Firstly this is my first ever contest, so expect mistakes.

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj275/bolt660/styleandculturenewww.jpg

Hello and Welcome to Style and Culture. A building contest, where you will need to stick to a certain theme for each round. We will be building houses from 5 different cultures. Each of these cultures have there own authentic style, and It is up to you to represent these styles in each round. I will give you some certain things which I am looking for from each culture, but the rest is up to you. Some Round information is set out at the bottom of this post, but more detailed criteria will be posted after the previous round has ended.

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj275/bolt660/rules.jpg

1)There will be No Eliminations in this contest, so you get chance to show off your skills in all of the cultures, some of which may be a stonger area for you than others.

2) Custom Content is allowed. Although I'm sure it would be possible to represent cultures with maxis content, feel free to use some CC to help you if you wish.

3) Houses should be fully furnished and landscaped. We are looking for the complete package here.

4) Photo requirements will be posted each round, but make sure you make your pictures no bigger than 650x550. You can add borders to your photos, but please no other photoshopping.

5) There is no budget in any round, so splash the cash!

6) Your house must be playable, although Judges cannot play test your house, if they spot something which could mean that it is not playable then you could lose points in that section.

6) Have fun, PM me with any issues, and try to be punctual with deadlines. I will allow a few hours for extenions If You have PM'd me first.

Application Round:

Your first task, is to build a lot based on a spanish theme. The Lot can be any size, and can be any type of home,(cottage, villa, apartment, dorm, community lot,e.c.t)

Both the Exterior and Interior should be complete, and there should be an underlying influence of spanish decor in your design.

Spanish Style
Spanish style home decorating is rustic but also a colourful look in your home.
The Spanish style is very interesting with vibrant colors and textures used within it
Often there are vibrant decorations on the walls, and the flooring is usually tiled or hardwood. When you choose to decorate your home with Spanish style home decorating you can bring the elements in without spending a lot of money. You can simply add photos of your family, bright colors and comfortable furniture to achive the perfect home.

Colors
When it comes to Spanish colors, you should think about using bright colors like red, yellow, orange, and blue. These colours are bold and will certainly stand out. Be sure to add a beige or white to the mix as well to give the colors a nice background.

For this round and any other round, you will be Judged on the following:

How well the house represents the particular culture. /5
Creativity /5
Appearance /5
Playability /5

Picture Requirements:

1 x Front view shot of the whole lot.
3 x Favourite parts of your lot which show the Required elements.
1 x Overview shot of the lot

Deadline:SUNDAY 7TH June 11:00PM BST (see clock :D) Please note that round 1 entries are due on this day too.

Time in London, Uk (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fullscreen.html?n=136)

(Depending on how many contestants There are by then app's could be open through round 1 aswell.)

Well, I was about ready to delete my contest hood after another week, and just stick to my themed hood, and stop doing contest, mainly since I figured there'd be no more (cuz of sims 3). But, I have a soft side for building contests, so, I shall be back sometime with that application. :) Great sounding contest btw.

hehe, An Emergency Judge, is called in if one of the actual Judges takes too long to provide me with scores. Normally it would be if a Judge has not contacted me within 24 hours, I would then message the E.J's to provide me with scores.

Basically they are like backup judges, but should also be promt and be available if needed.

Hope that clears up your question :P

are you still ok with being a Judge?

I'm Ok with being aj udge. Recently my mum has been taking me out the house for clothes (huh) but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to judge every round. Just to clarify I pm (?) you my verdict (can't think how else to describe it). Sorry I'm new to judging.

hehe don't worry. Basically, when each round ends I will send all the Judges a PM telling you what to Judge. The Application round doesn't end till Monday, so expect a Private message sometime after then :)

What you will be submitting will be a set of scores for each contestant, along with some comments if you wish.

Judging will be scored on the following:

How well the house represents the particular culture. /5
Creativity /5
Appearance /5
Playability /5

Hope that clears up your question lewjen.

Thought the above info might be useful to contestants/Judges alike, so posted it all here. It is all in the original post too though.

Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

I have a sudjestion for free choice:

You could have that as the bonus and you get points for the reasons you chose that culture. And you get more points if you go for a harder culture to incorperate into a lot.

