Hello Everyone!
As the title says, what weird names do they have? And if you want: how do they look?
I have a Charles Ku in my neighborhood, is her related to Peni's Beverly Ku somehow?
And another teen tourist Elizabeth Ng, she has the face template of Demi Love, the officer. I have a waiter called Knut GilsCarbo. Seriously, what is it with this family and their weird names?
So, do you also think that they are related to someone else's townies?

I believe the game has a list of available personal and surnames, most or all of them derived from Maxi's/EA's staff, which are distributed randomly when a generated character needs a name. Gilscarbo and Ku are both names on this list. So Charles and Beverly would be distantly related through the Ku who worked at the company. :)
You can replace this list with a custom one that suits your taste better, either downloading one (a couple are available through this site, I believe) or learning how they're set up and making your own, just like any other custom content. But if you have notownieregen you won't be getting new townies except for the ones you make yourself, anyway.
I've recently started seeing a new townie, despite having notownieregen, whose name is Betty Murphy. I think she must be a business reporter, generated when I installed OFB, because I've only seen her on the owned community lot. She's certainly not a normal townie, as I can't gussy her up with Chrisitan Love's hack; which is a shame, because she's wearing a classy sweater, orange track pants, and heels, and desperately needs it. I may put a clothesrack in my night club, just so I can suggest a new outfit to her and get her dressed in less painfully bad taste.

I've seen a townie with my own first name as well as one named Ocean McClellan...oddly enough. Ng seems to be becoming a more common name (although what kind of name /is/ that anyway? How do you pronounce it?) I've notised there are two Ivy Copurs, which is...interesting. However, I plan on getting notownieregen so these weird names will probably not take hold in my neighborhood (as soon as I can find the darn thing!)

I believe Ng is southeast Asian. The Malaysian student I knew in college taught me to pronounce that as a dipthong, very roughly, by forcing air through my nose while making the mouth shape for G and not quite voicing it. I wind up with something more or less like the French terminal N. He may, of course, have been amusing himself at the expense of the earnest young liberal.
The two Ivy Copurs are Pleasantville townies. Ocean must've worked on both teams, Sims1 and Sims2, because I had Ocean as a townie name in my Sims1 game.
My favorite townie name is of course Master Vampire Count Ralph.

Well, in my town, the two Ivy's are mother and daughter, yeah, I know its weird, but didn't anyone of you watched the episode of Gilmore Girls, where Rory explains her weird name, its actual the same as her mother, since her mother thought "How come men get to name their sons' after them while us woman can't name our daughters after us?", something like that... So I thought that would be a perfect storyline for both of them.

While not as funny as the others, a friend had a grouchy, fight-picking townie spawn in her game with the last name of "Love." We both love Edith Love, so much so that I asked her to clone her so she could be awesome in my game as well.

I'm on a new run of Helens. Three of them are new townie teens, one is a diva, one is a bartender and another is a vampire. It may be a glitch or it may be one of those statistically improbable -- but not impossible -- and therefore common, things.

I had a Lacey Leelaporn. She was a dormie who wormed her way into being playable by conveniently sitting next to my playable while she noticed her ex fiancé had already moved on, and became one of the characters best friends.
Currently, I also have a Douglas Fuchs, Caryl Fuchs, Prof. Zeeshan Leelaporn, and Prof. Justin Leelaporn.

Abhijeet. And Allyn.
Okay, my last rebuild-and-generate-new-townies wasn't all that recently, but I swear every third townie is now named either Abhijeet or Allyn. I had a family adopt a kid recently, and she was an Allyn too.

