I've wanted to do a themed 40s/50s-style hood for a long time now, but I can't find any good places for clothing and furniture that fits the theme. I've tried Googling around, but most of what I've found has been either dead links or things for the Sims 3, which are obviously not helpful.

Anyone willing to point me in the right direction?

Check out the sims default database. Several defaults are more retro inspired. I currently have a 40's hood going and mostly just defaulted a few things with 40's style clothes and hair.
As far as buy mode stuff, a good recolor especially if you have the pets atomic furniture will do wonders.
