So, I may have borked my game and might need a reinstall. I worry about the availability of patches now that sims 2 is largely unsupported, at least from what I've heard. Will I be able to patch my game if I uninstall/reinstall?

My game was running fine up until today. This morning I attempted to make my game large address aware but it just made everything a million times worse. The game became choppy and stuttered. It often becomes nonresponsive. Luckily, or so I thought, I had created a backup of the exe before doing any sort of changes to it, but even after restoring the original exe it continues to behave badly. I'm not sure what caused this, whether it was the attempt at LAA or what, but I know it worked perfectly last night and this morning and then it just stopped earlier today. I have not installed any CC or changed any files except for the LAA attempt. --;

Anyways, will I be able to reinstall? I'm not too worried about losing my hoods since I had, quite literally, just restarted them all with clean templates, so I won't be losing much. I just don't want to uninstall a 100% patched game for an unsupported, unpatched one.

What is Large Address Aware?

And patching from their website is fine. I had to install the game a month or two ago and I patched everything from thesims2.com. I'm not sure about alternative links to patches.

patches are available here: http://www.simprograms.com/the-sims...sims-2-patches/

I was able to fully patch me game a few months ago when I was able to play Sims 2 again.

In a nutshell, it makes the game recognize more than 2 gigs of ram on 64 bit systems. From what I read, it was supposed to help with my random crashes, which happened at least once per game play.

And thanks for the info, I'll continue to fiddle around with my game but if I can't salvage it, I guess I'll just have to do a reinstall.

You download the patches. Save them, and you won't have to worry about running off to fetch them again.

All you can do is the best you can do.
(My most recent book is Sullivan, That Summer. In case you care.)

Making my game LAA did not have that effect for me - the whole game has stabilised marvelously. So I'm pretty pleased with it. Maybe you made a mistake? Anyway, regarding the persistence of the choppiness - it might be something else but I was going to suggest you delete the cache files before you do anything else. The cache files, in part, act as a temporary memory for the game.

Polgannon Project Seriously, I'm still working on it.

I would do what Peni Griffin said and save the patches to your computer so you can use them whenever you need to repatch your game. That's what I did 'cause sometimes for the hell of it, I'll reinstall my game, and then that way I don't have to worry about websites with the patches closing down and stuff.

I followed the tutorial on GOS pretty thoroughly, but maybe. I am still trying a lot of troubleshooting, both with the game and with my system. I deleted the cache files but I haven't started it up again yet, because my computer started doing it's weekly virus scan and it'll just bog down if I try to load the game while eSet is going.

So hopefully, I'll know in an hour when the scan is done x.x

Thanks for the answers, everyone!
