That's a really nice modern house, me2uou812!

Cute house, simtastic2. Don't you just love all the trees and bushes in TS3?

I made... a BOX! (gee beatdoc, your building skills have really gone to pot lately  )
http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp101/beatdoc16/Sunset%20Valley%20Sims/The-Box-House.jpg
My poor sim had just moved out and only had a measly $7000 to find a home. Hence she recieved the above box with no furniture except for a bed!

Penny - Beautiful pictures! I love the one with the pond and roses, the detail looks amazing!
me2uou812 - Love the open feel of your home, especially the with all the windows and open car space below.
simtastic2 - Cute house! Isn't it great how you can match all the windows and doors?

Penny- I love your landscape pictures- so pretty!

beatdoc- It may be a 'box', but it's a very cute box at that, and has your style stamped all over it.

@beatdoc16:
At least it is an attractive box. My first-time homeowner Sims should be so lucky.

beatdoc16, the landscaping is so bright! I love it!
pennysims, all of your pictures are great. I stalked your lj and the desktop background pics are my favorite :)

Sorry I have nothing to share, I'll have to fire up my game and get some shots :]

Pennysims, those shots are breathtaking! Wow. The light filtering through the cherry trees looks amazing.

beatdoc - You can make a box look adorable! And you are soooo awesome at landscaping. Wow.

Ingeborsk - That shot with the butterflies it beautiful!

Thanks for the lovely comments on the 'box' everyone! I wonder how many different ways a box could look?

Ingeborgsk - what a great landscaping shot, I love the butterflies and yellow flowers.
Gigi - That's one pretty awesome shack! For some reason I just love the back porch with the telescope.

I love that the landscaping plants no longer need tending! It's so aggravating to get your landscape all set up, only to find that because of the way you put it together, you sim would get all upset if they couldn't get close enough to water something or pull weeds.

Gardening is as it should be now, just the things you actually plant with your sim! :)

Here's a house I've been working on today:

I'm not very good with landscaping the yard. This one has a big empty yard for now, but I plan to work on it as I go along. Right now I want my couple to get moved in and playing. :)

Great houses! You guys make me want to become a better builder. :)

Starter homes are the biggest challenge for me. 16,000 is such a tiny, minuscule, practically non-exsistent amount! Actually I struggle with staying under budget in all aspects of life. ;)http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/5826/buildquanitstarter001.jpg (Pardon the plumbob)

I woke up with this house in my head. I live near a lot of houses like this so it's no wonder really. http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/6628/buildantebellum001.jpg (Apparently there's a bug that causes some of the shutters to not display, it's very annoying.)

14th Jun 2009, 07:16 PM
NicMicD, I thought that too in the beginning, but I later discovered that there is an option setting either under the video tab or the tab with the cogwheels, that says something about only showing detail on the active floor. After I cleared that checkbox, I was able to see furniture on all floors and shutters and stuff. (The two pics of mine above that don't have shutters were actually taken before I remembered to put some on! Lol!). When I play next I will try to remember to check out the exact name and location of these settings so I can update this post with that info here.

Thanks for posting that, momicajack :) I found it and now the shutters are all there.

15th Jun 2009, 03:55 AM
Cool! Yay! It makes the pictures look so much nicer when you can actually see stuff in the rooms! Lol! It was bugging me anyway that when I looked at a house I saw big empty rooms or people "sitting on air" and stuff like that! I'm glad I finally figured out the way to make that stop!

The more pictures I see the more I want this game and a new graphics card.

I don't think we'll need as much custem content as we did in the sims to have ok houses this time. The neighborhood view seems to be the key, in my opinion.

Daaaamn, I need a good graphics card :(

ps: declandabest, what's that dome I see in the background?

babolat85: Love it!

I love everyone's houses! Everyone's making some neat houses with the sims 3.

So I kinda cheated and took a premade lot and just renovated it til I gave up for a while. haha. I am definitely planning on going back and reworking somethings (i.e. the color of the brick, and the upstairs.).

I only posted the pictures of the downstairs because the upstairs and the basement are still in renovation.
:]

The house went from this rustic cabin:

To thise updated and slightly modern abode:

I don't have nearly the same building skills as everyone else here. I made a library, but it's not that great. ( All images were just slightly tweaked in photoshop by the way.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_StreetView.jpg
Outside the building.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_Lobby2.jpg
The lobby. (Yes, those are indoor trees. And why can't there be a way to recolor the ceiling?! I don't want an ugly gray roof. )

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_Conference_Room.jpg
A conference room upstairs.

