Default The Fix-it Thread
This is for people to post links to fixes for common sims 2 problems, like the graphics-rule fix. Right now, this initial post is a bit of a mess, but I'm going to try to have all the suggestions themselves posted here, eventually with numbers beside each one to send you to the post that explains them better. Also as the numbers grow, I will think of some way to categorize them, so people won't have to read them all, but can readily find the one they need. Thanks to Charity for her suggestion and help as well as to everyone who contributes. You guys rock. :lovestruc

For some weird reason, the Graphics Rules Maker did not work on my pc (even though it put the files in the correct place - it just did not) - so a manual fix may be needed on some systems; and the info is here: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=5446 (with a link to Windows 10).

If you're running into an issue where random textures are flashing pink, just save and restart the game - it means the game ran out of video memory and barfed a bit. However, if it happens several times, this video demonstrates how to increase the video memory available.

If you are on a 64-bit system (here is how to check), I highly recommend applying the 4GB Patch to your game. It allows the game to access more than 2GB of memory available, so it takes longer before the game runs out. This does the exact same thing as the CFF Explorer method mentioned in several other places elsewhere, but is a little more foolproof.

Thanks Rosebine! I may finally get some smooth edges in my game. (And if the computer blows up... We'll it's nearly 9 years old anyway...)

I just tried that, but there's no tutorial on what to do.

I already did the CFF Explorer, so for me, applying that patch made my game un-launchable...so my advice would be, CFF Explorer OR the 4GB patch. Not both!

To use the 4GB patch with The Ultimate Collection: just click on it to start. It will ask you which file (or perhaps executable, I am not sure, but it will ask) you want to patch.

C-Program files (X86) - Origin games - The Sims Ultimate Collection - Fun with Pets - SP9 - TSBin - and here is the icon that says SP9. Select the icon. (Edit - it is the Mansion&Garden stuff icon).

The patch will inform you in a second or so that it was patched and it is done.

Ah thanks. I was trying to make it work with my desktop shortcut. XD I vaguely remember the CFF Explorer and something else being mentioned together as ways to speed up the game. Anyone remember what the something else was?

Data Execution Prevention. I didn't do this for other reasons, and this is for Sims 3, but others have recommended doing this for Sims 2:

That was it, thanks.

Edit: As of 1.21 and newer, The Sims 3, all expansions, and all stuff packs use the same executable: TS3W.exe in The Sims 3 directory. This is the only executable that must be added to the DEP list to take care of DEP crashes.

Does anyone know what the right one is for Sims 2 and UC?

Sims2EP9: Mansion and Garden Stuff. In UC it's under Fun with Pets.
Sometimes it's referred to as EP9, and sometimes it's SP9, but they are the same.

Everything I've read says the 4GB patch does not work with Windows 7 64-bit.
I tried changing things via the CFF explorer and borked my launcher. Went back in and gave it another try. I don't remember if it worked or if I just gave up. Is there a way to check to see how much memory the game is able to use?

Edited to add my contribution to the thread, fix for the weird crib coloring. With this patch, the side of the crib no longer takes on the color of the bedding: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=400696

I have Windows 7 64-bit, and the 4GB Patch works just fine with it. You're not supposed to edit the launcher, but the game executable.

It should say so under the properties of the processor - I just right click on ThisPC in documents on the left to see that.

Don't use the launcher - it's crap and has lots of bugs.
