Thanks to boblishman for teaching me this. This is his information that I'm putting together in a simple tutorial since it was requested.

This tutorial will show you how to extract a born-in-game sim so you can make copies or upload them.

You will need the following tools-
-SimPE (this tutorial uses the most recent version)
-Body Shop

Step 1 [b]

Open SimPe
From the "File" tab-Select Open, and navigate to the neighborhood that houses the sim you wish to extract.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step1-fileopen.jpg

For this tutorial I will be working in Neighborhood 4.

[b]Step 2
Navigate to My Documents/Ea Games/Sims 2/Neighborhoods/N004/N004_Neighborhood. And select open or ok. Let this file load.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step2-navigatehere.jpg

Step 3
On the left you will see a small window with options in it. Click once on "Sim Description".
The box now to the right of this window will show you a list of all sims in that neighborhood.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step3-simdescription.jpg

Step 4

Find your sims name on the list in the box to the right and click once on them. This will open up the bottom plug in view with their photo and personal statistics.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step4-selectyoursim.jpg

Step 5

Now go back up to the top and select
Tools-Neighborhoods-Sim Surgery

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step5-startsimsurgery.jpg

Let this load for a moment.

Step 6
The Sim Surgery window will open up. To the left in the pool is a list of all sims in the neighborhood arranged alphabetically by first name. Find your sim on this list. Once you do, click once on thier photo to highlight it.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step6-simsurgeryscreen.jpg

Step 7

Under Patient sim, select the USE button. Your sims picture will now appear in the first box.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step7-findsim-hituse.jpg

Step 8

Now you will select the EXPORT option at the top of this window. It will open up a save screen into your Saved Sims folder. You can rename the sim or leave it as the file name SimPe gives you. Hit save.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/step8-export-save.jpg

Step 9

Close SimPe.
Open Body Shop

Step 10

Go to Build or Clone sims.
Sort through your list of custom made sims if you have any in body shop. The sim you just exported may not always show as the first sim, so sort through until you find him or her. And select the CLONE option at the bottom of your body shop window.
This will create a duplicate of the sim you just extracted.

Hit the check mark to save the sim.
Now back up and select "Package Sims" from the body shop main menu.
Package your sim to a sims2package file and Thats it!
*****MAKE SURE YOU PACKAGE THE CLONE OF THE EXTRACTED SIM****

You've just packaged up a born in game sim and can share him with your friends. I hope this helps some of youw ho had trouble with this like I did. Good Luck!

For anyone who doesn't know the Neighbourhood Number of the lot that contains their Sim....here's another way to find him/her.....

1. Open Simpe ...then

2. Go to Tools/Neighbourhood/Neighbourhood Browser

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/Image1.jpg

3. Give it time to load..... then select the Neighbourhood where you Sim is and click OPEN ...

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/Image2.jpg

4. Give it time to load....then Select Tools/Neighbourhood/Sim Surgery

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/LyricLee2/Image3.jpg

Once Sim Surgery has opened, you follow the proceedure as above (from STEP 6) onwards....

p.s I take NO credit for this....it's stuff I learned from threads already here (mostly by Pinhead)

Thanks you guys.

I need some help with this, I have a question.

K, say I want to change the appearance of a Sim I've already made and put in the game. So I do these steps and get him/her in bodyshop and start editing. THEN what do I do next to override the character thats still in-game, so that it can have the changes I made, but still keep its memories, personality, and all its traits? Just to replace its look?

Also, are you able to package a Sim not just from Bodyshop, but after you've giving it its personality and traits like that? So that you can give it to someone else with its personality, experiences and relationships intact?

why the clone and not the sim?

Punkloser
3rd Nov 2005, 09:56 PM
I've learned that by extracting a Vampire from the game using SimPE you get a regular sim but with FANGS. They're quite adorable really....hahaaaaa

..........aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand....

you can change their face too(not their full bodies) and they keep the fangs....

So you can have many different looking Sims with fangs.

Thanks for that tip Punk- how cool.

The vampire flag is held with the sim, not their physical information. The Dying Informant, use the archetype created and make a temporary sim in-game in THAT neighborhood. The using sim surgery, use the temp sim as the archetype and the original sim as the patient.

why the clone and not the sim?

Yes, I would also like to know why. What happens if you package the sim and not the clone? Is it ok to delete the sim out of bodyshop and keep only the clone in there?

Yes it is.