And here's the rest of the images I took of the building.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_Lobby.jpg
Another lobby view.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_Kid_Zone.jpg
A "Kid Zone" with play pen, indoor playground (it's the large tower object, which isn't shown), chair with themed rugs for story time, bookcases low enough to be in reach of children, and careful attention to keep as much of the area as visible as possible so parents won't easily loose track of their kids. (I'm not a parent and I don't want kids, but even I can see this as a huge benefit to parents. :P )

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_Overall.jpg
The library overall. (It seemed out of place already with the bright colors. Almost seems like something between Art Deco and 80s styles.) Those ugly boxes on the roof are supposed to make it blend better with other buildings that have roof junk on them. I used trashcans as vents. :P Until there's good custom content out there, these things will just look too bland at a distance.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Library_Upstairs.jpg
Another view from upstairs which doesn't include much of what is there.

Things not pictured are:
The bathrooms (which are somewhat lacking. No good mirrors or dispensers or anything for public bathrooms).
The computer access room is not picture because it's a bit too bland for my tastes.
The upstairs study areas aren't shown either. They use those yellow half-wall things but they're too bright and I can't tone them down any to make it look better. :( Not even making the walls and floor a lighter yellowish color helped enough. I mean, they do blend more, but they're way too bright.
Finally, the "special collections"/Archives. It's not a pretty room. It's all grey colored with "high tech" lighting and the bookcases are plastic textured with those really bad metal/plastic colors of an off sea green, a yellowish color, a turquoise like color, and finally a salmon color. It's meant to represent the common use of those colors, even if they're terrible... At least it's realistic somewhat.

That said, the building is ugly. Blarg.

it is just me that its completely dissapointed because all the cool building stuff from the sims 2 (all the expansions-stuff packs) was not even considered for the sims 3? and i hate build.weird new tools like that green arrow that comes from a side of the wall to resize, etc. and if i use the move objects code with the windows they get jammed and the windows get stuck like if they could not go there. i need to re place them. honestly i will never play sims 3 again. but i must admit Shrewsbury333 that thats a really nice building there!

MondayMorning: That looks like it would be perfect as a beach side home. Also, the gazebo(? Interesting use of curtains at least) is very interesting. I may have to copy that some time. :P

O HAI GUISE WUTS GOIN ON LOL?!?!

So I just finished decorating the interior of a house for one of my sims. It's a crappy default Maxis made house, but that just makes it more prefect for him. I'd really like and advice you can give to make this fit him better. I gave some little info about him if that'll help.

They're all too big for MtS, so They're in links. Sorry.

Heres the basic shot (http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll72/Dengarde/KylesHouse.jpg)

Kyle, being a workaholic Investigative Journalist, isn't home very often. But he's forced out of work (A.K.A. Closing Time) He likes to be as comfy as possible. (Hell, the only reason he's wearing ANYTHING is for you guys :P )

Shot 2 (http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll72/Dengarde/KylesHouse2.jpg)

Whenever he EVER has time off, (Which is a nightmare for him), He passes the time by reading mystery novels. He always has the TV on, but he never watches it. He just has it on the News all the time is case something big happens. He also tosses the football around when he needs to think. His CD collection is to store all the jazz music he buys when he's working.

The gnome is a second place trophy for a contest held at the office for most stories covered in a month. He would have gotten first place, but that would mean a vacation. We just can't have that.

Shot 3 (http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll72/Dengarde/KylesHouse3.jpg)

In the rare case that he's not forced to be home, he's usually just typing up an article, or checking up on Baseball scores from ESPN. Alarm clock is there for when he falls asleep at the computer or couch.

Final Shot (http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll72/Dengarde/KylesHouse1.jpg)

He only ever cooks if it's first thing in the morning and he's just woken up. And usually then it's just PB&J. He has no stove, so there's no need to have an alarm there, but he insists that he once set Cereal on fire, so better safe then sorry.

So, based on those discriptions, any suggestions for his house when he rarely uses?

This is Maxine's home. Maxine is quite the rockstar/playboy/artiste. He's also a prolific painter, and his subjects are often his many lovers that pose for him.

His home is built as a gallery. These are all his works.

Mflux: That's a lot of paintings! Is it a public gallery? I've yet to make a true gallery or museum. I've got one I made, but I don't like how it looks. Seems bland to me. Anyway, just wondering if those will stay on a community lot.

Babolat85: Your houses always look so cozy and like a place I would love to live in.

