if something like that existed in your program, too, eliminating the need for that business tracking file. :)

I got side tracked and never finished the "Add New Address" Feature, sorry about that.
I can add a way to add more items to the list of positions / jobs, no problem.
If you can send me a list of items you'd like to keep track of, I am sure I can add them at some point.
I found the reason for the error, and will have a fix for it (as well as a few other items) no later than Monday.
Just keep in mind, this is a big job, and I am doing it alone. So it may take some time to get new things added.
You will be happy to know, I did add a data back up function to the options page (and I will add it to the main menu later).

Sorry if this has already been mentioned or you've already fixed it, but I'm having a problem.
Just this morning I downloaded the newest version on your website (1.15?) and began adding families for a new 'hood I'm making. I made a few households and then changed my mind and deleted them. I then made new ones in their place. The first thing I noticed was that the new replacement household already had a family member--a sim left over from one of the households I deleted. I removed him and everything after that seemed fine.
I then created another new household, but now whenever I click into that one, I get an error message about an unhandled exception, and at the bottom it says "Index was outside the bounds of the array." If I click Continue, the error goes away and everything else seems fine, but it just comes back the next time I leave the household and then re-enter it.
EDIT: Turns out I cannot add any sims to this household either. If I try, they take on the name of a sim from another deleted household. If I try to add a second sim, I get the error message and they never get added.
PS: Somewhat unrelated...is it possible to change a sim's name after they've been created? Clicking their name when I view them won't let me type anything.

Please get version 1.18 from this site (Mod The Sims) I'll update it on my site later today.
You can change a sim's name from the Sim List. Select the sim, and click edit. I'll be adding a way to update from the sim page, later.

I'm closing this as CFF is really for preparing an upload, and Sims Tools would be a better place to continue.