Thanks much for this post, this is something I've been wanting to do with some of my born in game sims. One of them, unfortunately, has already died, and I don't have the Resurrect thingie-a-tron (that's with Uni right?) (but I do have NL). I extracted her anyway, cloned her in BodyShop and made her an adult, so maybe she'll be able to walk through walls?
Think I'll be looking in the tutorials section more often. Thanks a lot!!

jaxad0127

I don't think so. When you extract them to body shop, all you extract is their looks.

I have a question, but looking at the post nobody seems to be answering any questions, anyhow on the off chance somebody might, I did the above tut and found that my sim came into bodyshop without custom items like makeup, eyes, the outfit and hair was there, but no makeup and for the celebrity sim Cher I made she needs her makeup with all the plasto surgery she has had done, lol. Did i miss something when exporting her and do u have to check the box's makeup, eys and face?

Thanks Donah

jaxad0127

You may need to have SimPE scan the folder(s) where those are located.

donah007
22nd Nov 2005, 11:04 PM
I just tried checking the three boxes makeup, face and eyes and made no difference, the custom makeup, eyes and skintone still did not show up in bodyshop. Does the custom stuff have to be imported in to bobyshop seperatly, but then why does simPE export the hair and outfit but not the makeup, skintone and eyes? Please is anyone else had this prob and what am i doing wrong.

Thanks Donah

I've extract the social bunny - but when i try to open it in my bodyshop for cloning bodyshop crashes down... :-(

jaxad0127
22nd Jan 2006, 05:20 PM
The social bunny doesn't have a character file, so nothing to export to bodyshop. If you enable the testing cheats, you can put cas into debug mode, ctrl-m or ctrl-n, and give one of your sims the bunny costume. Then extract him/her to bodyshop.

For some reason, my Bodyshop won't even load. (it's been like that since I installed University) so is there a way I can package my extracted Sims (I can do the SimPE part, mind you) from in-game, or is there at least a way to reinstall Bodyshop without reinstalling my whole game?

I had the same problem for the first time day before yesterday with my bodyshop. It would crash halfway through bringing it up. Is that what yours was doing? For me, I figured out the reason was that I needed to drag the neighborhoods folder out to desktop while I was working on clothing, and then drag it back into its proper position once I was done with body shop to play the game. This was after much trial and error to find out what was causing the problem. Still not sure what caused it but there are a few possibilities.

1, I had had the game crash while it was exiting out so maybe something messed up during the process, but the game itself seems fine.

2, I had just downloaded a bunch of different custom outfits etc. to the game that might have caused a conflict, but the game itself, again, seemed fine. Also, once I pulled out neighborhoods everything worked fine in body shop including the outfits I had just downloaded.

3, perhaps my neighborhoods file just finally got too big for the memory to handle loading it for body shop. But why does body shop particularly need neighborhoods to work? or was it my downloads folder combined with neighborhoods that got too big for memory to handle, and by removing the nonessential one (for bodyshop) it worked fine? Just remember to drop neighborhoods back in to place before running the game. (btw I have 9 neighborhoods so maybe that is why I overwhelmed it! not to mention upteen million downloads, quite a few hacks..... you get the picture :) )

sleep4uall

I had some sims I deleted without meaning to, because of a screwup with veronaville from a stupid error in logic with simpe (mine, not simpe's!) and they had duplicates but the ones that were deleted had household set as unknown on the sim browser in simpe. The ones that were left had an actual household name. Also, the sims' pictures that were deleted showed up darker in the sims browser.

edited to add something that might be important.

Maybe you should pull out all your important folders in sims2 game out on desktop or store to cd (like neighborhoods, lots, downloads, saved sims etc.) uninstall the game and reinstall and drop your folders back in and see if that helps? either that, or try what I did, and pull out the various folders i just mentioned to desktop, try to run it, and see if that would make it load then drop them in one at a time to see if you could figure out which one is the problem folder (if there is one)

I have a crashed game which was restored but is very flaky. The game refuses to let me pack them the families so I'm glad you wrote this. I'll play around with it since I CAN see the sims in game, I just can't get them out of it.

Actually, I'd like to extract the original born in game sims and package them so I reinstall the game. I don't care about their houses. I moved the crashed neighborhood onto the clean neighbohood but it's cranky. If all else fails, I'll make clones and use teh InSIMenator to reestablish their family relationships. :0)

i hate to be so annoying, but im pretty sure thats what im doing. plus, i have probably hundreds of custom content files in that folder, and not one shows up in body shop.

