Default Installing sims 1 on windows 8 help please (with tons of info)
I picked up the base game, hot date and superstar at the thrift store about three months ago (I had asked for info on the game then) and managed to install the game within a week of my purchase. Then life got in the way and I never managed to actually run the game. I have done so now, and have found it doesn't work. I have rummaged through the forums here, dozens of other sites/forums and google. I have come up with patches like this one that don't work for me. I can get up to choosing my game size (by just hitting run, running as administrator, in compatibility mode and adding it to origin along side 3 & 4). 800x600, 1024x768, doesn't matter which one I hit. It opens, the disk spins and makes noise, the pointer gets the little sand timer and the laptop slows down like it's opening the program. But nothing happens. No blank screen, no sound, no nothing. Task manager doesn't even seem to think the game was opened, there's no sign of it anywhere.

The cd is clean, but I have not tried a no cd mod as nothing looked safe. But could this just be my cd drive? I can watch movies, but sims 3 disk wouldn't install (ended up spending half hour chatting with EA support to get it added to origin to play it without the cd) and I've had no trouble playing old games on my laptop with cds (i.e wheel of fortune from '98 and Barbie team gymnastics from '01, but I can't get Madeline games from '95 to run) and my laptop has no trouble running sims 3, 4, or other games like minecraft. So I'm wondering if anyone has another trick I could try, some form of mod to help me run it (I have no problem downloading something as long as it doesn't look sketchy) or a suggestion of a laptop that will run it (so when I get a new one, I at least have a chance of running older games).

Thank you for reading the long post and commenting with any suggestions of help!

This seems to have worked for many. I doubt it's your disc drive as you were able to install the game, if it were defective you wouldn't be able to install/run anything.

Thank you, but that was actually one of the first things I tried but it didn't work.

I figured it wasn't my disk drive, but I thought it was worth mentioning at the very least.

Thank you both! After uninstalling the windows update, I managed to get it to run and pop up the superstar screen but sadly my graphics card doesn't support thousands of colors.

*slaps self* Stupid me, it's running just fine in compatibility mode for windows xp!

Try these solutions:

Also, I run my copy of Sims Complete through this program, which gives me more control over resolution.
