Backed up game help?

I was having issues running the Sims 3 base game, I ruled out my computer being the culprit since I've ran the game and expansions before, so I copied my saved files to my desktop and uninstalled my game. I re-installed it and copied my saves back into the EA folder. When I get onto the game, it's acting as if there are no saves, it asks me to select a neighborhood. How can I get my saves back?

Are the save files still there? Do you now have two TS3 folders? If you make a new save, does that file end up in the same place as your restored save files?
