View Full Version : Hairs I can't seem to finish

Nouk

A couple of hairs I can't seem to finish because they don't look right to me. They sit in my project folders after alot of work so it's a shame to just leave them to rot.

Can you help me finish them with some tips, or maybe some people are willing to take the meshes, make some edits, maybe even finish and release them together?

Messy Afro Hair

All ages.
I don't like the textures very much, anyone want to give me a tip on good afro textures for this one? Or maybe retexture them so we can release them together?

I can't get the textures right. The head part is shiney and greasy and the tail is brittle and looks like dead hair. Also need to remap the little loose strands in the front. There is a hairband but it's not yet alpha'd in.
Do you have tips? Feel like retexturing this before release? Should I just grab some Pooklet textures and try those?
(The error near the ear/hairline is from the skintone and not a mesh error btw)

Thick Braids Tail

The tail looks massive compared to the amount of braids that realistically should be there. Would this stop you from using this? Should I completely redo the tail?
The back also has alot of repeated texturing that can be fixed more easily once I draw some new textures for it.

Thanks for your help! I've learned that letting people look at stuf and give feedback really improves the stuff I make, and it's more fun to finish things I would normally abandon...

Third hair: Would this stop you from using this?

God, no. I want to download this yesterday and use it in game right now. The bit over the shoulder is brilliant and the back is really quite lovely. (True, I'm a fashion dunderhead who is continually surprised by the existence of extensions, so my understanding of what constitutes a natural full head of hair is compromised. But who says Sims can't wear extensions, too?)

And thus we have reached the end of my ability to contribute feedback.

I have no feedback on the 1st and 3rd ones, they look fine to me. Beside the things you already said for the 2nd one the thinning parts on the tail look weird. The length of a real ponytail would stay constant not thin out as you go down. Also maybe you could make it slightly shorter so that that weird angle isn't at the tips? They look good :)

First Hair: No help for you there.

Second Hair: Try darkening the tail and softening the ends of it?

Third Hair: Who WOULDN'T want it?!

That's my lame feedback! :D

I've been wondering what happened to the first hair after you showed it on facebook.

First hair: I quite like it already. I don't know much about hair texturing, so I'm afraid I won't be any help. I've always loved the textures on your afro hairband and afro knots hairs, if that helps at all.

Second hair: I disagree with Robodl95 on the shape. I think it's good, as a ponytail does thin out towards the bottom like that when you have your hair cut in layers. Again, I know nothing about texturing, but I think Pooklet's V2 might look quite delicious on that hair.

Third hair: Are you kidding? Nothing could stop me from using this. It's gorgeous.

First hair: I'm also not sure about the texture on this one, it looks more matted than afro-like to me but I'm not sure how you/someone could change it!

Second hair: I like it. I think that having it "thinner" towards the end makes sense - mine does that a bit because I had it cut in layers ages and ages ago and they still show!

Third hair: If you uploaded it now, I would download it. No constructive critisism there! :-) I love it. I don't think that it looks weird at all, it looks realistic enough to me!

Like Weeaboo said though try softening the ends :)

The messy afro hair look like it has too much noise, like the image was overally sharpened, why not try to soften it a bit. I also think the splotched in hightlights are throwing me off. They look very random. Not sure why that stand out to me, but it does.

Honestly, I like the shine in the head portion, so maybe carry that into the ponytail?

Other than the repeated texture on this one, I love it.

Nouk

Ok let's see:

first: soften the textures, get rid of random dots/highlighting
second: Yeah it's supposed to look layered, but I could make it less dramatic :)
try pooklet vs2, soften ponytail ends, add some shine to the ponytail to get some consistance (ponytail probably also needs some remapping)
third: remove repeat and see what happens

Thank you all for the detailed feedback! I'm going to update on this one by one, as soon as a hair is edited! :)

I don't know anything about making hair or anything else. (I can't seem to even get patterns to line up) The first one, I agree with lauratje86, the hair looks kind of matted instead of curly.

The second one, I think the pony tail seems just a little bit too thick and the lines of color (the texture?) are too straight. With or without layers, people's hair just don't hang that straight. (at least not without a ton of hair gel or hair spray). The little whispies of hair in the pony tail is definitely good, but it looks like it's only on the outside and underside of the pony tail, nothing are on the sides. (or maybe it's blending and very subtle and I'm not really seeing them).

