I always use Eastern European names or obscure names from history.
Lately I am using:
Girls: Katrina, Alexandria, Nika, Kathrine
Guys: Olaf, Wilhelm, Alexei, Sasha, Viktor, Nikolai and Pavel
for some reason I love the names Siddhartha and Kamalla too

I used to only really use very traditional English names, but I used them so many times on the sims 2 it became almost comical! I now use parts of Latin plant names from a large plant encyclopedia because there's hundreds to go round!
Cynara, Althea, Zinnia, Lewisia, Molinia, Mentha, Cardamine and Aurea for girls and Acanthus, ilex, Galanthus, Astillbe, Anthemis, Eremurus and Galium for boys. :)

Generally it's just what pops into my head. Though I do have a particular family I save my ridiculous names for, so I've had a Disco Queen, a Tropicana and a Punishment xD

I usually go old testament all over it. Those tons of genealogies have some incredible sounding names.
Or I like to use random naming conventions.
For instance, my current sims are Pazuzu and Azazel Zanatas. Pazuzu and Azazel are regarded by some as demons and Zanatas is Satanaz backwards, and Satanaz is, well, Satan. So it's a little demonic family of my own.

I like the name's of your demonic family members. Lot's of z's.
Isn't Pazuzu the demon who possessed Regan in the Exorcist as well?

It depends, to be honest.
I do know that I love using themes: colors/gems (Amber, Ruby, Diamond, Bianca, Blu, etc), seasons/months (Summer, Autumn, May, August, January, etc), outdoorsy names (Brooke, River, Forrest, Hunter, Spring, Sky, Rain, etc), places (London, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Dakota, Francisco, Paris, etc), surnames-as-first-names (Anderson, Jackson, Parker, Kennedy, Kerrigan, McKinley, etc), Greek names (Ariadne, Antigone, Calliope, Persephone, etc) - it depends on my mood or the direction I'd like my storylines to go.
For example, my current Sim of the moment is named Beacon Davenport. The backstory behind this is that Beacon's parents struggled with infertility for years before his mother (Theresa) finally became pregnant. (This didn't happen in game, by the way. He is a CAS Sim.) She viewed him as her "beacon of hope" and the light of her life. I know, it's beyond corny but, doing things like that helps me form attachment to my Sims.

I never have two sims with the same name at least not if they matter. Game filler sims get whatever name they roll. But I do have patterns like currently I'm only giving out greek names.

I tend to name mine after what I am reading or watching on tv -- for a while, all redheaded boys were Ichigo Kurosaki and Kyo Sohma :) (And they each had to have the hot-headed trait. :) )

I used to do first and middle names, but so far I've stuck to first names. Some sims have names based from real life people they are supposed to resemble, or the characters they portray. I named one girl Ariana after Ariana Grande, and I'm going to try to give her traits that remind of Ariana. I also noticed I have a lot of "A" names (Ariel, Alanna, Antonella, Ariana...) Sometimes I have a name in mind, other times I don't, like when I had triplets, I knew I wanted a daughter Katara, but they thought of Emily and Zoey last minute. I haven't named any boys yet, but I've cosidered Sebastian, which seems very popular in my towns.

I mainly use names of characters in games, manga, or anime. my current household is filled with sims that have names from the legend of zelda.
Like Hairia and Nayru... I prefer to use the Japanese spelling ^w^

After years and years of naming sims, I'm always looking for new ones :P I pay attention to names on tv, in movies, in the credits, in books, street names, names I hear around, etc etc etc... The only thing is, I try to remember them all without writing any down, and of course that doesn't work ^___^
So I usually go with something I can find around my room, most often a song that's playing.. or use a random name generator until I get something I like ;P