_________________________________________________________________________

I don't know how successful I was, but I attempted to make a "maxis match" to the bistro.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Bistro_N_Somethin.jpg
I had no idea what to make the other building, so it's currently a museum to the life of people long ago. I'm not a fan of the columns, but at the time I felt they balanced out the weight of the tall buildings. I also tried to go with a slightly French and Italian blend to the objects I chose.

I also redesigned the central park to have a slightly more European flair...Slightly. I attempted to add in Roman design aesthetics and stick to more Mediterranean plant life.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/CentPark_Center.jpg

Here's the overview.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/CentPark_Overall.jpg

To the left, I wanted something similar to the depictions in impressionist paintings I have seen. (And a pointillism painting by Seurat.) Both a large waterfront for relaxation as well as a more "marsh" look to the upper half with the willows and other plants. There's also a less "Roman" (if I could call the rest of the park that) style bridge which is similar to the old one but changed so that there is water flowing under it.

To the right near the top there is area for picnics and meals. On the lower right there are bathrooms and benches hidden by quite a few trees.

Here's some other shots of the park.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Central_Park.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/CentPark_Fountain.jpg

As you can see, the major problem here will be sims using the pool used as an extension to the fountain. It wouldn't let me stick fencing around the pool, and I had a HUGE problem with trying to stick a pool in there in the first place. I tried to stick fencing down first and then the pool, which normally works, but again, pool issues. "Invisible barriers" kept me from extending the pool over completely empty patches of land... :wtf:

Thank you! I really appreciate the compliment. I'm glad someone like the changed appearance. And yes, that's the one. The lady also has a pet monkey.

Monkey's in the lower right.

If you go into neighborhood view, there's a button in the lower left corner with "...", and it will allow you to go into "edit Neighborhood" or something to that effect. When in that mode, you click the cursor button (if it isn't already in use, which it should be at first) and when you click on a lot an information bubble should come up. One of the buttons has the same build mode graphic on it. That will allow you to build public buildings. You can demolish lots as rebuild them from scratch, or just alter existing ones. I altered the existing park in mine.

So just a quick and easy guide below, here's a step by step guide.
1. Go into Neighborhood View
2. Click the "..." button in the lower left.
3. Go to "Edit neighborhood" or the equivalent.
4. With the "pointer" cursor in use, you can select lots and change things or go down to them to build on.

Extra Step 5. If the lot isn't public, there is a button with a "/" in the middle with a park bench on one side. You can switch a lot from public to private, and vice versa. :)

Edit:
Babolat85: Woah, compliments from a building master! (At least I consider you to be quite talented.) I feel so proud now. :D

I decided to play a single Sim in Sims3 to build up all his skills to max, and earn a living. Going to see if I can stay interested enough in accomplishing this task. Fiance on the side, of course.

With that, I decided to also build a house with a view, ground up. Initially I started with 4 walls, a bed, toilet, fridge, stove and some counter tops to make food, although I could have lived without the stove and relied just on `quick meals` to start.

From the get-go I wanted to have a room with a view. There was one house I saw uploaded to MTS that had a bathtub in a small room. I wanted to emphasize on that, sans the bathing in private for all to see, so decided that maybe I'll turn it into a study somehow.

Heres a few captures of what I've done so far. Mind you this house is STILL A WIP. (Pics are clickable and go to Flickr.com)

beatdoc16: Your houses look so lovely, if very small. That's not a bad thing either, as they look perfect for couples and single sims. Very beautiful.

agnes940: Your house looks just fine. I would maybe add a little more vegetation away from the house, but otherwise it looks great.

VoiceIHear: I would maybe delete out a little of the terrain changes around the edges to make it smoother in transition. Also, the tree/shrub around the garage seems to go into the garage... Not sure. Other than that, it looks like a nice modern home for the suburbs...maybe more upper middle class suburbs anyway.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's something I just did today.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/New_City_Hall.jpg

This is only a shell to go over the city hall. It was my attempt at changing how it looks.
The extra building add on parts cannot be entered. This is just changing the look of the existing rabbit hole.
Now that I look it, I don't see how the bricks turned purple...they are brownish toned. Also, I don't know french so this may be incorrect.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/CitHal_Overall.jpg
Here it is over all. I don't like how I didn't make it symmetrical...
Also, there's a lot of little oddities here and there.
...You can tell I didn't use any real architecture plans because of how disconnect everything feels. There's not a real pattern that stays around it...

Few random shots.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/CitHal_Entrance.jpg
Entrance. I don't know if sims can actually enter it since I haven't tested it yet, but I would think they 'should' be able to considering there is a gap between the doors and the entrance to city hall.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/CitHal_Side.jpg
Shot from the side of the entrance. I miss the colonnades from the old Sims 2.

