Edit: Ok, I'm going to follow the FAQs on patches, since I've eliminated the custom content. I also currently reinstalled and have the unpatched version, but I need to check the wiki to see if anything was left behind. I fixed the music issue though. It was a device problem.

I looked and I couldn't find much on this already. There was one post in the locked sticky on patches thread, but I don't think anyone had any answers.

I updated my game a few days back. It went straight from 1.0 to 1.8... I think. Er, yeah. Anyway, the game is extremely slow now. For example, in CAS, it takes like 3 minutes or so when I switch clothing categories, and it takes *forever* for the clothes to load. When I was running 1.0 it would take like 20 seconds at the most. Or creating styles for clothing... it takes forever for it to load.

Does anyone know what could have happened or if I can do anything? My computer is old, but it was running ok before I patched and it meets the system reqs. lol. It's like my game performance is going in reverse. My 1.0 version was so much faster than my 1.8 version. I also have no custom content installed at this time. When I was running 1.0, I had like 600 MB of custom stuff, and it was way *faster* than the 1.8 version with *no* custom stuff. What gives?

I'm about ready to uninstall the whole game and then reinstall and *not* let the thing update itself. Even if it means I probably will not be able to use any mods.

Edit: Oh yeah! I forgot about my music issue. The background music keeps skipping now... and for like 10 or 20 seconds at a time. One note. Over and over... And over. It never did this before, and it's driving me *nuts*. Yet another reason I'm going to downgrade back to 1.0 if I can't find a solution to this. lol.

The best option is to install patches by hand and install them in order (don’t jump from 1.0 to 1.8) and test the game after each patch to make sure it works. Use this site has all the patches you need http://www.patches-scrolls.de/

In order to better solve your problem, please go through the following as listed below:

General - Problem Custom Content
Your issue is related to conflicting, outdated, or badly made custom content. Please follow the Finding Problem Custom Content (http://www.sims2wiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content) FAQ.

Sims 3 - Loading Crashes
If your game is crashing on load, with or without an error message, or the game starts up then just disappears, then you have a loading crash.

Please see the following FAQ and go through the steps listed in order to try fixing your game: Game_Help:Sims_3_Loading_Crashes.

Sims 3 - Uninstall
This Game_Help:TS3_Uninstall link has the step-by-step instructions to guide you through uninstalling The Sims 3.

I wouldn't recommend downloading patches from any site but the source (ie EA), we have the direct download links in our Patching wiki (link in "Preparing..." sticky).

Before you resort to an uninstall, do the Loading Crash wiki to rule out incompatible CC with the 1.8 patch, if it solves the lag issue - you found the culprit. Next step is to find the problem content (that methodology still applies for Sims 3, just adapt the file paths).

If you decide to uninstall, make sure to remove all the leftover stuff as instructed in that Wiki.

A lot of people have issues with this patch, read the "Launcher..." and "Preparing..." stickies to minimize any possible problem before your next install of the game.

On occasion you might be asked to do a long FAQ - please make sure you do all the steps and don't just skip over them. You'll often find that these long FAQs have all the details you need. If nothing in the above FAQs fixes your problem you may post again detailing exactly which you have done and which steps failed.
