I accidentally started reading Harry Potter again a while ago, even though I have a million new books I've never read, and now I'm on book four. But Harry Potter is just such a comfort zone for me. It's hard for me to find the energy to read, but Harry Potter is just so easy to get into again.

Never read HP, but I know books like that. They just feel like home.

The Hidden Life of Trees. It's written by a man in Central Germany who had 20 years of forest ranger experience. It's got rather in-depth knowledge of the tree anatomy and functions.

I finished 'Turtles all the way down' by John Green while I was at uni so I picked up 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio at ASDA to read on the train ride home. So far it's pretty good.

Just finished Norse Mythology, as retold by Neil Gaiman. Before that a couple of books by Matt Haig (The Radleys and Humans), both of which were a quick, light read. Currently reading my "comfort zone" - a PG Wodehouse collection.

Fiction: The Switch, about a guy who accidentally picks up the wrong Macbook at the airport, and because the owner's assistant is really bad at his job and botches an attempt at recovery, the guy twigs on to the fact that there's something wicked in the laptop and he could do a public service by sharing it with the media.

Nonfiction: A Crack in Creation, which is about the discovery of the CRISPR gene editing tool which may be able to cure a lot of diseases and eventually create superhumans. Well, cure diseases, anyway. People get distressed when you mention creating superhumans, but I want Khan Noonien Singh!

Japanese Soul Cooking by Tadashi Ono and Harris Salat.

I bought it on a whim for my Kindle app and I've been planning to try Tanuki Soba and Kitsune Udon. Now that I know the secret to get shrimp to lay flat when deep fried for Tempura, I can stop pondering that question along with how toothpaste is put in the tube. (Sesame Street reference we Millennials had)

I actually may buy more ebooks from Kindle. I had a lot of samples of cookbooks, language phrasebooks, manga, the Garfield compilations dating back to Garfield at Large on June 19, 1978, when Garfield walked on 4 legs and the design was heavy on the lineart details for characters and the remaining Captain Underpants books.

Shadowed Souls. It's a collection of short stories from various authors, including a standalone story about Molly in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series.

I like that most of the stories I've read so far are explained just enough to make sense, even if I haven't read a single story by any of the other authors. The stories are engaging enough to be a good read, even with no previous relationship to the characters.

No reply for seven months? I guess no one reads anymore, or like me, they forget this thread is here.

I'm reading The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack. Scratching my head about it. I thought it was a history book, but it's a steam-punked version in an alternate dimension, or something. It took me awhile to get interested in it. But, I'm enjoying it now.

Currently trying to get into cookbooks that involve unicorn cuisine (foods dyed with natural plant-based colorants rather than artificial petroleum-based ones)

One such book, pasta, pretty please has a slightly snarky, but heartfelt introduction from the author of book, Linda Miller Nicholson who tells of her days of living with grandparents in her childhood summers, to her Roman stay abroad, even to becoming a mother of a fussy eater son and what eventually lead to the book publication.

There's nothing I love more than a good story behind a recipe or book, so the introduction to it is key.

Maybe I need to change the genre of books I read. I don't know what I want to change to though.

A change of pace helps.

If you're a romance novel reader, try something completely random in relation to the original genre. Like me, I was reading manga (Japanese comics) and graphic novels with childish humor and switched to cookbooks with little stories about the book's main content. Besides, I want to attempt to bust a myth or revisit and conclude on my terms whether or not to win the spiritual heart, it's a matter of taking a detour to feed the stomach. It worked for my parents, how else would I be talking to you guys now?

I'm kind of a one-trick pony. I will probably buy more cookbooks to improve my skills.

I read the last of the 5th Maze Runner book today (started the first one 3 weeks ago, and probably read the two next ones in the span of 48 hours). I've seen them in the book shops occasionally without finding much interest, but then I ended up buying the first book while buying a bunch of others, read it on a long bus trip, and I enjoyed it so much I almost immediately upon arrival decided to buy the remaining 4 books. They've made me do a lot of nightly reading as well, which has been an on-and-off thing for me the past few years.

I really liked the mystery aspects, not quite knowing what was happening all the time, and with some twists and turns that made things interesting, plus some surprise twists at the end that made a lot of things fall into place. I usually don't have much interest for fallout/apocalypse/dystopian books, but these ones had me reading at every available moment. Didn't even know there were movies, but planning on buying them the next time I'm on a DVD-shopping spree.

Now I'm reading "The Legacy Chronicles: Trial by Fire". I like this series quite a lot. Can't quite remember how I got into it - maybe I saw the "I am number 4" movie or bought the book because it perked my interest - but it's a fun series to read.

So... with a twist of fate, I guess you could say, one of our TV channels decided to send the Maze Runner movies just days after I'd ordered the movies on BR. I've watched most of the first (happened upon it in the middle) and the second. And all I can say is that they aren't too bad, but the books are (of course) better. They've changed some important details from the books, and possibly slammed a few things from the 5th book into the mix, and overall lost a few things I was looking forward to seeing. And they've gone and done the usual mindless zombie route, which bugged me a little. The affected people are supposed to look and behave scary, but those were a bit over the top, and not in a good way. I've seen much worse remakes, though. It's pretty much like the two first HP books/movies - they kept the overall story, but a few things were changed, sometimes without a good reason.

