My sims don't perform on stage. Do you have to put props on the stage for them to perform? Or do the props need to be in there inventory?

Shortly before your gig starts you should be able to click on the stage and then a menu pops up, called something like "Set Up Stage..." with three options called something like "Use Venue's Stage Settings" "Create Custom Stage Setting" and "Use Previously Saved Settings". The last two options will start BuyMode and you can create your own stage, the first option will let your Sim perform right away. And this means that if there are no props on the stage to begin with your Sim should actually perform on a propless stage nevertheless. This has just happened to me after a borked Simfest deleted all the venue's props, but my Sim performed just fine.
So, if you're not given the option to set up your stage or your Sim doesn't perform after setting up the stage, I fear that this is rather a sign of a broken gig.