A police officer showed up to shut down a party in my Strangetown...and his last name was Mace! Cracked me up, and I tried to get the ugly almost-adult adopted daughter to chat with him, but he left before she could. Pity, I would have liked to marry her off to Officer Mace... His first name was something normal, so it didn't stick in my mind.
Also, there are two Vicki Horowitzs (or whatever that name is...I tend to forget the almost-normal names, except for Tellerman, which I think is cute) in this same Strangetown. One is an obnoxious little townie girl with long blond hair and a red dress, the other is a short-haired nanny. And guess what? Circe Beaker's son with her townie lover (Loki died of either flu, the mysterious illness, or a combination of both) knows both of them! The nanny is his nanny, and he had some kind of argument with the girl when he was lonely, Circe was busy, and she was walking by. It freaked me out when I hovered over them in his relationship panel and saw they had the same name...I thought it was some horrible glitch for about three seconds, before I remembered that that can happen...
EDIT: I checked when I played last night, and the name is Vicki Hourvitz! Ok, what kind of last name is that?

I didn't realise Leelaporn was elusive! There's about three different Leelaporns running round my 'hood at the moment, including Marsha Leelaporn who is rather posh looking.
I've also got a Houston McCarthy, which just sounds like a fantastic name!
I installed the notownieregen hack a while ago, but after I installed most (if not all) of the EPs. I've been noticing quite a few "new" names recently, but I've checked the number of character files and it's only grown in line with the new births, so I assume that the game cycles through a batch at a time.

I've noticed besides the names that come with the game (or with a name template hack) sometimes the game will give new townies names (both 1st and family - though not likely both at once) that you've used for your own sims - even in other neighborhoods.

If you have SimPE, and want to have some fun, or at least I call it fun! Spend sometime re naming the townies. Sure, you miss out the intital random generator, which can give you funny names, but at least you can control how many Marylena Hamilton's you have in your game. By doing this, I have very few duplicate first and last names. For instance I now have for uni cafeteria cooks named Cookie, and Snookie. I left Goopy and Komei alone, but I changed Kennedy Cox to Barney Cox, the name is too nice, for a guy like him. I may go back and change the two Ivy Copours? I changed one of the AL townies to Dick, because he's always kicking my trash can over, no matter where I put it. Good times can be had if you want to play around!

Well, names have a tendency to cross gender lines anyway.
Like how Ashley is originally a guy's name, but in the late 20th century, it became a popular girl's name. Hence why Ashley Pitts is named as such.
Also, Shannon has no indication on what gender it is, besides the fact that it uses a 'sh' sound, which I notice most English speaking cultures attribute to a more feminine sound. The whole kiki-bouba thing.

I just got a Chinese food delivery person called Armando Player! I wonder if he's a Romance!
I would love him to be made romantic on purpose. Sadly, not even the pricipal characters have been fully developed. The others are just random with no life in them. The Pleasantview townies and downtownies are immediately recognizable because of their name and look respectively, and everyone should be like that.
I had one male Leelaporn, and luckily he had the bit silly ('african') face and a shabby red sweater. So the name fit him well. He lived in Bluewater, which was a miserable low class neighborhood. The black male downtownie with red sloppy sportswear was named Fuchs in my game. I renamed him promptly, because he was handsome and downtown should be respectable, for the sake of fighting randomness.
The Diva was called Caryl Vu. I think she deserved a longer name being the Diva, but as a compromise the "Vu" name got wiped from the rest of the hood, and Caryl Vu had a reason to poke and throw drink at anyone who bore her name without authorization. Mr. Big was called David Gregory, which was unique and alright.
I felt very confused revisit another instance of downtown afer a while. Is it possible to disable the name randomizer, and leave the Tricou teens as "Teens", the blonde teen as Rose Miller, etc? (which makes sense if you write her as a recent arrival from the countryside, the name is a spark for further story development.)
I don't envy the development team for having their names tarnished by idiots who kick over trash cans or poke a hundred times. If their name were to be used, the team member should have a say what their character would be. He could be a goofy Goopy if their owner chooses so for their avatar, but it shouldn't be decided by the almighty random number generator.
More "Policemen", "Workers" and "Workmen" could inhabit the neighborhood if imagination runs short. They would then represent more people than there actually are.

