This user has the following games installed:

Sims 2, University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, Free Time, Apartment Life
Default Direct3D error: D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY!
Hi, I'm experiencing an issue that's made my game pretty much unplayable. It's started in the past day or so, after I updated Windows 10 (which actually fixed another issue I'd been having). I have Ultimate Collection. I have an AMD RADEON R9 M395 video card. I have attached the rest of my specs in an image (I hope that's okay). If this is relevant, I have used CFF explorer on my game.

After anywhere from 5 - 20 mins of playing, my game will crash with a message saying: 'Direct3D returned an error: D3DERRR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY! The application will now terminate.' (see attached) I've noticed it happens more frequently on community lots (sometimes as soon as I load it up), but not exclusively.

The first thing I did was remove my downloads folder, but it still happened. I've tested it on 3 three households within my hood, each with 2 sims, and it happened in every one. I ran it in compatibility mode for both Windows 7 & 8, still happened. I have recently repaired my game. I'm at a loss for what to do really. I've never seen this error before, and I never really experience crashing apart from in these last few days. I just want to play my game :(

If there's anything else you need to know let me know.

Did Windows Update change any of your drivers? Specifically video drivers.

It doesn't look like it, unless I'm missing something

Doesn't look like it either. I googled the error and came up with this:
http://modthesims.info/t/569648

Which suggests using Graphics Rule Maker. It provides better support for newer video cards.

Okay, thank you so much. I didn't come across that thread when I was googling, but it sounds like they had exactly the same problem as me. I have downloaded the program - is there any particular setting I need to change? I've just kept it at it's default settings and will try and run the game now.

Yeah, default settings should do for now. Hope it works.

I opened my game and messed around with it on fast forward for about 15 mins - and no signs of crashing!! Then I played properly for about 30 mins and I was able to play a whole 7 hours on a community lot. I'm so pleased. :lovestruc
However, I'm still being cautious as I was able to play for reasonably long stretches before the crash + error, so I will keep you updated. The Sims 2 has given me trust issues...
Thank you so much for all your help!!

Oh no - it's happened again On about the third (sim)day playing a household, I sent one of my sims to a comm. lot and sure enough, as soon as it loaded up I got the error and crash. I'm not sure what happened really, as I'd happily visited the same lot multiple times before that.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry for bumping this old threat but I've been having this problem too. I bought a whole new PC with a high graphics and memory card to support by building habits but it keeps coming up with this error