Is your version of bodyshop the one that came with the game or the one that was released before the original game? I realize that they should be the same and it should not matter but I had a very similar problem to yours back when I was still running the bodyshop I had had from before the game was released. Custom content just would not show up in game. Hair, clothes, makeup,...it was really a pain especially since I found most of the stuff that came with the game so darn boring. The whole issue worked itself out somewhere between University and nightlife. I had so many issues with my games and through both of the earlier expansions I pretty much had to start from scratch more than once. I have lost sooo many sims and entire neighborhoods that even if I tried saving and placing back into the game after a reinstall just never worked properly. Anyway at some point I finally uninstalled EVERYTHING. Bodyshop and the game and my expansions and then just reinstalled allowing the game to install bodyshop from the game disks. I kept nothing but my downloads folder and even that I went through carefully for any wierd items or hacks that I thought might in the smallest way mess with my game. Anyway doing that finally completely solved my problem. I have no idea what you will need to do to solve yours but be prepared for it to be as drastic and devastating as my solution ended up being. I have to admit by that time I had gotten pretty used to losing entire neighborhoods of beloved sims. In fact within the last several months is the first time since I bought the original game (as soon as it was released) that I have had a third generation born in my game.
Anyway my ramblings aside the bodyshop that you have may or may not be at fault. To be honest I don't think I ever heard of anyone else having the problem I had with the bodyshop that could be downloaded prior to the game release. However that could be because most people were just smarter than I and deleted the other bodyshop before beginning the game install.
I only hope that this might help you even a little bit.

About the disappearing Sims, did you change the file name of the extracted clone? If you kept the name the same (N001_User00182, for example is Sprite Cola), the game cannot recognize the character file. Your Sim may be on the lot but will only have a red plumbbob. Always, ALWAYS, change that file name. Hell, throw an extension on the end (N001_User00182_Clone) and that little change makes it read-able in BS and Create-A-Sim and have no effet on the original Sim, Sprite Cola.

For those players who cannot get BS to even open up, check your 'The Sims 2' folder for MMDump files (something like that). Delete those as well as the 'groups.cache' and 'cigen' files. Bodyshop should load up next time, if very slowly. Make a sandwich or something if you have a lot of custom content. Wait for the program to do its thing. If it seems too long, check the folder again for odd files.

Ack I am also having a problem with my Sim showing up in BodyShop. I have put the file both in SavedSims and in Downloads--it just isn't showing up in BodyShop. What could be happening?

PS: There are 7 Sims showing up in my BodyShop. I only have 3 sims in my SavedSims folder and many more than 7 in my downloads. So where on Earth is it pulling from?

Something similar happened to me. Numbers and nothing, as if it has the wrong folder or something. The only way to do that is by the surgery table from Uni. But it doesn't carry to the Body Shop clone. I prettied one of my sims up with the table and then exported them... same hideous sim I started out with.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I've been barely touching my game out of fear of losing a few sims I created in CAS, now they're safely backed up :)

Awesome! The most cutest child-sim I have ever made, ever, I made by breeding sims... xD Almost impossible to remake the sim in body shop, so it makes it rather hard to remake the sim. This is awesome; thanks sooo much for this guide! ^^;'' -Goes to open up bodyshop and see if it works-
Edit: It works wonderfully! Wootness! ^^;'' Thankies thankies thankies thankies!

Hi! This tutorial works very well, and I'm surprised at how easy it is. I have one question though - while I was being an idiot a few months ago, I deleted the family containing the sim I want to extract. I noticed that in simpe the sim and the rest of the family still appear in the sim description list but not in the sim surgery list. Is there any way to make her appear in the sim surgery list where she can be extracted?

I tried adding her and the rest of her household to an existing family, but that didn't work.

Thanks!

Does the neighborhood has to be in the EA games folder to extract the Sim? I say this because I just restarted all my neighborhoods but moved my old ones to my desktop. So would it affect my game is I extract a Sim from one of my desktop neighborhoods?

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I looked through the responses below but none of them seems to address this. I'm not interested in uploading my sim anywhere, I just want to change her in-game appearance while keeping all of her memories etc in tact.

I'm also trying to do this, I know about the plastic surgery machine, but I do not wish to change my sims facial structure, only his skin tone. I need to update his skin tone with one I recently created...is there a way to do this? As the only plastic surgery machine I have seen, only modifies facial structure.

If you want to change only their skintone, here's what you need to do:

1. Create a Sim that has the new skintone (leave them in the Sim Bin if you want; you don't have to play them at all).
2. Exit the game.
3. Start up SimPE and then open up the Neighborhood Browser and choose the appropriate 'hood.
4. Select Sim Browser and choose the Sim that you recently created.
5. Click on the More button and select SimDNA.
6. You'll see five lines of code under both Dominant and Recessive. Since this is a new Sim, both sets of code will be exactly the same (well, four lines of code and an area that lists the dominant facial features in the Dominant area).
7. Copy the line next to Skintone. Paste it into a Notepad document if you wish (again, since this is a new Sim, the code should be exactly the same).
8. Go back to Sim Browser and select the Sim you want to change. Again, click on More and then SimDNA.
9. Copy that line of code to both the Dominant and Recessive areas if you want the skintone to be very dominant. If you don't want that, just copy it to the Dominant area.
10. Click Commit and Save. Done.

