View Full Version : Faylen's Clothing Recolor Tutorial Part 2: Selective Recoloring

I must be nuts. Here's another tutorial in Microsoft Word format, showing you a couple of ways to recolor selected sections of a garment in Body Shop. Hope you like it. Adding new textures comes next. . .

HTML version insterted by RGiles for anyone who doesn't have Word
Click on the images for a full-sized version

1) Here’s your opening Bodyshop screen. This step-by-step tutorial will introduce selecting sections of clothing to recolor. It’s easier than it seems. Let’s select “Create Parts.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective01-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective01.jpg)

2) Screen number 2, click on “Start New Project.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective02-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective02.jpg)

3) And now we’ll click on “Create Clothing.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective03-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective03.jpg)

4) Let’s select an outfit that has some distinct, easy to select parts.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective04-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective04.jpg)

5) When you click on the outfit, it appears on the mannequin. Click “Export Selected Textures.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective05-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective05.jpg)

6) Select a name that will describe your project well enough to you’ll be able to find it easily later on. No spaces or punctuation!

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective06-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective06.jpg)

7) After you select “Accept Project Name,” you’ll see this. Leave this open and switch over to Photoshop.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective07-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective07.jpg)

8) Now we’re in Photoshop. Click on “Open.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective08-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective08.jpg)

9) You’ll find your outfit in “My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Projects.”

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective09-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective09.jpg)

10) Here’s our project. Click on it to open. (Double click, or click and then click “Open”.)

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective10-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective10.jpg)

11) You see all the files we have to pick from? We want the TextureName.bmp.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective11-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective11.jpg)

12) When you select body~stdMatBaseTextureName.bmp, you’ll see a picture below of the outfit. Open it.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective12-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective12.jpg)

13) Here’s our project. We’re going to do two things to it, so you learn 2 tools.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective13-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective13.jpg)

14) I’ve done a couple things here. The navigator window allows me to enlarge and move to a section of the image. Right clicking on the Lasso Tool lets me select the type of lasso I want. We’ll use magnetic lasso.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective14-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective14.jpg)

15) Magnetic Lasso sticks to a color. Most of the time it’ll go right where you want it. Go slowly until you get used to it. Click when you come back to the starting point.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective15-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective15.jpg)

16) With our magnetic lasso complete, we can now go to the Image > Adustments > Hue/Saturation menu selection, and change only the color of the selected area.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective16-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective16.jpg)

17) Let’s give our guy here an orange shirt. Make sure you’ve clicked on “Colorize” and move the sliders until you have something you like.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective17-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective17.jpg)

18) Now we’ll switch to the polygonal lasso tool by right clicking on the Lasso Tool icon again.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective18-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective18.jpg)

19) By dragging and clicking, we select the points of the polygonal shape we want to recolor. If your outfit has a plain rectangular area, you can use Rectangular Marquee instead, but you see how our jeans here don’t have that shape.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective19-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective19.jpg)

20) Whaddaya think, purple?

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective20-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective20.jpg)

21) Select File > Save As… and then click on the original file to make sure your new one will have the same name. Click OK when asked if you want to replace it. Then return to Bodyshop.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective21-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective21.jpg)

22) We Refresh our Preview Sim, and there he is in all his tacky glory. Name the outfit in “Enter Tool Tip Here.” Then Import it into the game, and you’re all done.

http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective22-thumb.png (http://thought-crimes.com/tutorials/recolor2/selective22.jpg)

23) After you’re done, you can delete the file from the Projects Folder, and from the Saved Projects in Bodyshop, and it will still be in the game.

Thank yoy for that
BTW: for anyone who doesn't own / doesn't want M$-Word: go to www.openoffice.org
There you'll get a free Office Suite which is almost identical in look and feel (it's based on Star Office)and which can handle M$-Word formats (and could even convert .doc into severak other formats like i.e. .RTF or .HTML ;)
or..in case you don't need the office packet and just want to be able to read and write in Word format, google for Abiword (which is free also)

Hello, I found this thread very useful. I am wondering if you can help... I downloaded a package of default skins for my Sim 2 adults and I like the way the female looks, but am less enthusiastic about the male skin. I cannot find a way to delete the male without deleting the female as well and am wondering if you have any ideas on how to either remove just the male default that I downloaded or to recolor it. Since it is a default, it does not appear in my Bodyshop. Any help you can give would be tremendously appreciated! :comp: Darlene

Wow! What a clear tutorial! Thanks alot for these.