Anyway, I'm currently reading the Siege of Stone book by Terry Goodkind. I loved his first series in the same universe, but after the last book (Confessor) and when he started the R&K series, something weird happened to his writing, and he kept repeating himself multiple times. I noticed it the most when I heard the audio book from his first Nicci book. How many times do you have to repeat the same sentence in the same book? I'm sure the book could be 1/3 the size by filtering out most of the repeats, and you wouldn't even notice. Single repeats of what happened in previous books is fine, and I can andle the occasional repeat if it's important, but I remember from the audio book that I thought "if I have to hear "Sweet sea mother" one more time, I'm going to punch something" (it's gotta be one of the most anoying character catchphrases I've ever read, and the character it belongs to is so obviously one-dimensional and boring in a "you saved me, so I'm just going to tag along even if I'm mostly useless" kind of way). A lot of his characters have taken on a more one-dimensional personality lately, some to the point where you almost hope something is gonna happen to them to wipe them off the pages just to be done with their annoying personality... I do like Nicci, though. Nathan is not as interesting as he used to be. Makes me miss R&K... I need to dig those books up (but they're still at the bottom of a very big pile of moving boxes). I've also noticed the same repetitive tendency in his other book series (basically everything after Confessor), and there's a very annoying tendency to over-explain things too (one explanation went on for something like 30+ pages of talking, I think - and at least half was repeating the same info in several different ways). There was a tendency of this in the pre-Confessor books as well, but far from as annoying.

A day or so ago, I finished a book called MELT. It's a story about a chemical compound that is supposed to dissolve plastic, but instead it's acting kind of like grey goo, and is eating the world. But, it's because EVERYTHING has plastic in it.

there's a lot of prepper stuff in there, too. I'm kind of meh on that, not because I don't believe in being prepared, but because prepper stories are kind of preachy.

But, it was a good book. The next title in the sequence is supposed to be auto delivered to my (plastic) kindle any time now.

I'm now reading The Long Night. It has a good premise but has sort of devolved into a search for survivors scenerio kind of thing. I've been there too many times before.

Sorry for the double post.
I don't read about authors or any celebrity or person I like because of that very thing. I end up hating them. I've never read the Gunslinger series, though there was a time I read everything King wrote.

It was fortunate for me that his writing began to decline even as his ego and despicable public opinions became more frequent. I find it very easy to skip anything he writes now.

The Talisman is one of my favorites, too. I used to be most fond of The Stand, and I still think it stands as a great story. But, for pure chills, I'd have to go with The Shining and Salem's Lot.

As for movies, the 2017 version of It stank on toast. It showed you can take great material and ruin it, as Kubrick also showed us with his version of The Shining. However, in the 80's or 90's, there was a really good limited series on television that stuck close to the book and was very good and super scary. If interested, you can find it on Itunes.

As for King, he's become a bitter old alcoholic. He hates Christians and political conservatives. And the fact that he is such a big name means no one wants to edit his work, which desperately need better editing. He's also become repetitive.

His best work does seem to be be in the past.

I finished The Long Night. Why did I then buy the next installment and start reading it? It wasn't that good. But, I'm back at it. Sad to say, there's a third installment in the series. I hope I don't buy it if this one isn't more entertaining.

AHA! The Long Night book 2. I caught on to you. You ended on a cliff hanger. However, for a cliff hanger to work, one has to (follow me here) CARE what happens next.

The premise was interesting, but two books of survivors wandering around trying to find safety or family....don't you think it's been done before, like a million, trillion times? Sure, Book three probably answers all the questions, but, at this point, I don't care what the answers are.

On to the second book in the MELT series.

I recently read "Five feet apart" (a love story involving cystic fibrois - medically themed books and movies are one of my guilty pleasures), after stumbling over the movie trailer on Youtube. Quite liked that one, fairly realistic (I think?), and not overly romanticized.

I found in it a 3 for 2 offer, so I also ordered another I've been curious about, the "Ready Player One" book (which happens to be another book-to-movie project). I'm about 1/3 into it, and so far so good, though it does seem to like the "tell, don't show" technique a bit too much, but I guess conveying the amount of background story needed would've been a bit difficult to tell in some other way in a 300 page book.

Currently reading The World's Scariest Places Volume II. The weird thing about having a kindle and belonging to a kindle book club, is you get a LOT of books for free. By the time I get to them, I don't always remember why I wanted to read them. Nevertheless, it's pretty good so far. I think it's real horror stories.

I just finished Out of the Cauldron by a guy whose name I don't remember. It was GREAT. He was raised in NYC and brought into Santeria by one of his aunts. He finished as an outright devil worshipper. And then, he met Jesus. Wonderful story.

I love both of those tales. If interested in a twist, you might try the Malice in Wonderland series. I read book 1. It was good, but I wasn't interested enough to read the rest of the series, as they followed a character in which I wasn't as invested.