My hair looks to be about the same length as this hair. I have to wear my hair pulled back and/or up at work. I've noticed that with or without a layered hair cut, when pulled up into a pony tail, I'll have a length of hair that is ... for lack of a better description solid/smooth, then toward the end (probably about 1/2 - 2/3) that is when the hair starts tapering into a a tip and it almost looks sort of 'feathered', there's no real demarcation between the lengths of hair (except for the bits that do their own thing). As the night wears on, I'll also get fly aways (whispies) about ear/temple area that dangle down my neck.

I don't know if any of that will help or not, if it doesn't just pretend you never saw it.

The third one, I don't think you need to change a thing. It's perfect as it is.

Me? I'm UBER picky with braids; there's only one type of braid hairstyle I like. :bunny:
Anyways, first one is a little bumpy. Might be your point, but.. isn't it curly hairs sticking out, not bumps? Err... I'm not good when it comes to afros.
Second hair: The bump seems too sharp.
Third: Looks fine to me.

3rd Jan 2011, 07:20 PM
I have little useful to add except to say I love the mesh of the first one though I agree that the texture isn't right for it. It's a great shape though. Maybe use a texture similar - but looser - to the knots one from Maxis, giving each bump a sort of coherent curly form maybe?

I see also what you mean about the third one and would agree that the tail is a bit thick for the hair on top of the head - it looks a leetle like a curtain swag at the moment (sorry). I really do like it otherwise and will certainly have that one off the site when you upload it.

I have no comment on the second one. I like that too. I have far too many of your hairs in my game as it is.

Mashed up some Pooklet textures, added a different alpha, remapped some parts, and redid the entire tail...

I absolutely love all of them, which is not surprising because it always happens to me with your creations.
I really like the changes you made in the ponytail, it looks incredibly good now and has a very realistic shape.
I like the braided ponytail, even when (because of my personal tastes) I would prefer it to be shorter. Why? Because braids make your hair look waaay shorter, so the length of that hair is a bit "excessive" to me. Anyway, that is a matter of tastes. Making the ponytail a little bit thinner would work better maybe, but I'm not really sure of it so... yeah, I don't know, maybe editing it know is a total mess.I like the detail of the braids over the shoulder, it adds realism.
I know you said the first one was for all ages, but what about the other two?
About the first one, I agree with people who said that it has too strong highlights in some places, so maybe reducing the contrast between highlights an darker zones would be a good solution. Asides from that, I find it a lovely hairstyle that fill my afro-hair needs.

All your hairs are great and I download 90% of them to use regularly.

The first one is fab, but i agree with everyone about the highlights, they seem a bit random.

There are too many braids at the back of the third, not enough to make it so I don't use it but is there a way to make them seem more individual like the ones over the shoulder? Braids do not really stay together in a clump like that.

The ponytail is really cute but too 'real' now for my game.

PS is your site down or is it just me?

Nouk
13th Jan 2011, 02:46 PM
I already made some changes to the braids ponytail, made it have less braids and more individual, but haven't put the changes in the game yet.
The first one, I'll have plans to draw a new texture for it with tiny coils.
I have the eight binned recolors and teen and up for the ponytail and have been testing ingame. The skull is rounder from the side view :P

And the website is back online now :) Thanks for advice, all :)

*edit* submitted the ponytail to mts, so on to the next hair. I'll start with the braids...

:bunny: Nouk, the updated ponytail hair looks lovely! I can't way to download it.

I love the shape and idea for the long braids mesh, but do agree with you about the repeating pattern. I think you are right to decrease the amount of braids at the back. Unfortunately I do not have anything really constructive to say other then it looks awesome and I'd love to retexture (I'm thinking of a dreaded version with beads perhaps) when you release it.

The first mesh is very cute - and I hope you make it for males too!- and needs a bit of tweaking to the texture and shading. Perhaps you could soften the current texture, add on some small curls/coils, make the roots lighter, darken the tips and soften the hair line. That probably makes little sense so here is a picture to show what I mean! (http://i55.tinypic.com/6e0m7d.jpg) :heyhey: (Feel welcome to message me if you want to work together!)

OMG! I want this one so much, I think the only one I want as much is the afro one. These 2 styles are so muck like my sister's hair. I don't really have any advice except maybe the front should be more like the afro one, or less styled in the middle. I'd honestly take either one right now. You make the best hairs and I really appreciate the ethnic styles, there aren't too many out there. Not every one has miles of big Texas hair, ;) ya know. I don't know much about hair but if you need testers or something along that line I'm willing to do it.

