  • 08-11-2018:
    • Do not allow the pet cages from My First Pet Stuff to be packed away. These have been reported as causing issues which can lock up your game.
  • 06-26-2018:
    • Updated for the June 19, 2018 game patch (version 1.44.77.1020).
    • Tested working with today's (June 26) game patch.
    • Some objects that cannot be placed on the lot automatically are now no longer allowed in the household inventory. I've identified at least the majority of these and they no longer are allowed to be packed in a crate, however these items (primarily windows) may already be in a crate and upon unpacking them they will simply be deleted.
    • Unpacking from a crate on a floor other than the ground floor will now place the unpacked items near the crate rather than onto the ground floor.


Description

So one afternoon about three weeks ago, a sim of mine that had grown up to a young-adult wanted to swipe some of his parent's neat household items when he moved out. He asked me if it was possible to move them from one house to another. "No!" I replied, "It simply can't be done!" But he had an interesting idea, "What if you made a box that was big enough to hold a piano, but small enough I could fit in my pocket?"

"Ridiculous!" I said. "Impossible!" I snorted.

He just grinned, "You made lockable doors, most people said that was impossible...."

That sounded like a challenge to me... and I love a good challenge.

After three weeks of work, many failed attempts and dead-ends, and a serious quantity of coffee, I'm ready to unveil Packing Crates for The Sims 4.

This mod adds a "Pack in Crate" menu item to every item in the game (with a few exceptions) that cannot be normally placed in an inventory. Selecting this menu choice will search the lot for a free packing crate and move that item into the crate's inventory. If no packing crate can be located on the lot, the action will be cancelled.

Crates can be purchased from Storage/Miscellaneous in build-buy for 150 simoleons. The crate was cloned from the crate end-table in the game and will also still serve as an end-table if you want.

After packing objects into a crate, the crate itself can be placed into a sim's inventory and carried with them to a new home. Crates can also be left around the lot for use as storage (or end-tables).

To unpack a crate, place it into the world and open it's inventory. Clicking on an item in the crate inventory will result in a "Place in World" menu choice. The object will be placed near the crate (it will always appear on the first floor). If the game cannot find a place for the object (for instance, paintings and other wall-art will not place automatically) then the object will be placed into the household inventory. Notifications will appear if there are any problems.

The menu choices and the ability to store objects in the crates are added dynamically by the script portion of the mod, so this is compatible with custom content objects, and all expansion packs (even new unreleased ones).

Warning! - It should be noted that if you remove the mod, any items that are stored in crates will disappear along with the crates themselves! You may want to make sure you unpack all crates on all lots prior to removing the mod.

*MINOR* Bug Notice

There is one bug that I have been unable to figure out, but it's not a game changer. The code has been written to take great care with your objects and not lose them in a move.

When a crate is placed in the sim's inventory, and then the sim moves to another lot or the game is saved/reloaded with that crate in their inventory, when opening the crate it will show all the objects in it as being a stack of two. This is an interface glitch only, there is only one copy of the object in the crate and it will unpack normally. However, after unpacking one copy of the object will appear to still be in the crate's inventory. It's not really there! If you click on the crate version of the object, the menu will appear as if you clicked the actual object, which is confusing but I can live with it. The remaining ghost object will go away the next time the game is saved and reloaded.

Ghost items that have not yet been unpacked will also straighten themselves out if the crate is placed back on the lot and the game saved/reloaded.

Weird... but it doesn't really hurt anything. I'm not sure if the problem is fixable without changing the game's user interface code which is not very accessible.

Installation Instructions and Compatibility

This mod was written and tested on Windows for The Sims 4 version 1.36.99.1020 (Nov 7, 2017).

This mod uses the ts4script file format for the script portion of the mod and cannot be installed automatically with a mod manager (until a mod manager is updated to support these files). To install the mod manually, extract both the package and ts4script files from the download into your mods folder.

Script mods must be enabled in your game options for this mod to work properly.

Nobody's bought me a Mac yet, so until I hear from someone who tries it out, I can only assume it will work on a Mac. I don't know of any reason why it wouldn't work.

The mod modifies one of the game scripts in ways that may not be compatible with other mods, but that would be their fault, not mine!

Basic Download and Install Instructions:
1. Download: Click the File tab to see the download link. Click the link to save the .rar or .zip file(s) to your computer.

Updated the mod today. The new patch delayed things a bit (everything was working, went to do final test of the packaged version and patch started downloading instead - so had to retest things). The biggest change, other than the bugfix so putting the crate into a sim's inventory again, is that unpacking objects from a crate now places them on the same floor as the crate (or sim, if the crate is in the sim's inventory).

