View Full Version : Pier 11: Sim-made Island

Pier 11. Originally a military/navy base in the middle of the ocean. Now, however, it has flourished into a small city. As it grew, bits were added on to the original framework to create the grey wonder you see today.

Size: Medium, but I'm not sure if that's too much/too little.
Height: What height? It's a flat slab of concrete in the middle of the ocean, with some wood . I just need help with the 'wood' bit. Also grass and so on.
Percent Done: %5, maybe. Possibly less. :P

:here: I need help for the bridges! I don't know how to mod, and I either need a lot of help with making/need someone to recolor and reshape the small egyptian bridge /or/ resize the wooden bridge! I repeat: I don't know how to mod and have never done it before, and need help!

I have a drawing of my plan, but unfortunately I probably won't scan it and upload it here. Since I don't have a scanner.

(The bridges look glitchy because I haven't taken out the ground underneath them yet)

In the pictures, you can see the docks, where docks will be cut out, the Landing Strip, and the original Military Base (The military, police, town hall and FOOD rabbitholes, along with the future pool and gym, barrack and laundry/barracks.)
Behind the military is the fancy-pants housing dock. The leadery-leaders, the rich plane owners, the visitor's houses. In the corner there's the 'Ol' Drunk', every old captain's favorite place to go and enjoy land-bound things like sports and alcohol. Not the 'big lot'- that's completely different. It's for a showtime/decor lot.
Behind the pool/barracks/gym, there's a few lots for the fire department and the like, as well as another barrack. Behind that is the Dock. Many of the future old storage containers will have been re-purposed. >.>

Beside the 'top' of the dock (the landing strip is always the 'bottom' for me) there is a blank swathe of road.
:here: I need help making a 'wooden planks' texture! Or finding one. Either as a road or paint! I'm hoping the 'middle bit' of this 'city' will be a wooden dock.

I'll probably delete the bridge furthest right.
I also need help connecting the paths to the roads, since the tutorial I looked at showed that it was possible but it doesn't seem to work for me.

Sorry for the rant! As you might notice, I'm a very nooby noob, and need a bit of help and quite a lot of critique and advice to get this off the ground. :turtle:

I was inspired by the docks in showtime. xD

EDIT 2:
Update!
I'll probably find a way around the second set of bridges, a bit too uniform. And I'll recolour the third-piece streets. http://i46.tinypic.com/vhqr1f.jpg
Speaking of recolouring, the roof of the science/hospital will be changed once everything is plotted out.

Oh yeah! I forgot to explain what I mean by 'first' 'second' and 'third' piece. Well, the 'first piece' is the original military base. The 'second' is the housing and other utilities that were added to make it a small, self-sustaining town (such as grocery store, hospital, and graveyard) and the 'third' piece was added last, with the rest of the utilities and less-necessary 'other' bits that make it a fully-developed town. (Things like school, museum and other cultural centers, news, etc.)

Very interesting, I had plans for a world similar to this, but based as a resort island like the Ark from Brink. Man-made islands are generally cool :)

http://brink.wikia.com/wiki/The_Ark
http://deadendthrills.com/?s=brink

Some notes:
1.) Is this near the coast or not? If not, the island will either rest on a frame or float on pontoons- as such, buildings will tend to be economical in space, lacking roads and relying more on interconnected, modular structures. Examples:
Mother Base (Metal Gear):

Buckminister Fuller's Floating City and related Arcologies:

The ever ubiquitous oil rig:

Man-made islands near coastlines tend to be built out of fill dredged off the seafloor. Because of a larger base, more conventional structures can be built. Examples:
Miami (http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=miami&ll=25.779361,-80.162296&spn=0.006005,0.008256&hnear=Miami,+Miami-Dade,+Florida,+United+States&gl=ca&t=h&z=18)

Dubai (http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=dubai&hl=en&ll=25.117621,55.138493&spn=0.068311,0.132093&sll=34.434169,135.231915&sspn=0.062225,0.132093&t=h&gl=ca&hnear=Dubai+-+United+Arab+Emirates&z=14)

Somtimes a hybrid form takes place:

Hope this helps!

That helps a lot! Thank you so much! I'll probably find a way to do a mix of frame and platoons. Say, section one and three on a frame, three suspended between. Or the other way around. We'll see. It's just not very logical for and airport to be on platoons or it might as well be an aircraft-carrier/ship. (Which I may do, now that I think of it... but probably not)

I may try to abolish roads completely on section 1, since their existance is questionable in the first place. Footpaths only. Minimum in 2 and 3, too, I just want it to be a fully functional city, which includes roads.

EDIT: You may have also helped with the bridges issue! Thanks!

EDIT2: Opinions. Does this look alright as 'scaffolding' or should I use something else?
http://i47.tinypic.com/dlg7dj.jpg
For example, this instead?

I can't find anything that's "metal".

:here: I actually am not sure about how to do this properly, since if I do it that way, the side stands out. I may do it as a dock built onto a very tiny island.
I've decided! No docks. All floating, as built close together as possible, a small city in a BIIIG OCEAN. This will be fun!

yzisme, I like the second image with the wood supports. :)

This is a very interesting project, this may help you with recolouring the bridges:

I dislike the fact that firstly, it is from the long wooden bridge, and secondly, I don't know how one could cover the sides of the lot. And I can't place a dock under a non-lot.
I wish I could use the new world objects, but since it's a store item...

I'd rather resize than recolour. :L

I'm afraid it may turn out a bit squarish in places and I know MTS is against that...

NOTE: Although this project is ongoing, I can't get CAW to turn on. It just shows the loading screen and that's it. I did update it but is still doesn't work.

I had to uninstall CAW and reinstall it (after first backing up my world projects) after updating with the latest patch. You might try that. I too like the second "support" under the "platform". (I'm guessing that you made it by lowering a bridge or similar object.) As far as the lot edges, the terrain paint at the very edge will extend down over the side. If you can find a terrain paint that doesn't "stretch/distort" too much, you can easily make the sides/edges of the world look man made. Another option would be one of the retaining walls, if you have them. (They might extend down too far under the edge, though.) Good luck with your interesting project!

Wow! I love this image! (Although I'm not familiar with metalgear.) Do you mind if I attempt it? (I don't want to steal your idea or get off topic in this thread.)

Sure you can! I wasn't planning on basing it off of Metal Gear anyways, but the Ark from Brink:

Did you ever find any help with a wooden terrain paint or road? I am trying to make a pier with those new pier objects and aside from figuring out just how to use them I am having incredible difficulty finding any wooden plank paint to use.