Great suggestion lewjen :) The only thing would be, determining which cultures require more effort to convey. It's a tricky subject really and we don't want to perceive cultures in different lights which may offend people. I would say that *no* culture is specifically harder than any other, and that they all have area's which make them unique.

Your first idea, of having bonus points for reasoning's behind chosen cultures, and the ways they displayed them sounds good though, I will definatly consider this for the final round... providing we get that far of course ;)

Ok :) Thank's for showing an interest Clw8 :D

Here is what I have decided to do:

As the Original Application deadline was Monday, and I think it is near enough impossible to get 10 contestants before then, I will be accepting applications all through Round One. This means that the new Application deadline is Sunday 7th June - Where both Applications and Round 1's need to be submitted. (I will update the main post now)

Round one details will still be posted on Monday 1st as planned.

I will try and make it so round 1 is not too time constraining, so that people have a chance to hopefully get both app and Round 1 done by the 7th.

I really hope this gives people a chance to Join, and I really look forwards to seeing any entries that may appear :D

Thanks guys

I'm a MTS contest virgin, lets see if we can change that. eh.
This one has absolutely no custom content. 100% pure EA and there was no fiddling with the boolprops or such nonsense so you can be sure it's 100% playable.
2 bed, 1.5 bath, entry hall, grand hall, kitchen/dining room, living room, sun room, balcony and deck, reading nook, pool, trellis portico.
Floors are tile with lots of ethnic rugs strewn about, white stucco on the outside, light terra cotta stucco on the inside. Lots of primary colors, red chaise lounges, blue kitchen stuff, green living room furniture. Upstairs is more muted with purple bedding and distressed green dressers.

Hey teardrops182 :) So pleased your Joining! :giggler:

I would have to say no to including more pictures sorry however I certainly wouldn't object to you linking the extra pictures that you couldnt decide on. So like have your 3 extra shots, then put links to the others so Judges can click on them to see them :P

Hope that's ok

Here it is! Woohoo!

A beautiful spanish retreat nestled in a thick forest of palm trees. One bedroom with a balcony overlooking the pool and a large ensuite bathroom upstairs, and the main room (which consists of an entry space, kitchen and dining room), a small toilet with a shower and a pretty two-floor sitting room downstairs. An enclosed porch with terracotta archways and wooden blinds is perfect for sunny days. To the right of the house is a small vegetable patch.

I have chosen bright colours for accessories such as blankets, paintings and cushions, with clay sculptures, abit of cast-iron, and rugged wooden furniture for a worn in, comfortable feel which is still stylish. Moroccan and Mexican-inspired objects have been thrown in as well. There are plenty of plants in and out of the house which I feel adds a natural touch.

Though there is ALOT of CC and it all looks abit crowded, but I moved in a sim and tested it out and yep, it's actually completely playable (so far!)

Hope you guys like it.

Yes please Lewjen, I'm sure I confused you all with that message last night :p

Basically App's and round one will both end next sunday (7th) and If you could Judge both at the same time and send both sets of scores to me after the deadline on that day, that would be great :D - That is of course providing we get 10 Apps before then :) I will send you and the other Judges a PM a week today :P

For everyone: I will be posting Round one tommorow (Monday) and that will remain open till sunday 7th as well unless some people need an extension which I would try to allow.

In the mean time, I hope some more people will become inspired to post an app :p

my application
-spanish style-

Well, I decided to take a standard US home, and put a spanish type twist on it, kinda. Sort of like a makeover if you will. To give this house more of a spanish appearence, I used golden colored stucco, orangey tiled roof, a flat, see-thru front awning which has mulitiple arches, I bricked a majority of the front, and used bright, cheerful colors thru-out.
http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/oo218/depposbournefan/ScreenHunter_01May311530.jpg
Of course, I guess that it still looks more Americanized than Spanish, but . . . I suppose it's the thought, right :)
This home has two bedrooms, four bathrooms, livingroom, formal dining room, kitchen, one car garage, and a fenced in patio / pool area. Not to mention the appealing landscaped yard, which has a short decor border fence around the perimeter, and plenty of yard space to play (swing already up).
http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/oo218/depposbournefan/ScreenHunter_03May311531.jpg
I really like the pool / patio area and the swing area. The space is quite appealing, and the privacy is a thumbs up in my book!
http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/oo218/depposbournefan/ScreenHunter_04May311531.jpg
The livingroom continues the theme of the entire house, and incorporates the same colors you'll find through out: yellows, greens, and tans. This is a shot of the study area of the room.
http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/oo218/depposbournefan/ScreenHunter_05May311532.jpg
Don't get too dressed up for this formal dining room! Though it is formal, it is still just as laid back as the rest of the home. With pops of color here and there, eating a meal in this room will surely bring your mood up!
http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/oo218/depposbournefan/ScreenHunter_06May311533.jpg
Well, I hope that you liked my sorta more american home. I try - I try :)