Personally, I'm the opposite.. I like the idea of all the braids being in front of the shoulder :)

Though I agree with what you said in the Original Post, It still does look a little bit too long.. Maybe just a braid or two more off the Back? Then again, I could be just being picky - Nouk, whatever you make I'd probably shove it in my game some way or another ^__^

Oooh, looks good! I'd definitely have it in my game, and I'm sure I'd use it a lot, but I agree with the people who think it's a bit too long. Doesn't hair get/look shorter when it's braided? I am so not an expert on hair styles! :-P To me though, this hair looks like if it was loose it'd be down past her bum. Is possible, I guess, but maybe not so likely?

I do like it very much though. My sims wouldn't mind it being long! :-D

I know it's been a copuple of weeks since the last response but I HAD to comment!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the braided ponytail! Where's the download button?!!! GIMMEE!!! :)

The messy fro... I think if you added an alpha overlayer that had individual curly hair then it would be more realistic. Are you going for the 'fresh out of bed look' or the 'uncombed for day's look? Or are you going for the 'messy on purpose' look?

For old-school, tight fros, (back to the 70's) uncombed for days hair would be uneven and flat in some areas and poofed out in others, with straggly strands sticking out in random directions. 'Messy on purpose' for a tight fro, didn't exist. It was bed-head mess or nice and picked out. Nowadays, tight fros are not seen very often and when they are, they are well shaped.

The looser curl style is what you see a lot of - like the picture that jacciinatl posted. That hair style is picked out - kinda straightening the hair strands and managed but it is not a tight curl so it is 'organized' messy lol

I like the hairstyle in post 26 however, the ends on your hair tend to bend down due to gravity whereas real curly hair would not drop to vertical on the ends so much.

I'll take them all. I Love your hairstyles!

Regarding the first pictured hair on this page, you have at last created a hair style that has potential to resemble my own! If it were shoulder length or a little longer, you would create what I envisioned Hermione Granger's hair to resemble (and it would look more like my own hair as well). I'm currently hand painting locks of hair to create a frizzy, wavy texture that is lacking in the Sims community, although I probably won't have much time to work on this endeavor until late April, when I get out of school. By the way, I managed to create a wavy texture using your advice and a few modifications in photoshop, although I don't think it sufficiently resembles my own hair texture and hence I'm trying hand painting. I still intend to use my finished hair texture on various other sims projects, however.

I am concerned that the mounds of piled hair might protrude too much into space and look rather angular instead of rounded, if that makes any sense. Your pictured view of your hair seems not to have this problem, although I need more pictures of varied angles to be sure. I can make you an MsPaint drawing to clarify my concern.

The afro looks fine to me although the hair line seems too defined and too dark. I also agree with porkypine's comments and am particularly partial to the uncombed for days tight afro idea. The braided ponytail looks excellent and I can't spot any problems.

Only two suggestion, maybe have the tips of her hair taper a bit more? Also maybe have it sag just a bit on the shoulder? It sorta looks like its floating. I just noticed those, but its perfect the way it is!

Was planning to do this (braids and tiny curl texture combo) for a while, but couldn't figure it out. This comes close to what I want. But, I need to edit the planes to be less flat and add more loose curls. Plus the braids part looks really uniform... hmmm.

Love this one as well, I do agree about the braid though. I'm thinking the Happy Braids for the size would be a great fit. Are you still planning to do the afro style and the full head similar to above? I'm asking because I'd love them so much.

Yes still planning for those :)
Should I replace the happy braids bit for this 3-d-ish one? Or should I just make this one more natural?

I like the 3D look of these braids and I admit that I like that they would look different to the happy braids, because 95% of my sims wear your hairs so variety is good  .

Hmm, now that you mention making it natural sort of like your headband afro, would be awesome because we can do braids, curly texture etc. It leaves more room for versatility.

Keep those braids 3D 'cause I want them for TS3! 2D braids look so blurry! And this hairstyle is way too good to miss it :D

I like what you did there and can't see any problems. However I'm hoping you didn't scrap the version of the poofy hair without corn rows since that would really resemble Hermione Granger hair if it were shoulder instead of neck length. Plus if I did a wavy instead of curly texture, I would at last have a sim hairstyle that looks like my own, minus the random tentacle-like locks protruding from my head, the uneven flip at the bottom, and the split ends. In short, a straighter, shoulder length version of the poofy hair without corn rows would resemble my hair on a good day.