You need to enable packing by placing one of the crates on a floor, click it and select "Enable Packing". Until you do so the menu doesn't appear on objects in the game (so it doesn't clutter your menus 24/7).

Was so excited when I found this mod, and it was everything I hoped for and more! It makes moving out feel so much more like an "event," even if I'm just switching things in manage households. Also, it's great for vacations--my vampires can finally go camping cause they can haul their coffins along with them!

This would purely be for aesthetics, but would you ever consider making similar objects shaped like suitcases or backpacks? Hardly necessary, I know, but it just tickles me to imagine my sims being able to pack a suitcase for vacation!

I'm not an object maker, don't have that particular skill, but if someone were to make such an object it could certainly have the tuning for packing attached to it. One of the included crates (the stackable one) was a custom object created by Plasticbox for instance. The one I did was basically just a clone of one of the base game crates with some texture changes.

Awesome idea! I have often wanted to take a sims "room" with them..at least the items within it.

I really love this mod, it's one of my favourite at all since I descovered it! Right now I need it so badly, but unfortunatly it's causing me a bug with the UI after the gallery update The problem is that time stops at a certain point, but sims continue to move until they finish their action, meanwhile I can't pause or click on anything, I can't even close the game. I tried for two days every single mod that I have and now I find that is only this one that cause this particular problem (and also LastException files) and I'm so sad about it ç_ç Is there any chance for a fix/update/solution?

I'm not able to replicate any issues, everything with this mod seems to be working perfectly for me. You could send me a copy of the LE file if you want me to take a look. Anything I would suggest that could be causing your issue would just be a guess without more information, such as do you have an existing crate with items in it? Is that crate in the household, or in a Sim's inventory? Does the error occur when you try to pack an object or when you try to unpack it? Is the Sim on their home lot or another one?

I assume that you are running the latest version of the mod and that you have double-checked that you don't have an old copy of it lying around somewhere in your mods folder.

I give you as much infos I can: I have multiple crates (with objects inside) in the inventory of two different sims in the same household (two YA that move out) and all the family are in the home lot. The LE appears immediatly when I start to play with the family, but the most important problem is time stopping and everything blocked (I have to close the game with ctrl+alt+del). Is it maybe because of some custom objects that I packed into the crates?
I totally think I have the last update of the mod because I updated it after season patch.

Okay, I think I found out what's the problem. I played for a while and no problem was showing, but then I packed one of these small pets by TheKalino (https://kalino-thesims.tumblr.com/p...ge-and-recolors) and the time restarts to make problems.

Nice bit of detective work there! Yes, I can see looking at the object tuning for those that they could possibly cause issues if packed away. I'll have to add some code to block those from getting the packing mod applied to them. I'll wait a day or two before doing that until you're certain that's what was causing your issue.

Thanks! Okay, now I finally get to the wedding (yeee finally moving from that house! ), but just when the couple were about to do the main action of the event, the man just desappears and the time stops again like in a sort of witchy spell! I thinks that's because I tried to pack a normal small pet (a rat XD) in the crate that the bride has in the inventory before the event starts...but this time it wasn't one of TheKalino's pets, it was a simple rat from My First Pet pack. Tomorrow I will try again and every rat will stay at home (Sorry Cinderella, Jaq & GusGus are not invited anymore! )

Yeah, the pets you sent me the link to are just basically recolors of the existing ones from Pet Stuff, so the ones that came with that pack will also cause the issue. Not sure how many of those there are. There are four tuning files, but more than four pets may point to those files - in any event marking those four tuning files as "don't pack" should solve the problem for all of the objects that use that tuning.

Sorry you can't take your pets with you - there's probably a way I could put them in suspended animation for the move, but not having either Pets or Pet Stuff would make creating such a method nearly impossible.

Just thank you for this explanation, if maybe one day you could do something about it would be really amazing, but this mod is already wonderful and useful, so don't worry and thanks for creating all your mods!

Hi! I just found this mod and I was really excited to use it, especially since you updated it, but I was disappointed to find that I couldn't Pack things like Upgrade Parts and seed packets. Are these some of the objects you can't Pack that you alluded to in the mod description? I would love it if they could be Packed, but if it would take too much time and effort to be worked in to be practical or if it just doesn't work, then I understand. Please reply?

Since those objects can be carried in a Sim's inventory already there is no real need to alter the objects to allow them to be packed. Just carry them!

Yes, there are technical reasons why some of that class of item won't work well with packing crates, and although upgrade parts and seed packets would likely work fine, the process of determining which would work and which wouldn't would be an error prone task and one that I couldn't test fully as I don't have (or intend to have) all the game packs for TS4. It seemed an okay compromise to just allow those items that can be carried to be eliminated from packing crates.