I'm having trouble making things black... colors work fine, and I can get varying shades of gray but I'm having trouble finding how to make things black and am wondering what I am overlooking? I'm also using PS. I just know it's something right in front of me but I can't find it.. lol help!

Faylen
5th Jul 2005, 07:16 PM
Black is hard. What you can do is select "pick color" in PS and select as close as you can get, and you'll still need to play with the opacity, unless you want to dodge and burn your own shading and highlights. You'll want to go back and look at it in-game, too, because just as the game adds smoothing effects to items (so it looks different in-game than it does in body shop) it also adds color for lighting effects - your blacks and greys may show greens and pinks in the higlights and around the edges, so you may need to go back and forth tweaking it until it looks the way you like in the game.

Wow, great tutorial! Until now, I felt like I'd never be able to do -anything- with clothes on my own. You've really helped me out, thanks! Though I do have a question, maybe it's just because I'm new and haven't gotten the hang of it, but I seem to be having problems getting the edges colored. As in.. they'll stay the original color, it's noticeable enough for me, but I'm not sure how noticeable it really is. Even so, any hints or tips on how to get better at including the edges of clothes?

Faylen
29th Jul 2005, 05:21 PM
Well, don't worry too much about going beyond the outside edges with your texture - the alpha will block it out. Beyond that, it's mostly a matter of practicing until you get a steady hand. You may want to begin by clicking with the mouse and shift-clicking in tiny increments to get as close to where you want the edge to be, and if you hit a wrong point, you just undo >that< one.

It's probably the graphics settings in your game. When you're in the neighborhood and you see the three dots icon in the lower left, click it and set your graphics higher.

I have a question.... well I've already done some clothes etc etc, and everything seems to be ok, but when I put them on the game (this happens with make-up and clothes) it looks mmm with little squares (don't know the word in english), for exmaple if I write something on a T-shirt It can't be read on the game, but just on the game, cos on the Bodyshop everything looks ok.... what can I do? do I have to change any formar like 286 colors or something like that?

Faylen
7th Sep 2005, 03:23 AM
It's called "pixelated". You need to set the graphics on your game higher, easy (click on the ... in the lower left corner) or hard (you need a new graphics card.)

i have a question..i am one of those simmmers who is afraid to download other people's sims creations for fear i'll get a virus so i recently decided to start creating my own items..recoloring skins and objects..just the basics..in one object recolor tutorial it said requirements:simpe.microsoft.net framework version 1.1(which i'm in the process of downloading both right now)..then it said an image editor..but other tutorials they always use photoshop or paint shop pro..but those cost money or a 2 day trial download and i one don't have the time for a download and i'm also only 16 so i can not buy that expensive software..so i found and image editor serif photoplus for free i'm in the process of downloading that as well..will having an image editor other then paint shop pro or photoshop affect my ability to recolor objects or will it not make any difference at all??

thank you most sincerely,
crystal

p.s please excuse my lack of puntuation i was in a hurry and did not have time to check it..i think most of the spelling is correct..if not i do apologize.

AngelicPrincess - GIMP is a free image editor. If you don't have support for layers, some things will be very hard to accomplish.

Once you get GIMP, you'll need to learn how to use all the features, so you will spend some time just doing random graphics tutorials (not from this site) so that you know your way around it, like learning how to use layers and the tools and effects it has.

Then you can use the information presented on this site - be it using photoshop or psp and you'll need to follow along doing the same sort of thing in gimp as is being done with the other editors. You might also check the tutorials at Complete Sim (http://www.completesim.net) where they use gimp.

Sweet!!! And just as a note to people who were cheap and got the Jasc Photoshop that came with their Dell, the 'lasso' tool Faylen speaks of is the 'magic wand' tool, located between 'move' and 'eyedropper.' It took me a while to figure that one out, so hopefully this will save someone some time.

OK, first of all, don't worry about getting a virus from recolored clothes, hair, accessories, etc. (BodyShop items) or walls and floors made with HomeCrafter. Your problem with viruses comes mostly from downloading houses and lots, which often have hacked items included in them. Second, you don't need SimPE to recolor clothes, but you do need a program that will edit images - that's PhotoShop, PSP, anything that will allow you to take a .bmp file, change it, and save it as a .bmp file. However, if the program doesn't have layer capability, you're going to have to do a lot more by hand and by trial and error. PhotoShop >is< expensive, but if you look around you might be able to find an older version or a student discounted version you can afford.

I'm sorry to be a bother, and I've asked this all over the web, but if it's not too much to ask, could you help?

When trying to recolor, this keeps happening.

