This user has the following games installed:

Sims 3, World Adventures, Ambitions, Generations, Pets, Supernatural, Seasons, University Life, Island Paradise, Into the Future
Default "Unknown error occurred" when I attempt to launch the game
I just reinstalled The Sims 3 and the ambitions expansion pack using Origin. As soon as I click the Sims 3 icon to launch it, a window pops up saying "Unknown error occurred" and a button that says Okay. Does anyone have any idea of why it's doing this? I kind of suspect it's Origin.

If you reinstalled through Origin, then I take it you are on Patch 1.69 and are attempting to launch the game through Origin. Correct? Was the TS3 game folder in place in Documents during the re-install and patching? If so, it may have become damaged. Try pulling it out to your Desktop for safekeeping and see if you can get a new game started up on the clean folder that should spawn in its place.

If that's not it, there may have been remnants of a prior TS3 left behind in the Registry (I am assuming Windows here, not Mac) that never got cleaned up. It's a best practice to use a tool such as CCleaner to clean the Registry before attempting a re-install.

Edit:
Whoops sorry, forget all that. Just noticed that the subject line says OS X. Okay, so did you do a complete removal of a prior installed version including any hidden files that TS3 likes to leave behind? Same question as above on the game folder in Documents, though. And have you run the OS X version of the 1.67 SuperPatcher on your new install?

Seems like the problem was just Origin. I installed Sims 3 using my disc and it works fine now.

Glad it's working for you that way. Just an FYI, should you ever upgrade OS X to El Capitan, Sierra, or beyond if you haven't already, those operating systems are reportedly unable to authenticate the discs thus leaving disc install players with no way to start up the game. Most of them have to switch over to Origin for Mac installs at that point.