Meh. If anyone on the development team were that thin-skinned, I imagine they'd have declined to allow their names to be used in the first place.
Rumor has it that Rod Humble IS thin-skinned, and insisted that his sim be coded such that it would be nearly impossible to mess with him. What a putz.

And of course he'd have to pick a nice looking Sim, or someone did. They give us a 'gorilla' face template, and I can't think of any of the default neighbourhood townies that are named after EA staff whom have it. Male or female.

"Goopy" is likely a nickname.
I agree, but Goopy in the game was either loved or hated in the beginning. And so I'm gathering he loved the attention his name brought, plus the clothing. I'm also guessing he had a since of humour. The parents thing I was just joking about. :D
But, I did wonder who he was, and how much of his personality was incorporated into the character. Or perhaps it was really a random selection. My guess though, Goopy, was not a random name, given to a random character.
That whole Maxis team worked together for a long time, they must of added some inside jokes to the original Pleasantview/default townies at least. I'm not too familiar with other neighbourhoods. So, I can see how a random generator was used, based on some of the repetitive names being used.
j7n
3rd Oct 2012, 01:31 PM
Didn't Benjamin Long have the pinocchio nose? That face looks fine in the female version, but the male is too sharp and bony. No, I don't know what a Cutie is.
I think the team had decided to go fully random after downtown, or at some point during its development. Because the default townies have persistent names, some but not all of the downtownies initially had good names, such as Rose Miller (I do remeber her because the name connected to the appearance), and in the expansion inbetween the two – University – they had added commentary under each character name for translators, so that they could replace it with a suitable and meaningful name.
It can't be denied that downtownies were tweaked by hand and incorporate something, which is left for the player to speculate about and discover.
Rose Miller has since combined her random and actual name and is known as Jasmyn Rose Miller-King. :)
I seem to recall Rod Humble defending putting the player in the (imaginary) "driver's seat" and letting them do whatever they want and then just sit back and "see what happens" (no longer driving apparently). But maybe I was mistaken, and that was another person. Once I put Rod Humble on top of my house on the roof. He fell a little but couldn't escape and I think wasn't even removed. Now I do have an urge to copy his gorilla outfit onto another person. :p

A cutie is a cute person; it's a very old usage and I don't know of any refinements to it.
No one who creates anything for public consumption can control it once it's loose in the world. A book does not mean the same thing when you read it as it did when the author wrote it. Audiences are not passive; we need them to complete the work.

I'm not on facebook, so I don't know what he looks like, or much about him, aside being a high top animator. It doesn't matter though, his alter ego is legendary. For Goopy Rossi in the game just sounds like an average Sim- well not really, but Goopy GilsCarbo, is a Sim I believe may have worked on animations for 'Blue Clue's', seeing I have had the privilage to see Goopy dance! Labrys Cheshire
I use HP's version (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=240267) of jordi's name mod, and I guess the seed for randomizing names got stuck when my Sim went to the paper to look for a roomie recently: two Sims named Labrys were spawned that day. Labrys Cheshire is a gorgeous gearhead with dark skin and nearly white hair. The other Labrys (last name unremembered) is a light-skinned redhead...also gorgeous, as are all my townies, since I use a mix of ridiculously lovely default face templates. I'm kind of hoping one of them will be able to marry into the playables, but female Sims brutally outnumber males at all age levels in Prosperity (baby thru teen, 51 girls v. 29 boys...it's like anti-China in my game), so there's little need to bring in the female townies.

It rhymes with "pukes." The guidance counselor at my Jr High school had that name and made a point of it the first day.

I got one named Daryl Gates. Ironically, he's a black man (for those who don't remember, Daryl Gates was white, and chief of the LAPD at the time of the Rodney King beating and LA riots - a time when there was rampant racism in the department.)
He wasn't in the Law Enforcement career - I think he was a dancer but I changed him to business (he got Senior manager) and is going to end up married to one of my female sims.

Ng is Vietnamese. But the Vietnamese name may be spread across Southeast Asia due to migration.

