View Full Version : I want a Maxis Match hood...how to start over?

Hi there,
the last days I found something in the game I had not expected...though it had always been there: Comic beauty.
After years of playing a heavily CC-stuffed game I suddenly realized the Maxis comic style appeals to me and I want to cut back on my Downloads folder. As I had just started over and have a new hood with only four families at the moment, the body shop content was easy to manage. I just pulled out my BS folders and replaced them with Maxis Match skins, hair etc.
Now that it comes to furniture and build stuff it seems a lot harder. So here are a few questions:
What would happen if I just pulled the furniture folder while stuff inside is in use on some lots? Will my game break? Or will the furniture just reset to Maxis stuff?
Is it somehow more clever (or safer) to visit all the lots and delete the CC-stuff from there first?
Any tips, help, suggestions to make it easier or...more awesome? ;)
Thanks in advance,

I would assume that it's much safer to delete your custom content, house to house, instead of packaging then placing your homes in the new neighborhood.
A few of the homes whose custom content I deleted out-of-game (from folders) just resetted to a Maxis object. The homes haven't crashed or anything, but that was risky of me for doing that. Luckily I had back-up folders of my neighborhood and custom content prior to deleting the custom content.
So yeah, it's always better to be safe and do the teadious task of deleting the content slowly but surely.

Furniture resets to whatever it was cloned from, I believe.
But it's still safer to go and delete it from your lots if it's in use. Especially terrain paints... actually, I think it's better to just delete the lot entirely if it has custom terrain paints. They're the devil.

As I have only five custom terrain paints in the game and know exactly where they are (and want to keep them), they're not exactly a problem. ;)
Generally I used very limited build mode (mostly just recolors of windows and doors plus some door add ons sitting on two tiles instead of the usual one) stuff that I really want to keep in whole and my downloads folder is quite organized.
So I will go to my six custom lots now and delete all custom content and then pull the 'furniture' folder. Should be a safe thing...*hopes*
Thanks for answering!

I'm usually all for erring on the side of caution, but I've never heard of any issues with simply removing folders for furniture, counters, walls, flooring, makeup, hair, skintones, etc. (eta: Until now. See Mootilda's post below and consider my comments accordingly. :) ) They'll all either be replaced with a default item, or there will be a bare spot where the custom item used to be. Going in and replacing these things by individual lot and sim before deleting is a waste of time, I think.
Things like custom careers, custom foods, and some mods, are what you need to look more closely into for safe deletion procedures.
ETA: Of course, you can always (and should) make a backup of your current game as-is, just in case.

Almost all CC will either revert or disappear. However, I have had lots crash or load infinitely when CC was removed. So, it's safest to remove it yourself before removing the CC from your Downloads folder.

You're so lucky to only have five custom terrain paints, I've picked up dozens over the years and they are a bane to my lots. Tried getting rid of terrain paints in CI before installing two lots recently as no I don't need Jack Sprats version of river pebbles-again, thank you. But instead of just not showing the whole ground flashed blue.
I consider myself to be Maxis Match but I use plenty of furniture and other items that require a mesh. Often I'd rather take a recolour, but being a new mesh doesn't exclude an item from being MM, rather how does it look in a room with Maxis items? Does it blend in as a better Maxis item or stick out like the weird relative? I would look at it against later EP items, not base game ones as things improved a lot in later EP's.

On a couple occasions I had time stop on the lot after I removed some used in game CC from Downloads folder prior loading the game. Typing boolprop cheatsenabledtrue and choosing Delete option from the popped up window solved the problem, at least time resumed and Sims began to move again, I don't know if there was any damage done to the game by this.
I also removed used in game CC from Downloads folder countless amount of times and nothing bad happened, the objects became Maxis ones, became flashing blue or nothing, just empty spot.