And thanks for the pointers, not quite finished yet but should be soon. Again thanks..

And your lot is simply AMAZING!!
i really like it, i like it not symmetrical it gives it uniqueness? lol. and sometimes the best work is not done by plans and just from our minds :D .

Garek Maxwell: Your city hall is very grand. I don't think I would have the time, effort, or patients to build something like this. How long did it take to build?

Wow, all your houses look so amazing.
My Sims got a daughter and now need a new house, because they don't have enough room. But since all houses I build look bad and I don't want one of the pre-made houses, I just don't play the whole game anymore.

VoiceIHear: It's not that good, but thank you. I really think it could use more decorations and maybe some columns. Probably more windows would help too, but I didn't want it to be cluttered. Thank you for comments though! And yes, I rather enjoy not working from plans. I just get a few pictures and take some ideas from each. :)

vicarious70: Too long.
Actually, I think it took maybe 6 hours... Not sure. I kept fiddling with the wall textures and things. The hardest part was making it so the city hall wouldn't turn black since it was technically inside the building. I added some walls in the back to block the view of the city hall from the outside, then added windows to the regular wall that encases it. Since the added walls didn't seal off anything, the natural lighting came in and lightened the city hall from the inside out. That was probably the biggest pain, since my computer started lagging a lot at that point.

And actually it looks bigger then what is actually is.. its only 3 bedrooms =P.
P.S. Big fan of your magazine

Garek Maxwell: And i think it is that good. Very clever idea too. And 6 hours isn't much.. thats pretty damn fast really :D .

Now i have to go and start another house, much similar to the last one (hopefully with a greenhouse and a waterfall this time) its going to be smaller though. My deadline is by friday... we'll see if it turns out that way :D .

And i can't believe i've never had a look at this forum. It's cool to see what everyone else is working on :) .

Ha ha, even adults do this, some woman was explaining to me how to do something at work today, and I was just dreaming about my new unfinished library in sunset valley instead of listening.

Some things are more important than real life, you know!!!!

Anyhow, I created my first REAL public building in TS3 last night: an art gallery. Theres not much to play with right now, so I went for it.

bekpek - I like that house a lot, its unusual but looks like it works well.

Winters family home. After spending hours fiddling with the outside, I found when it came to doing the interior, I didnt like the larger proportions in the living area, so I may end up wiping it and starting again. I think I'll keep the exterior look, though.

A few of mine... All of them are in Sunset Valley.

Here is middle class suburban-style homes. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
http://fc04.deviantart.com/fs48/i/2009/215/1/e/Scott__s_House_by_Jordan90.jpg

Here's an old-styled house. Like many of the old houses where I live, the garage is detached and pushed to the back of the lot. This house has 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms

http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs46/i/2009/210/2/5/Kevin_MacArthur__s_House_by_Jordan90.jpg

I redid the downtown area to make it look more conventional. I combined the city hall, the town square, the library, and a 3-story brick apartment building (for decoration only) onto one lot. The school is west of the office building with an alley separating them and the hospital is north of the warehouse. There is a water tower in the middle of the block behind the office building and the school...

The Municipal Library...
http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs48/i/2009/196/7/2/Municipal_Library__north_side_by_Jordan90.jpg

I'm also renaming the town. I never really liked the name Sunset Valley. I've limited the list of possible names to Empire, Vandever, Rockwell, Weston, and Eldonville...

Really?! You are too kind! Take your time; I remember being in school with a huge pile of assignments and lectures. Ugh....

I posted this in the S2 section by mistake.

Hi all,

I have been trolling the site and getting all sorts of materials and ideas for things to do in Sims 3. I kind of got the customizing bug. First it was creating the perfect body skin for my male sims, can't show that here, now its gone to skinning my houses.
This is the house I am presently working on. I call it "The Columns". Its and old style southern Antebellum mansion.

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs50/f/2009/264/9/3/The_Columns_by_impulseman37.jpg

Still is a work in progress. Still have to work further on the landscaping. I may post some interior shots.

Impulseman37, the front of your house is not that far from the City Hall in looks, with its tall pillars and triangular bit above them.
I bet you could build a better town hall than the rabbit hole!