Oh and Chrizta0000, yes I believe the 'hood has to be in the My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Neighborhoods folder to be able to extract a Sim from there. It's easy to do, though. Just move the folder back there, open up SimPE, extract the Sim, and then remove the 'hood's folder again. Easy.

I had this same problem...my simmies didn't show up in Body Shop, after exporting...

BUT !...for me, for some reasons, i have to put their pictures in BOTH "patient" AND "archetype" for it to work !!!
So i find my sim, then click on their picture...click on USE in both squarie windows, then i click EXPORT...then i rename them and hit ok.

Then i find my sims in Body Shop, and CAS. you guys could try this ? it is the only ways for me.

If you have bon voyage, you CANNOT use SimPE to edit characters or neighborhoods, not until the SimPE for bon voyage comes out. Perhaps that's the problem?

EDIT :!: : I found the problem. I had not unchecked "No Meta Informations." Was that in the tutorial? I seemed to have overlooked it and had to read the 2nd page of this thread :giggler: I didn't delete this post because I was thinking if someone else seems to have this problem, reading my question/answer might help...

I'm not sure why... but my sim is showing up with the name "Unknown". I found him with the Family Information thing under the Resource Tree (the part on the left). I created him in game and moved him directly into a house, saved the game, and exited it. I then opened up SimPe and started to do the tutorial (I admit, I looked around a bit before continuing the tutorial, because the option of searching Neighborhood information really interested me and I wanted to see different options). When I came to the point of finding my sim is named "Unknown" I also realized that all the other sims are named "Unknown" but have their last names intact. I figured maybe I could still extract the Sim by following the second post in this thread but, when I opened the Sim Surgery option... there wasn't SINGLE sim to be found despite that fact that I was using Veronaville and I had never deleted any of the sims that came with that neighborhood. Actually, I had never played that neighborhood until I created this sim to try this tutorial. What had I done wrong to lose the information linked to names and such? Or, what did I do wrong period? (It might not have been name information that I lost, I guess is what I meant) Does this only work for sims that were actually BORN in the game? Thanks in advance for any help.

K, so I tried to extract my beautiful sim, LUNA WAYNE, that was born in game. I did everything by tutorial, but it doesn't work.
when I go to body shop, there's a sim with same clothes, makeup, hair like Luna, but with different face. She doesn't even have pointed ears like her.
I already cloned her in bodyshop, tried to extract her again but she still gets that other face.
Her face looks right in simPE (in surgery too).

I was wondering what could go wrong and I think I should tell you that there are two Luna's in Sim Description. One of them is Luna like she looked when she was Young Adult. She doesn't appear is Surgery window. Is that usual?, because I noticed a few other Sims to be written twice. The "old" picture is on a blue background.

I really want to extract that sim, she's really beautiful and many people asked me to share her so.... please, help.

Just a thought for fellow Mac users, if you have PC-using simming friends; package up the entire house, family and all, and send it over to said friend. Said friend should, of course, not let a SINGLE sim in this household interact with anybody, or should place it in an empty neighborhood. Your PC friend can then extract the Sim for you, and you owe that friend dinner. lol.

It's a little dangerous, but it's what I'm trying.

I wanted to extract the Sim I made in CAS, because I seriously messed up the house she and her boyfriend was in. I followed all the above steps for both her and her boyfriend, then installed the Sims to my game with Clean Install, but neither of them are showing up in my game. I have tried enabling custom content several times and it has not work.

They both show up in SimPE and Body Shop. Just not in the game.

I'm trying to use this to get rid of unused custom content from my downloads. I wanted to extract the sims I use, delete all other skins and genetics, then thought if I put them back that only their skin and genetics would be there. Not so, as others have said Makeup, eyes, etc, don't package with the sim.

How do we identify which makeup/genetics, etc belong to our sims in simpe? I am new to simpe and hope someone can answer the question for all of us who have asked. It is the makeup and genetics that make the sim.

