Used games! Are they doable?

What with EA deciding to be butts and requiring every new copy be registered and passworded and all that bizarre stuff, is it even possible to use a used disc? I'm wanting to save some money but all these expansion packs are tempting, and I need to know if I can go the pre-owned route at all. I imagine I'd need some manner of workaround, but if it's at all possible I'd rather give that a go.

You can still play the game, but if you want to register it on your Sims 3 Community / EA account, you'll need a new code (unless the previous owner didn't register it). If the code has already been used and you want to access the Sims 3 Community, you'll have to jump through some hoops (http://www.technologytell.com/gaming/48346/ea-discouraging-used-sims-3-game-sales-with-registration/)--request a digital copy of the manual for 10 USD.
