Default If you had the power to kill anyone at all, what would you do with it?
And by that, I mean more than one person. As many as you wanted, only knowing their name and face. Yes, I know it's a Death Note ripoff, but the idea does present some interesting opportunities for debate.

Any ideas? Can there ever be a 'justified' reason to kill someone? Or would you forget reason, and go for the people who really, really piss you off?

Wasn't there a study on how sadistic people get when they have unlimited power granted to them?

Anyway, no, I wouldn't kill anyone - at all - because it goes against my morals, it's irreversible and frankly, this leads back to the Death Row arguement. However, doesn't mean I won't threaten it :P

Do you have a spare hour or two for me to go through my mental list?

I would like to clear up the little matter of my sanity as it has come into question. I am not in any way, shape, or form, sane. Insane? Hell yes!

People keep calling me 'evil.' I must be doing something right.

Haha, can I kill absolutely every human being on the face of the planet?

We're not healthy to this planet.

Paris Hilton. That's just one person. Surely it isn't so wrong if it's just one?

There are a couple of people I'd like to just vanish, but I wouldn't kill them - it'd hurt the ones I love. Maybe just the power to completely remove them from my life.

How about Bush?
Nah, just kidding. I probably wouldn't kill anyone.
But on the other hand, there's something in my mind that tells me to tell kill every human being on this planet. Yes, including myself.
Like Sta_r_obin said, we did enough damage already.

But, technically, I could kill everyone I would like to.

Hmmm... guess I see you guys in 10 to life.

Well can I kill cats as well? Or only persons?
Because there is one specific cat I would like to kill. No I'm not an evil animal hater, but this cat practically chewed my cat up (ok maybe not exactly, but it did bite him in his backside and his head, which isn't cheap in vet bills...).

Technically, you do have the power to kill anyone at all.. or any number of people.. You don't even need anything more than your bare hands (which is why people wanting to outlaw citizen's owning guns is stupid, but that's another debate..)

True, there are some people I dislike, and that I don't want in my life, but I just couldn't bring myself to kill anybody.

Welcome back to the fold, Doofus.

*still laughing at 'Cheese Grater'*

Anyway, the ol' Death Note dilemma. Been there, done that, on other forums, but it's always fun to consider it.

Oh, and settle down, Amish Nick, I thought half the fun of debating was...well, having fun? :P

I'd say 'no', or at least, I'd hope so. And that doesn't just go for the usual serial rapists, murderers, or members of the Ku Klux Klan. Even including power-mad dictators who spend foreign aid on ballistic missiles, scumbag CEOs who rip off elderly investors so they can add gold toilets to their 60-foot yachts, or whatever Lobbyist at the Pentagon is pitching the billion-dollar amphibious "attachment" to the B-2 Bomber, easily payable from the nation's entire yearly budget on cancer research for one unit, no.

First, I'm a little unsure in my ability to pass judgment. Second, I know I don't have the authority for this--wouldn't make me much of a proponent of rule by law, now would it? Third, I'm pretty sure I'd get addicted to it, and end up killing a couple million people, at least. Oh, sure, the first thousand or so would be "justifiable"--corrupt dictators, douchebag CEOs, mass murderers, criminals wanted by Interpol and the United Nations (that's right, I'm counting international criminals too), torture specialists in the employment of this country and all the others, etc. The types most people would agree with the world would be better off without.

But then, I'd start to get delusions of grandeur. I'd probably expand to list to include multiple murderers, repeated insider-traders, people who committed millions of dollars in tax evasion. Perhaps justifiable, but still a sign of criminal insanity, on my part. People like Pat Robertson who helped prop up those dictators I'd earlier killed off with my "power" (guilt by association--not something I advocate, by any means).

And then, it'd become epidemic. People suspected of harming a child. Pretty much every member of any organization with a name like 'The Heritage Foundation' or 'Focus on the Family' or 'Foreign Policy Research Center', 'Project for a New American Century', or anyone in a position of power who'd seriously used the term 'Pax Americana' or furthered McCarthyism in the earlier decades (if they were still alive). Now, here's the problem: do I think these are "bad" people? Well, yes, I do. I think they're corrupt and harmful. But that's just my opinion. And they certainly don't deserve to die by any means--they have families, loved ones, children, wives, mistresses, etc. The problem is, I'm convinced that such a power would become addictive.

Then, someone from one of those groups would kill me, though by then some serious damage would have been done. My own death would be a sweet release--living in a constant state of secrecy and paranoia about someone finding out what I was capable of.

