View Full Version : Game crash randomly... literally randomly...

AndarielHalo
15th Jun 2007, 11:15 PM
This started yesterday after adding about 350 packages to my downloads folder. The game crashed with the typical "The application has encountered an error. This application will now close" error. I tried removing the 350 I had added that day, and it still gave me the error. I then tried removing ALL downloads and it STILL gave me this issue. I removed all the neighborhood data and it finally worked.

I then added the downloads back in with the neighborhood and it crashed. I removed all the downloads, and left the neighborhood and it worked.

After some serious working, I managed to get it working with all downloads but without the neighborhood, and I then tried removing specific packages from my 350 on 6/14, and it still crashed. I reinstalled the entire game, and put the entire downloads back in... and it still crashed. I then placed in all up until 6/13, and it worked. I then carefully added the files from 6/14 of the 350, and it kept working. I only kept about 270 to 300 of the original files, and it worked.

Now today, it crashed when I added some new files today! I tried removing those new files, and it STILL crashed! I'm not going through this BS again, what is wrong with the game?!

In case it makes a difference, I include my latest log file from the crash:

mine too, it hasn't since I got my new video card though. What video card are you using? I dunno if that really has anything to do with it though. When mine crashed though, I woudn't even get a log, it'd just shut down.

Please everyone go through the entire article Canoodle linked ya'll to step by step or until you reach a resolution to your problem and do not hijack this thread.

Adding a comment of "I have this problem too" isn't helpful and clutters up the thread making it difficult to navigate so please keep your comments confined to helpful suggestions. :)

Please let us know if you have any questions along the way.

This FAQ is exactly what I've done and described in my first post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canoodle
16th Jun 2007, 11:26 PM
Well, not exactly. :) Did you try the 50% method that is in the tutorial? That will narrow down which files are actually crashing your game. Read through it again. When you removed the Downloads folder, and the crashing stopped...this is the next step:
http://www.sims2wiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content

If you had systematically followed the tutorial, it would have lead you to that page. Try the tutorial again. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, I DID try the "50%" method. STILL it did so. It's not any specific files which seem to be crashing the game, it seems to simply be the EXISTANCE of files. I've tried it with 90% of my downloaded packages, I've tried it with NO packages, I've tried it with ALL packages, it simply crashes MOSt of the time, unless I've got no downloads and no neighborhood data.

Hmmm. This seems to be pointing to an issue with your neighborhood and the CC.
Let me see if I have this right:
-It works without the neighborhood with the DL folder installed.
-It doesn't work with the N'hood AND the DL folder installed.

When you reinstalled, did you copy your existing hoods back into the game? Is it just one N'hood or all hoods that crash with the DL's installed? Does it crash when entering the neighborhood, or upon running the game?

I'm hoping for your sake that it isn't a borked Neighborhood, because we all know what that means. :( I'm wondering if you have something installed (placed before you installed new content) in the hood that is conflicting with your new downloads.

Unfortunately, I cannot root out this problem for you (I wish I could). It's real drudgery mucking through those files and I certainly feel your pain.

-It works without the neighborhood with the DL folder installed.
-It doesn't work with the N'hood AND the DL folder installed.
-It sometimes works with the N'hood and without the DL folder
-It sometimes works without the N'hood and with the DL
-It sometimes works with both the N'hood and the DL folder

That's my situation, basically.

About the only thing I did differently which I thought had something to do with it was I installed the latest version of SimPE and toyed around with it, exported one of my Sims, but didn't change anything else. This was before I reinstalled everything

Try reading all the logs and exception txt files in the sims "Logs" folder. There is a separate error file for everything in there. Most are blank, look for the files that have more than a "zero" file size. It will give you an idea what type of problem is crashing it. From there someone here on this site or on the Maxis site may be able to tell you what to look for.

System memory: 512 Megabytes total, 52 Megabytes free.

Theres your problem! 52MB Free ram when it crashes! I have 1GB ram, and it still crashes, but not nearly as much, Get more RAM. That fixed mine, it'll probably fix yours.

Are you sure it's just that? Seems kind of a menial reason

Obviously, you don't know how much memory this game hogs because of the crappy engine. 512MB is the bare minimum, and while it's great for just the base game, it won't cut it if you have the EPs/SPs. Even at a Gig, mine crashes constantly (which means that more than a Gig of RAM is probably what you need, too).

XP needs at least...ah, I think it was around 300MB of RAM to run, and if you're gaming, you're taking memory away from Windows that it needs to be stable. Of course it's going to crash.

I dunno. At my AZ home I ran all the EP's on a 3Ghz computer, integrated Intel chipset and 512 RAM. I'd play for up to 7 hours straight. Never crashed once. Then again, I am super picky about what I put in my downloads folder and never abused the machine by stuffing Gigs of content into it and then trying to run it with 512 RAM.

I have since upgraded the RAM, (I was sick of the slowness) but haven't touched the rest of the computer yet. Basically, I need to scrap the whole machine as the motherboard is awful.