Thanks....
I hope that now since school is like over, (well officially wednesday, but i"m finished going for the year, lol), That I'll have time to better research the styles you choose for the rounds....I think with more time and effort, I could've done better. But, this whole previous week has been stressful, (for lots of ppl apparently), so that would possibly influence my entry :) Can't wait till the First Round starts.

Oh, and the person who posted before me: teardrops, WOW is all I can say about your home. I wish I had all your CC and your skills in decor and landscaping! Everyone has done good so far, and I hope that you get your 6 remaining contestants simsimsims. It seems that with the switch of sites, the contest area has fallen into the darkened corner. I think that if we were still over at s2c, that you'd have oodles of contestants already.

I agree with that statement completely. I think a lot of the people who were very active on the community have gone elsewhere since this merge thing went down because normally the contests would be filling up. Doesnt give me much hope for the 2nd Cycle of Architect Community! Come on people and join! :)

For This round you will be building a small (2x2 lot) Traditional chinese home.
The home can be either 1 story or 2 stories tall, and must only feature the following rooms as the owner of this property lives alone.

Hallway(s)
1xkitchen/diner
1xliving room
1x Bathroom
1xBedroom
1x Garden/patio area

Because of time contraints, You do not have to furnish every room in the house, however at least 2 of the above rooms should be fully furnished and decorated, the landscaping and garden/patio however have to be complete. Judges will not penalise you for not furnishing every room, as long as you have 2 internal rooms done then thats fine.

Remember to really focus on getting as many chinese style features into your home as possible.

Chinese Style:
Rough Example (http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj275/bolt660/chinesehome.jpg)

China certainly has a very unique style to their homes. The decorations in the house are usually very bright, and crammed in. With big lanterns, and subtle lighting, chinese homes, are cosy, warm and very stylish.
Your home should take this into account, and there should not be too much space around.

Colors
The Predominant colour in china is Red. From lanterns to pillars, you will see plenty of red, and sparkly things.
Another popular colour is Yellow/Gold. It's really no coincidence that the Chinese flag is red and features five yellow stars.
As well as these popular colours, blacks and whites are frequently used, as with the "ying yang" symbol.

Judging:

How well the house represents the particular culture /5
Creativity /5
Appearance /5
Playability /5

Picture Requirements:

1 x Front view shot of the whole lot.
3 x Shots which show your lot to it's full potential.
1 x Overview shot of the lot

Deadline: Would have ended Sunday 7th June 11:00PM BST, but if there are late applicants this week, I will be extending this. (see clock :D)
The deadline for Round one can be extended if people need extra time.

Round 1 sounds great! My daggon' printer ran outa ink, so I had to just write all the info above... lol. I always like to have a hard copy lying in front of me. Anywho, I'm off to download chinese things, b/c I really want to excell in this round. :) Oh, and is it ok to make collages, so that we can fit more than one room/feature in each picture?

:P sorry you had to write it all out clw8, I prefer having hard copies of Round Info's too when I enter contests, since I dont like playing in window mode.

Collages are fine  I think they are a perfect way of getting lots of features across effectively.

I think the contest section is suffering as a result of Sims 3 and also the merge of the sites. :p None of the current contests have 10 contestants yet, and have all been up for over a week :( still 5 days is quite a long time and we might get lucky.. :p

yes, I agree with you simsimsims....I think that a majority of the people who used to join contests, are now off playing ts3. I, however, didn't like the ideal of sims 3, so as long as there's a contest a running here, I will 99% of the time join! (And I can't wait for the ones in the waiting list to get approved... hope they do) And I do hopee, once again, that people will please join this one! They don't have to do the whole contest, but it's more fun if everyone does... :)

Casa Estrella belongs to the very famous flamencosinger Senora Dolores Fernandes and her family, and is located in the Andalucía region, not far from beautiful Marbella. Dolores grandmother was of gypsy blood, and her home has some elements from this rich culture, as well as elements from Northern Africa and the great Spanish tradition.