And it'd all start with me telling myself that I'd write no more than five names (probably the usual suspects: Kim Jong-Il, maybe Charles Mugabe, definitely Efrain Rios Montt, and if he was still alive, Augusto Pinochet--I'd definitely 'write him off', so to speak) whose deaths I was convinced would better humanity. But then, I'd get another idea, and it'd be a list of twenty. Then a hundred. Then ten thousand. Then a million, assuming I wasn't already dead. Hell, if I had any sense of morality, I'd "write" my own name in it at a certain point.

That's what would happen if it were me. So, no, I wouldn't accept the power.

Interesting topic though, aimsme, good show. Very 'What if'.

Actually, no, you don't. You don't have the power to kill anyone at all. Maybe a certain number of people. I'll give you an example: if I give you a gun, you don't have the power to kill the President/Prime Minister/First Secretary of a certain country. Do you know why? Because it doesn't matter if you have a gun or not, you can't, and won't, get pass said leader's legions of security forces, police, tanks, soldiers, honor guards, barb wire, high walls, etc. In reality, any of us have only the power to kill a very slim number of people (out of the billions alive). Now, if said person was locked in a room with you, unarmed, that's different, but as it stands, technically, you DON'T have the power to kill any person of your choosing--or even most of the people you could possibly choose (unless every single person you want to kill lives in your apartment--in which case, you have other problems).

I think... I'd probably turn into a hermit and completely ignore the outside world.

I'd be too worried about choosing to kill the wrong person, or that maybe that much as someone seemed to deserve death, their thread was still needed in the web of fate to make something very good occur in the future. And even for 'bad people', how could I be certain they actually are bad people? I don't really trust others to get me the truth and the full story of why a person is declared bad... especially with the number of wrongful convictions I've seen brought up over the past year or so. So I'd shut myself away from knowing all about what anybody else was doing so there was no temptation to make use of the power.

I think the only thing that might spur me to a first use of the power would be someone coming at me with intent to kill... and even then I would probably hesitate enough to get myself killed, or simple defend through conventional methods.

"Segregate the sinful sexes..." "Wait, how many sexes are there?" "Two." "It's not enough I say, go out and order some more."

*twitch*
I keep a mental list of various people that would die should that happen.
...
Although my old secondary school's counciller would be first, whenever I got into a fight which was never ever my fault (I don't believe in resolving things through violence most of the time) she'd take the side of the bully and tell me that, and I quote, "OCD can make you do some bad things and I understand that you get upset when your routines are interrupted but I think you should consider taking some meds"

I think you do! In the meantime I'm gonna exercise my typing.

Well, the interesting thing is that the power to kill is within reach at all time. So who would grant such a power? Its not a "power" in itself, just a choice. All humans can kill, were made that way. So what people would I kill if I had the choice?
But I choose not to kill. I'm to lazy, or I don't care to hate anyone enough.
To me the question is much more about "why". Lets say I needed to protect whats near and dear to me. Would I kill if necessary? Probably. Instinctive. But not as a first choice. I have that little thing in my brain that stops me from killing people. I try other options. I like most civilized people intellectualize my hate and anger and try to come up with constructive resentment toward injustice. Killing is not constructive. It comes with weird consequences. If I would kill somebody, it would be the last thing I ever did. It would be a goodbye to freedom as I know it. I would never be the same again. It would mean the end of me.

Even presidents can be killed. Its not about power, but about skill. Who is skilled enough to kill a prime-minister or president? A hit-man. Is it in his own interest to kill the president/prime-minister? No, its just another job. Hiring a hit man is expensive, and not all people can afford to kill someone like that. Most people who kills politicians are not interested in the killing itself, the murder or the blood or the hate, they hire someone to do it for them in the interest of a political game. They kill for power, because they want more power, and because they think they have the power to kill, cause its part of the game. It has to be justified in order to work. It never justified for the average man/woman to play a game like that. Some paranoid-schizophrenics think its up to them, but it really isn't. Were just sent to jail, and executed if we exercise our power to kill. But we still have that power of course. Is it fun to kill? I don't know, I don't think so. I'm not gonna try.

Whenever I feel like killing someone, I realize I'm a victim of serious oppression. I prefer being peacefully on top of things, and if thats not possible, I flee. But in the heat of the moment I can feel very strongly that I have the power to kill, cause I'm human. I just don't do it.