I don't know about recent gens. One of my teens came home with a friend named Kerie something. Oddly enough, it seems like the first townie friend anyone brings home from school is a girl with the Maxis dreads.
There are two Ivy Copurs in my town. o.o One's a teen and I think the other's an adult. They're not clones or anything, they look like two different people. I'm not sure if they know each other.

I believe your correction is incorrect. Ng is a Chinese surname. The Vietnamese equivalent is Ngo.

We've all got the two Ivy Copurs, at least in the default game. There are also at least two (maybe three? I'm not sure) Marylena Hamiltons, too. I don't think it was intentional, but rather the game randomly putting the same first and last names together more than once during the generation of the townies that ended up in the shipped game.

It's actually Cantonese. Cantonese and Mandarin are both considered Chinese, but people who speak Cantonese do not understand people who speak Mandarin or vice versa. It is possible to have ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam. The term "Chinese" is too broad to refer to a single monolithic language. There are actually many Chinese dialects, most of which are mutually unintelligible. The Han Chinese is the dominant ethnic group of China, and it speaks Mandarin as the single, unifying language. Otherwise, you get people who don't understand each other.

Yes, Cantonese is more specific, but that doesn't mean it's not "Chinese". Not all Chinese is Cantonese, but Cantonese is Chinese, and definitely not Vietnamese. ;)

definitely not Vietnamese. ;)
Classification can become quite confusing, once you talk about ethnic Chinese individuals who have claimed their citizenship in Vietnam. Then, they would be considered Vietnamese legally but Chinese ethnically, and confusion comes into play, thereby thinking the name "Ng" as a Vietnamese name. The thing with Chinese culture is that it has a tremendous influence over their surrounding Asian cultures. Confucianism is powerful force in the East as much as Christianity is powerful in the West.

An Alia the cat showed up, as the cat Debbie Goodie bought herself. In and of itself, there's nothing strange about a cat called Alia. Except that it just so happens to be the short form of one of my other internet psuedonyms... ...and Debbie (and Alia) currently live at the house of my sole remaining town founder. The four founders of SimHampton were modelled on me and three of my friends (the surviving founder is modelled on a friend).

A Trevor Schifel just generated himself. I first knew about it when I was asked what sort of elephant he should paint. Bit difficult to decide since I'd never heard of that Sim before. He turned out to be a teen with a big mohawk Rashida-Labana Logarint brought home from school. He Schifelled away from the house at about midnight and hasn't been seen since.

Last night Hamilton Beech decided to grill hot dogs for breakfast and caught the grill on fire, and I learned that the new firefighter at the Widespot fire department is Betty White ( http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/celebrity-news/nonagenarian-betty-white-named-americas-most-appealing-celebrity/article10982312/) .

What sort of elephant he should paint?
Sorry I didn't spot this earlier. The first I knew Mr Trevor Schifel existed was when I got given a hobby chance card for him. The card was set in a classroom and asked whether this guy should paint a realistic or abstract elephant for the teacher. Um, maybe my computer should have been asked that one, since it generated him without asking me?!?
(For the record, I clicked "Abstract" and that turned out to be the positive answer, gaining Trevor some art hobby enthusiasm. Still no idea why I was supposed to care. And now, I still haven't seen the Schifel Sim since).

A quick peek in SimPE shows that I apparently have a child townie named Pong King. I'll bet he's unpopular.

It is cool how names you use end up in the pool for future townies in any hood. Sometimes first names becoming last and vice versa. I gave sims dirty words as names at one time and it came back. As to earlier when I mentioned a guidance counselor when I was in 7th & 8th grade (1986-1988) with the name when someone asked how you pronounce "Fuchs" - I forgot she was actually a "college coach" rather than a guidance counselor - as she was in today's local newspaper - she's still at it 25+ years later. But now she does it for the nearby city of Reading Olivet Boys & Girls club rather than in a rural school district:

When you get a good look at his face and personality you'll probably know exactly how you want him.