Hi

Thanks for your tutorial!!
I did what you say and yes, I successfully extracted two sims that I created during the game...well,not so successful actually. When I opened the Sim bodyshop and looked for the sims I just extracted, they icon pictures look exactly like the ones I created but when I cloned them, they appeares to be totally different then my original sims. As matter of fact, they look horrible!! My original sims are very adorable and no they look so ugly. I don't know why is that, I did every thing accoring to the tutorial. I deleted the two terrifying sims and back to SimPE to work again. However, they appeared the same ugly way as the first time. :(

I need help!!
Please tell me what can I do to fix this problem.

Thank you!!

I have two really good looking sims that i made in CAS and I would love to share and keep them in my body shop as well, so I can have the original pretty sims grow old and not to worry that if I ever want to see them in my game again.
I opened my bodyshop and found two extrememly ugly sims...that relly break my heart!!

SP_Passion, do you see a package file in your SavedSims folder that matches the name you gave to the file you extracted using SimPE?

If the package file you extracted is in the My Documents/EA Games/SavedSims folder, when you go into Bodyshop, are you looking in the correct gender and age group?

Step 1 [b]

Open SimPE From the "File" tab-Select Open, and navigate to the neighborhood that houses the sim you wish to extract.

It doesnt seem I cant open folders only individual files.I go to the File tab and I choose Open then I go in the neighbours folder then I cant open the neighbour folder N001(the one im interested in), it only let me go inside the neighbour folder and into any of the other folders like , characters, and then inside and I have to pick up a single file.

Anyone can tell me what to do?

mangaroo
7th Jan 2010, 11:41 PM
1) Open SimPE .
2) From the top menu, select Tools>Neighborhood>Neighborhood Browser...
3) Select the neighborhood your Sim is in (the main 'hood, specified as Normal: [name])
4) Once that neighborhood is loaded, from the top menu, select Tools>Neighborhood>Sims Surgery...
5) Wait patiently for the data to load. This may take some time. When the data has loaded, the Sim Surgery window will pop up.
6) Select your Sim from the list of available Sims in the "Sim Pool"
7) Click "use" under Patient Sim. Double-check the picture and name to be sure that you have selected the correct Sim.
8) Now click Export (next to Patient).
9) Save. (You can rename the exported file before saving it.)
10) If you want to package this Sim, create a clone in Body Shop and export there. Do not transfer the file exported from SimPE straight into another game.

My sims won't show up in body shop either. No one has posted for 2 months so I don't think I'll get an answer but I'll try anyways.

I had this happen, and what I discovered is that in the Saved Sims folder, somehow I had a .bak file with the sim name I saved it under instead of a .package file. In other words, instead of the file saying "Jason.package" for example, it would say "Jason.bak" -- there may even have been one of both the .package and the .bak file with the same character name, but I can't remember since it's been awhile since I've extracted a sim from my game. (I do remember getting rid of the original .package file and then changing the .bak file extension to a .package extension, so maybe that was the case.)

In any event, the .bak file is the correct one to use, so long as you change that ".bak" to a ".package" -- and ignore when your computer tells you the file might become unusable! Once I did that, the sim appeared in Body Shop.

By the way, for those who have issues with Body Shop crashing or not loading, I've found that as someone said earlier, you need to pull out your Neighborhoods folder. I pull mine out and put it on the desktop, use Bodyshop, and then after I'm done, I put it back where it belongs in the folder again. That's the only way my Bodyshop will work, probably because my Downloads folder is so huge.

I have a question, though. I know this thread doesn't get much action, but I hope someone can answer this. If you extract a born-in-game sim and clone it in Bodyshop, will you get the sim's combined DNA? In other words, if your sim is born of two sims with different skintones, will the cloned sim be carrying the DNA for both skintones, or will it only have the one it displays?

arina, where are you saving the file you're exporting via SimPE? That .package file needs to be in your Downloads or SavedSims folder.

Are you looking in the correct gender and age group in Bodyshop? I assume she was an adult and not a YA when you exported her, so you're looking in female adult?

arinaftw
25th Dec 2010, 10:21 PM
I'm saving the file to EA Games > The Sims 2 > Saved Sims. And about the downloads folder, is it the game's or Bodyshop's?

Also, what do you mean the correct gender & age group? There is no option for that in my bodyshop..?

mangaroo
30th Dec 2010, 02:06 AM
And about the downloads folder, is it the game's or Bodyshop's?

Are you using the prerelease version of Bodyshop or the one that is automatically installed with the game? If it's the prerelease version, I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with its eccentricities and can't provide any help. If it's the one that comes with the game, then it automatically uses the same Downloads and SavedSims folders as the game.

The UI for bodyshop does have selectors for age and gender, but I forgot those weren't enabled when selecting premade Sims from the bin. Sorry for the confusion!
