12th Jun 2012, 02:45 AM
I recently had my HP Pavilion laptop reformatted and its 64-bit Vista Home OS reinstalled. I've been able to install the Sims 2 plus all of the EPs and SPs. I did it using specific collections: Sims 2 Double Deluxe; the University Collection, Best of Business Collection, Seasons, Bon Voyage, Freetime, and the Apartment Life that was the second half of the Apartment Life Limited Boxed Collection (came with Double Deluxe and Apartment Life in it.) I separately added the Holiday 2005 SP and the Glamour Life SP, too.

My game seemed to be fine until it crashed. I restarted it but, after a bit, it crashed again. I looked in my log and this is what I saw:

The kind folks at the Plumb-bob Keep website steered me towards the process about how to use CFF Explorer to edit the .EXE for my game (M&G, since that is what the loading sequence at the start of the game happened to indicate) but CFF Explorer won't let me overwrite the .EXE--it will only choose to save the edited file elsewhere in the folder (under a different name than the original .EXE) I notice that the edited file is saved so that it is no longer an .EXE--it's classified as merely a FILE (this according to Properties.)

How can I overwrite the .EXE as per the instructions..? Is there another way around this Access Violation error?

Thank you.

WOW--my brother made me go back and take a good look at how I opened the EXE in the CFF explorer...he pointed out that I had to remember to pick HOW I was opening the file as well as HOW I was trying to save the edited file, too. This time around, I made sure the CFF Explorer opened the EXE as an EXE file, and it overwrote the file like I wanted! Now I'm going to go check whether this works out.

Thanks for letting me post!

I just tried to run the game after making the various adjustments, and it crashed anyway. Sigh.

Does anyone here know how I can fix this..?

Here is the log the crash generated:

First, go back to your backup of the Sims2EP9.exe. That way, you won't be trying to change something which may already be damaged.

Next, why not give us your system specs, so that we can see whether your problems might be related to your hardware:
http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:System_Specs

Have you done the Game_Help:Game_Problem FAQ? If not, you should also do that to rule out CC, problems with your save game, etc.

IIRC, HP are known for having cooling problems. To determine whether or not overheating is a cause of your problem, please follow these steps:

First, download and install the HWMonitor:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Run the program - you should see lots of numbers; if you don't know what any of them mean, don't worry - you don't have to. :)

With HWMonitor running, use your computer normally for twenty or thirty minutes - no games, just browsing the web, using IM, playing minesweeper etc - and at the end of the twenty or thirty minutes, take a screenshot of the HWMonitor window and save it.

Then do the same again, keeping HWMonitor open, while you play Sims for twenty to thirty minutes. If your game is crashing before the thirty minutes is up, just play until it crashes. If your computer is freezing, shutting down, or restarting itself, play for as long as you think you can before the freeze/shutdown/reboot, then quit the game. Take another screenshot of the HWMonitor window.

Finally, attach both screenshots to a post in this thread - you can upload them to photobucket or tinypic etc, or you can hit "Go Advanced" in the Quick Reply box and use manage attachments to upload them to MTS.

Here's the first Screen Shot (after 20 - 30 minutes of playing):

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee235/donnlap/Shot1.jpg

And the second shot when my game crashed (about 15 minutes or so after I started to play the game):

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee235/donnlap/Shot2.jpg

At this moment in time, I really don't have any CC in my computer that I didn't already have before my computer was reformatted and reprogrammed, but I've been going through what is in my Downloads folder just to make sure. I *did* have that Holy Trinity Church lot that originally started the whole game-crashing problem (or, more accurately, was present in the game when my computer first started crashing the game, but the lot and its contents have been removed, and my game is still crashing.

Thanks again!

I'm not great at hardware, but that graphics chip looks underpowered. We don't recommend integrated graphics for Sims 2, especially with the later EPs. Here's a FAQ which will explain the problem and suggest things that you can do to try to minimize the damage to your computer:
http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Onboard_Graphics

Note that the damage that you do is cumulative; you may just be finally seeing the effects of playing the game on an underpowered machine.

Your processor temperatures appear to be under the maximum of 100 Celsius, so that's probably not your problem.

I don't doubt that it's my chipset. I suppose I can look into getting a brand-new one installed on my laptop. Meanwhile, I'm obviously going to have to pare down the CC in my game (ohNOES!!!) and follow the other tips in that page you were kind enough to point me towards.

Well, thank you for your help, Mootilda...and for the many items you created that I know I downloaded from MTS.

If you are thinking of upgrading your laptop, be sure to visit our Computer & Software Technical Support forum. People there will be able to help you determine which upgrades (if any) will solve your problems.