Impulseman37

tizerist,

Funny you should mention city hall, I was thinking of seeing it I could get someone to possibly detach the portico from it and make it an arch for the building mode. I am actually making another Antebellum mansion, a famous one for Halloween and if I could get this thing chopped off City hall and made an build item it would completely finish the job. Although it will be missing a few elements of the original, it will be as architecturally as close as possible. I am hoping to have it far enough along for a few pictures tonight.

Impulse - Fantastic mansion, and I'm interested in seeing the portico project. :)
linnulvklo - Your houses are cute, as always.

Yetta & Ben D'Angelo were expecting their second child in my game, so they desperately needed to move out of their 2 bedroom home.
As Yetta made it all the way up to Surgeon, and Ben is a TV weatherman, they were able to afford a bigger home. Although it nearly broke their bank account, leaving $300 in the kitty.

Their old house, with MOAR landscaping:

One thing I am not good at is outside landscaping. So I've decided to force myself, cause otherwise my mansion is a bit incomplete.
I remember having a rocky fish pond or two in TS2, and was wondering what I could do similar to that, and came out with these couple of bits:

Theres been alot of progress over the last couple of weeks in my SV hood while I wait for WA.

Petrol Station
This is a modified lot from MTS. I felt that the roof cover (originally half the height) wasn't tall enough for a petrol station, so i lifted it. But is it possible to remove those squares on the poles? :/http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg160/tizerist/TS3PETROLSTATION.jpg

Childrens Play Centre
Lots like this partly overcome my fear of building. Its got the 'snug' look that I was aiming for. Almost finished.
Oh, by the way: is there a way to make kids go there? They kinda ignore it...:(

Cinema and Clothes Store
Two different buildings, but on the same lot.
A functioning cinema at last. And its better than the one I had in sims 2 as well. Vending machines will eventually fill the last space inside.
And the clothes store was tricky due to its high ceiling combined with its staircase, but for the most part its a welcome addition to the town

Martine, love the small house..it may be a bit dirty, but that just adds character. :)

Babolat85, your buildings always look so beautiful and always inspire me to try harder and do better work...with exception to what's below! :P

Edit: Strange, I must have been looking at a different page when replying...oh well, more replies!

SpacePirate it looks just like some homes I've seen in some mountain areas I've visited...and seen on TV. It's very charming.

linnulvklo, that house looks just adorable! Nice use of the contrasting colors too, as they're not too overpowering but still draw attention to it.

no.[666]bicycle , is that a "garage" of sorts (or is it called a carport?) were the tree is? It looks rather old fashioned and I never thought about doing something like that. Very interesting. :)

______________________________________

Haven't really had the time to do much game playing lately, and what time I did have was taken up by being lazy. However, I managed to mess around and try to do something new for the neighborhood. I'd like to say it's a work in progress, but really I just don't know what to do with it exactly at this point.

This is my Romanesque + Gothic combo church.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Cathedral_Side.jpg

I just looks "shorter" than it really is. There's also not a lot of windows that work well for churches of the really old variety. I did use the raise terrain trick to get the two towers above 5 stories though, but I kept them about the same height as the dome.

Also, I didn't know what to do with the side entrance....so it looks a little strange. The grounds are also somewhat empty. I may add some gardening type things around there for an abandoned garden. I don't know just yet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/Garek_Maxwell/Screenshots/Cathedral_Inner_Night.jpg

Just a shot of the interior at night. I photoshopped it to give it more atmosphere. ...And yes, there is a bar used as the pulpit (Crypt? I don't know what it's called, I just know it's in the Apse).

And just a few more shots if you're interested.

I'm a newcomer here, I really like the sims 3. The game gives so much possibilities for creating your own character or house.
I have with me two pictures of houses I recently built. Lately I got really in to the concept of modern living so I made these two with that concept in mind. I just started playing sims for about two months and I'm still learning to create good things with the game. And the houses and sims you guys created here just mesmerize me, very inspiring :)

babolat85

greenismeen - Hahahaha, the funny thing is, I was watching it when I was building it. Especially the garage underneath. I just need a vintage Ferrari, or whatever that red car was in the movie.
Roei - Welcome! That 2nd house looks really interesting, I love how it's raised up to capture the country view.

Bleh, bored, had nothing better to do and was itching to build something after hopefully sorting my lag and blue-hole problems with WA, so I took a stab at another of my Sims2 recreations. It's still a work in progress, however.

Original in TS2, occupied by the Carr family in The Keys:
http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp178/TheBabolat/Sims2Original.jpg

Recreation:

http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp178/TheBabolat/Screenshot-29-1.jpg

I think I'll lose the loft window in the top, lower the roofline and possibly change the window over the front door for the third time, then start working on the interior.