I could make the aforementioned hairstyle shoulder length myself, but I'm afraid of hair edits. If I just scaled to make the various hair groups longer, would I need to adjust the UV map very much?

No you can have the uv map remain the same :)
Or I could make you this hair... do you have some pics I can use?

I have some ideas about that afro texture, but I need some sleep and a good image manip program to spell it out. Be back in nine or ten hours with some thoughts. :3

the hair looks beautiful ... will there be a version with a little headband??? IMO but where the braids in this one end and the curls begin it kinda looks like it needs something there ... but of course ... it would be dependent on Poly count ... would hate for stuff to be really high

The hair in post 26 is absolutely marvellous (as are all your hairs), and even with my low-end system I would make my Sims wear it. XD

Yay! :lovestruc I do like the idea of a pack, as it provides so much variety.

The 3D braids look a little odd to me. I'm not entirely sure why though (which is very unhelpful, sorry!). I agree with the suggestions for 2D braids and bandana/headband options. If you did want another, I would suggest removing the braids and making a full loose curls look. There are few decent curly meshes out there and yours is so beautiful so far. It would be lovely to have it as a full hairdo. A full head of curls like Noemie Lenoir's hair would be amazing :duck:

Also your ringlet textures are gorgeous and I would love to use them =D

Ohh yes,

Since you asked Nouk, I'd like the longer region toward the back made shoulder-length. As for constructive (I hope) criticism, the hair peaks in these sort of triangular crests before transitioning further from the part of the hair toward the main body. This triangular effect bothered me slightly with your Bill Kraulitz hair, so I denoted it with green arrows. I don't know whether the triangular shape of the "bumps" results from stacks of alpha layers and thus is unavoidable with thicker hair styles. Feel free to ask for clarification if I haven't described myself clearly. Although I imagine making the bumps less angular would simply involve a few adjustments with the move tool, this problem isn't major enough to warrant rebuilding the entire mesh and most simmers probably won't notice or care. I'm so glad someone in the free community has the skills and the patience to deviate from the perfect, smooth, generic "Hollywood" hair styles that Peggy and the like obsess about.

It's riddled with transparency problems and crap, and a loooong way from finished, has stretching, etc etc., but just to let you know I haven't quit.

It does not look that bad as far as transparency goes (i have seen that when I place glasses on a sim with bangs) .The left side (might be the angle of the sim ) looks really blockish compared to the right which is smooth and flowing. I dont know much on hairs (sim or real ) so I may not be anything helpful to you , but good luck and great job .

I don't know if you're still checking here, but that hair is amazing. All of these styles can be found on my friends and families. I can't wait for the release of these.

Still working on it, right now I'm working on the afro which has some texturing problems. Right now only the Maxis-like texture looks good on it, and I don't want to upload a hair with such limitations.

Thanks! Sadly it's not an afro texture, but more like a very curly texture.
What I need to do now is tweak the texture near the ears, close to the scalp. And I want to try and make that straight edge that you see on the hair that hangs over the chest less prominent.

I'm salivating at the thought of all these hairs. Especially the longer afro-type ones. I play a medieval game and I've been combing the net for a longer natural african hair for my sims of nubian descent and the last three displayed in particular will be perfect to fill that gap. I actually like the thought of those hairs in both a afro texture and the curly texture you have them in now. I hope I don't offend but the afro texture will be awesome for the more pure-blooded nubian sims in my game whereas the curly texture will be perfect for the mixed-race children whose hair has progressed from kinky to merely very curly.

Anyways I had simply wanted to say I think the hairs look awesome and wish you the best in the project.

I LOVE this hair, but the way it falls in front of the shoulders doesn't seem natural. The combination of the texture (really curly), the length (just below the shoulders) and the headband (which pushes the hair back) makes it seem like all the hair would stay strictly behind the shoulders. If this sim were to turn her head at all, her hair would naturally move behind the shoulder, so to have her hair fall over both shoulders like it does now makes it seem she looks straight ahead all the time. (My real hair is about the same texture and length when I don't flat iron it and whenever I wear a headband, my hair never falls over my shoulders.)

EDIT: I just read through this whole thread. See the picture in post 74? That is exactly what I'm talking about. Her hair will never fall in front of her shoulders.