This (http://tinypic.com/ncms80.jpg) is what it looks like before I started coloring.
This (http://tinypic.com/ncmsgn.jpg) is what it looks like after coloring, and pressing refresh.
The problem comes here (http://tinypic.com/ncmslh.jpg) when I try make a sim wear the clothes. See how it's all pixelated and ugly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Faylen

Go back and check your image size. You should have a texture image that's 1024 x 1024 pixels. It looks like your image has saved as 512 x 512.

karaokesupasta5
7th Feb 2006, 09:45 PM
I worked with the image that it had already saved to the projects file. I saved over that, it was the exact same size as it was supposed to be (I think). And it's doing the same thing when I try to make my own eyes. It'll look excellent after hitting refresh, then when I try to use it to put on a sim, it gets all blurred and screwy.

I'm sorry to be such a bother, I just really hate not being able to do this.

Is there anywhere to get a free PS? And not just a trial version? All I have is PSP8... and it's way different than this tutorial. Any help would be great! The only this I have right now, is Adobe Photoshop CS2... but it's only a free trial...and I just downloaded it so I could do this tutorial. But I really need a more permanent solution. Thanks a bunches!!!

No such thing as free PhotoShop. You can try GIMP or Paint.NET, links to those are in the Skinning FAQs post at the top of the Skinning forum.

Manda May, I'm using CS version 7. Don't limit yourself, though. The changes from version to version should not have much of an effect as far as following the tutorials, and if things get moved around, it's usually mentioned in the help or readme files of PhotoShop. Lots of people can follow these without even using PhotoShop, just spending some time finding the similar commands and functions in the programs they use.

Love your tutorial! Just wondered if you have something that explains how to add text to the front of a shirt?

Dncr1010p, seriously, if you think about this for just a few minutes after doing a couple of Faylen's tutorials, I am SURE you will figure it out.

Thank you, I am sorry its such a problem that you have to tolerate people who ask for advice and are new to this type of thing. I am sorry if you have forgotton what its like to be new.

Dncr1010p, if you actually had continued with the tutorials, and you know how to use your image editing program (which we do NOT in any means pretend to offer tutorials on all of how to use say, photoshop, or any of the others - there are tutorials all over the web for that) - there is not much to explain. Faylen has two more tutorials on site that will take you to further editing steps, I am sure if you'd done them also you wouldn't have even asked the question.

1) Find a sim outfit with a t-shirt

2) If you can't find a plain t-shirt, pick one and then make a new layer and carefully paint (or cut and paste some of the back of the t-shirt to the front - again carefully, using some blending or hand painting to touch it up) until it's plain.
When you're totally satisfied, you could flatten the image if you want, then it will be just like if you'd taken it that way from bodyshop.

3) Do whatever you want to it regarding coloring as per tutorials on site.

4) Use your graphics editor with whatever font you like and put text on the front section of the t-shirt.

Total beginners edit t-shirts all the time, w/o any specific tutorial. And I still believe that you were quite capable of doing it without my little instructions above. I made a lot of effort to explain step 2, but it's really 'paint over any design that's on the shirt'.

Go to the Body Shop - Skinning Forum. Read the Skinning FAQs thread at the top. You can't download Photoshop. But you can get information in the thread about how to get it and other suitable programs.

zembrzuski, Photoshop is something you BUY. You must be able to read English fairly well to use the tutorials and information on this site.

There are some tutorials for paint.net, so you might want to try downloading paint.net

Thanks so much for the tutorials. I haven't played the sims 2 for the PC yet sadly, b/c I mean I have it, but this computer is too slow, so I have to wait a few weeks or months for a new computer, then I'll be doig this stuff all the time, lol. But for right now, I also purchased the Xbox Sims 2 to tide me over.

Great Tutorial Faylen. I'd be able to use it if I didn't have the Hand-Eye coordination of a donkey. I can't keep a straight line with the Magic Wand/Lasso thing.

I still am a little confused but you helped clear some up.
Now are you able to help me with designing video game character clothes?

tiggerypum
6th Feb 2007, 08:24 AM
ProtossJudicator - basically, no. You can do all the tutorials here (there are 4) then you can look at the tutorials for other editors to see if you get some more ideas for techniques that might be slightly different. Then you need to apply your skills to your particular project, and maybe go do some photoshop tutorials on the web that teach general photoshop techniques. The more you know, and practice, and then ask for advice if you hit a particular thing you're having problems with, the better you'll do.

Tutorials teach a particular technique. We've got a lot covered on site to help get you going, but in the end, you need to take the ball and run with it.