Thank you! I for sure had a lot of fun making it, and will soon start on the Chinese house :P , but would it be possible to have an extension until monday morning? I will be very busy at work today and tomorrow, so I will have to do it all on Sunday, so I might need the whole night to finish it, even if it will be a smaller lot :D

Yes that would be fine :p

I think I will need to extend round 1 longer than that, if people join today, tommorow or even sunday, they would need sufficient time to complete a round 1 :p I will see how many contestants we have by the end of sunday, and if there is enough then I will certainly extend Round 1 for everyone

Well, only about 27 hours left to accumilate some more apps, or the contest will have to close down :( which would be a real shame as you have all worked so hard.

Hopefully a rush of people will see the light and feel their Inner spanish aching to get out.

Oh yes that would be a real petty :( I for one think that this contest is so interesting, so I really hope we will be able to continue. :p
But I guess everybody is trying figure out their new Sims 3 these days...
But simsimsims, it says nothing in the rules that this has to be entirely for Sims 2 houses, does it? So maybe folks can compete with Sims 3 houses as well???

That would have been a really good idea :P But Someone already asked me if they could Use Sims 3 content in the contest last week. I PM'd Beeps and she said that it wasn't allowed :(

Hi simsimsims,

I'd say no to allowing Sims 3 stuff in your (or any current) contest. Contests that are geared towards Sims 3 should be submitted as Sims 3 contests

Which is a shame really as I think the "sims 2" contest section will loose a lot of people. I think Sims 3 contests have to be submitted in a different section.
Personally I have both Sims 2 and Sims 3 and will actively play both, I perhaps even still prefer Sims 2 really due to all the extra content.

About 24 hours left now before this contest sinks into the dark pits of the Sims 2 contest graveyard. That is unless We get a sudden spurt of Apps. :P

I think if I ever did a contest again, I would do a beauty one, as building ones seem to suffer a bit :p

Thanks to some unexpected free time, I'm able to post earlier than expected! Even if it would seem that the contest will not be able to continue, I had a lot of fun building, so that's okay! But I still hope that 5 people out there will join (if YOU do, we need only 4...), so that we can continue with the Greek style - my favourite! :lovestruc

Anyway, this is my Round 1 entry, that I found quite challenging! I many times wanted to add an item, only to find out it was Japanese/Vietnamese/Malaysian/etc, so I'm kind of shocked how little I actually knew about this huge and important culture! To anybody Chinese seeing this: please don't take it the wrong way - I'm a newbie :D

Miss Lihn My Chan is a modern Chinese woman, an architect and young, free and single! She loves to travel, especially to Tibet and Korea, and has brought home a few items from her journeys that she is very proud of. When she bought the old courtyard-house it was a challenge to rebuild it too a tip top modern house, with all the facilities that a person would want in 2009. She does not beleive in Feng Shui, well not totally anyway, but she does believe that antique furniture goes very well with modern design!

I really hope that you will host the same contest at a later point Simsimsims, maybe in the Sims 3 section?? I really believe there is an interest for this kind of competition, but that we were a bit unlucky, due to the release date of the new game.
Thanks to everybody - I had fun anyway!

Gosh Simsimsims, I am SO sorry that your contest didnt draw enough people. I thought it was a wonderful idea for a contest. I hope you consider resubmitting it again. I agree with everyone, and believe this is a misfortune of timing between the merge of MTS2 & the Community, plus the release of Sims 3.

Perhaps given some time, a resubmission of this idea will draw more contestants. I know personally, even though I own Sims 3 and am dying to play it, my computer cannot handle the new game without a pricy upgrade which I currently cannot afford, so I will be sticking with the Sims 2 for a while to come! (And I'll bet I'm not the only one out there!) Again, so sorry and dont feel discouraged because I thought your idea was sound and you were doing a very good job at hosting/running it. :)

Yes, I agree with misstech, lol. Even if I actually wanted to buy ts3, my computer has a horrid video card and there is something else that it is lacking too, i can't remember. I have no idea how i'm running ts2 with 6 eps and 2 sps when my video card isn't even fit for base game, let alone all the expansions.... :) And I know I've heard lots of people talk about computers being not cut for ts3 yet.
